I need a gun to keep myself among
The poor people are burning in the sun
But they ain't got a chance
They ain't got a chance
I need a gun
Cos all I do is dance
Cos all I do is dance

I need a gun to keep myself among
The poor people are burning in the sun
No, they ain't got a chance
They ain't got a chance
I need a gun
Cos all I do is dance
Cos all I do is dance

In my backpack
I got my act right
In case you act quite difficult
And your resolve weaken
With anger and discontent
Some are seeking and searching like Nimoy

I'm a peace-loving decoy
Ready for retaliation
I change the whole occasion to a pine box six-under
Impulsive don't ask why or wonder
Orders given to me is:
strike and I'm thunder with lightning fast reflexes on constant alert
from the constant hurt that seems limitless with no dropping pressure

Seems like everybody's out to test ya
'til they see your break
You can't conceal the hate
That consumes you
I'm the reason why you fill up your Isuzu

Chill with your old lady at the tilt
I got a 90 days visit
And I'm filled with guilt
From things that I've seen
Your water's from a bottle
mine's from a canteen

At night I hear the shots
Ring so I'm a light sleeper
The cost of life,
it seems to get cheaper
out in the desert
with my street sweeper
The war is over
So said the speaker with the flight suit on
Maybe to him I'm just a pawn
So he can advance
Remember when I used to dance
Man, all I want to do is dance

(Dance!)
(Dance!)
(Dance!)

I need a gun to keep myself among

Wikipedia Dirty Harry
"Dirty Harry" is a song from Gorillaz' second album Demon Days. It was the third single from the album, released 21 November 2005. It peaked at #6 in the UK. It was also released as a promo and onto iTunes earlier that year. An early version of "Dirty Harry" titled "I Need a Gun" was included on Damon Albarn's album Democrazy. On 8 December 2005 it was announced that "Dirty Harry" had been nominated for a Grammy under the category "Urban/Alternative Performance", but was beaten by Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley's "Welcome to Jamrock". The song's lyrics contain the line "The war is over so says the speaker with the flight suit on", a reference to George W. Bush's "Mission Accomplished" televised speech. Dirty Harry is also a 1971 film directed by Don Siegel. One of Gorillaz's earlier singles is the name of the actor who played this film's title character, Clint Eastwood. The single cover is similar to that of the film Full Metal Jacket.

Undertow

Your brown eyes are my blue skies.
They light up the river that the birds fly over.
Better not to quench your thirst.
Better not to be the first one diving in,
though you caught me and you know why
they breathe in the deepest part of the water.

What’s the matter? You hurt yourself?
Opened your eyes and there was someone else?
Now i’ve got you in the undertow.
Now i’ve got you in the undertow.
Why you wanna blame me for your troubles?
Ah ah ah you better learn your lesson yourself.
Nobody ever has to find out what’s in my mind tonight.

Let tonight pass us by.
Do you really want to be the one to fight?
And i said “You’re better not to light that fire.
It will take you to the darkest part of the weather.”

Nobody ever has to find out what’s in my mind tonight.

Nobody in my mind. Nobody in my mind.
I feel it in my heart tonight.

I laid on the floor, pressing in my eyes.
Seeing little lights.
These are the decisions that only one could make(?)
I wanted to stay home but i went running running running running from the troubles
runningrunningrunningrunningrunningrunningrunning

What’s the matter? You hurt yourself?
Opened your eyes and there was someone else?
Now i’ve got you in the undertow
Now i’ve got you so
why you wanna blame me for your troubles?
Ah ah ah you better learn your lesson yourself.
Nobody ever has to find out what’s in my mind tonight.
Nobody ever has to find out what’s in my mind tonight.

Insound Warpaint here
A Los Angeles quartet dealing in sparse, atmospheric art rock, Warpaint originally consisted of sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg and Shannyn Sossamon (on bass and drums, respectively), as well as Emily Kokal and Theresa Wayman on vocal and guitar. Sossamon left due to conflicts with her acting schedule and was replaced by Stella Mozgawa. With a dedicated lineup, the band began to experiment with murky spaciousness and stripped-down arrangements, and gained the attention of former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante. In 2009, they self-released their debut EP, Exquisite Corpse (which was mixed by Frusciante). After a successful showing at CMJ, they signed with Rough Trade and set to work recording their full-length debut for the label. The Fool arrived in October 2010, featuring more fleshed-out songcraft and stronger performances.

2-14 Roy Orbison - It's Over

Roy Kelton Wikipedia
Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988) was an American singer-songwriter and musician, well known for his distinctive, powerful voice, complex compositions, and dark emotional ballads. Orbison grew up in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly / country & western band in high school until he was signed by Sun Records in Memphis. His greatest success came with Monument Records in the early to mid 1960s when 22 of his songs placed on the US Billboard Top Forty, including "Only the Lonely", "Crying", "In Dreams", and "Oh, Pretty Woman". His career stagnated through the 1970s, but several covers of his songs and the use of one in a film by David Lynch revived his career in the 1980s. In 1988, he joined the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne and also released a new solo album. He died of a heart attack in December that year, at the zenith of his resurgence. His life was marred with tragedy, including the death of his first wife and two of his children in separate accidents.
Orbison was a natural baritone, yet could sing high tenor notes with ease; commentators have suggested that he had a three- or four-octave range.[1] The combination of Orbison's powerful, impassioned voice and complex musical arrangements led many commentators to refer to his music as operatic, giving him the sobriquet "the Caruso of Rock".[note 1] Performers as disparate as Elvis Presley and Bono stated his voice was, respectively, the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard. While most men in rock and roll in the 1950s and 1960s portrayed a defiant masculinity, many of Orbison's songs instead conveyed a quiet, desperate vulnerability. He was known for performing while standing still and solitary, wearing black clothes and dark sunglasses which lent an air of mystery to his persona.
Orbison was initiated into the second class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 by longtime admirer Bruce Springsteen. The same year he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone placed Orbison at number 37 in their list of The Greatest Artists of All Time. In 2002, Billboard magazine listed Orbison at number 74 in the Top 600 recording artists. Rolling Stone rated Orbison number 13 in their list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2008.

1-11 Justice - Stress

Justice Wikipedia
Justice is a Grammy Award winning French electronic music duo consisting of Gaspard Augé (born 21 May 1979 in Besançon) and Xavier de Rosnay (born 2 July 1982 in Rosnay). The duo is one of the most successful groups on Ed Banger Records and is managed by the label's head, Pedro Winter. Justice is known for incorporating a strong rock and indie influence into their music and image.
Their debut album † was released in June 2007 to critical acclaim. The album was later nominated for a Grammy Award for "Best Electronic/Dance Album" and came in at number 15 on Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2007 and number 18 on Blender's "25 Best Albums of 2007" list. It was nominated for the 2007 Shortlist Prize, losing out to The Reminder by Feist. Their remix of the MGMT song "Electric Feel" won the Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical in 2009.
In June 2009, it was announced that Justice would be moving to WMG/Atlantic's newly relaunched Elektra Records label. The band reportedly started work on their second album in mid-2010, with no release date yet announced.

2-08 Todd Rundgren - Zen Archer

all music Todd Rundgren Biography Page here
Todd Rundgren's best-known songs -- the Carole King pastiche "I Saw the Light," the ballads "Hello, It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends," and the goofy novelty "Bang on the Drum All Day" -- suggest that he is a talented pop craftsman, but nothing more than that. On one level, that perception is true since he is undoubtedly a gifted pop songwriter, but at his core Rundgren is a rock & roll maverick. Once he had a taste of success with his 1972 masterwork, Something/Anything?, Rundgren chose to abandon stardom and, with it, conventional pop music. He began a course through uncharted musical territory, becoming a pioneer not only in electronic music and prog rock, but in music video, computer software, and Internet music delivery as well.

As his career wound into its third decade, Rundgren concentrated on behind-the-scenes innovations, but during the '70s and '80s he maintained a relentless work schedule. He released up to two albums a year either as a solo artist or with his band Utopia, while producing acclaimed, successful records for artists as diverse as Badfinger, Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad, the New York Dolls, and XTC. Given such an extensive catalog, it's not surprising that there's a vast variety of styles within Rundgren's music -- which is either rewarding or frustrating, depending on the album. Also, more often than not, the singles from each record do not offer an accurate indication of what the remainder of the album sounds like. Such an approach severely curtailed his mass appeal, but it helped him cultivate a ferociously dedicated cult audience.

This trio released three albums, Klopfzeichen, Zwei Osterei, and Eruption. When Schnitzler left the group, Roedelius and Moebius became Cluster, and worked extensively with producer/engineer Conny Plank until his death in 1987.

2-09 Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons - The Night

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - The Night

The Four Seasons Wikipedia
The Four Seasons are an American pop and rock group, with a sound somewhat reminiscent of doo-wop, although they were not thought of as actually being a doo-wop group[according to whom?]. By the mid 1960s, they had become an internationally famous rock-and-roll act (the Vocal Group Hall of Fame has stated that it was the most popular rock band before The Beatles). Since 1967, they have been known off and on as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, though not identified as such on any of their records.
In 1960, the group known as The Four Lovers evolved into The Four Seasons, with Frankie Valli as the lead singer, Bob Gaudio (formerly of The Royal Teens) on keyboards and tenor vocals, Tommy DeVito on lead guitar and baritone vocals, and Nick Massi on bass guitar and bass vocals (Massi was replaced in 1965 by Charles Calello, who was in turn replaced later in 1965 by Joe Long on bass guitar and bass vocals).

2-13 90 Day Men - We Blame Chicago

90 Day Men - We Blame Chicago

90 Day Men Wikipedia
90 Day Men is a progressive rock band formed in 1995 in St. Louis, Missouri and later based out of Chicago, Illinois. Their name is a slang term used by corrections officers to refer to prison inmates who are slated to undergo psychiatric examination.

The group began as an early post-hardcore band, similar to that of Louisville, Kentucky groups such as Slint and June of 44. Formed as a trio in 1995 by Brian Case, Cayce Key and Chandler McWilliams, they released their first 7" single in 1996 entitled, "Taking Apart the Vessel"
Robert Lowe joined the group in 1997 on trumpet and vocals but later moved to bass when McWilliams departed. Their first recording with this lineup was the 1997 7" single "If You Can Bake a Cake, You Can Build a Bomb", followed by an EP on Temporary Residence in 1998. In late 1998 they signed with Southern Records, who released their first full-length, entitled (It (Is) It) Critical Band, in 2000; by this time keyboardist Andy Lansangan had joined the group. Two further LPs followed; 2004's Panda Park was the subject of significant critical acclaim.
Bandmember Robert Lowe now has a solo project called Lichens.
Guitarist Brian Case played in the Chicago garage rock band The Ponys and now plays in Disappears.
Drummer Cayce Key now plays in Bloodiest.

POEM
The Smile
BY WILLIAM BLAKE

There is a smile of love,
And there is a smile of deceit,
And there is a smile of smiles
In which these two smiles meet;

And there is a frown of hate,
And there is a frown of disdain,
And there is a frown of frowns
Which you strive to forget in vain,

For it sticks in the heart's deep core,
And it sticks in the deep back bone,
And no smile that ever was smil'd,
But only one smile alone

That betwixt the cradle and grave
It only once smil'd can be,
But when it once is smil'd,
There's an end to all misery.

last.fm Anna Calvi Biography
Anna Calvi’s unique blend of dark atmospheric romantic pop has already caught the attention of London’s elite; flanked by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons with whom she is recording in the studio, Mercury-Award-Nominated Dave Okumu of The Invisible with whom she recorded “No More Words”, and Lightspeed Champion who in NME has tipped Anna for success in 2010. Anna is currently writing songs for the album in a dark underground basement using her trademark Telecaster guitar, vintage harmonium, and layers of choral like vocals and violins.

Anna Calvi’s intense mesmerising live performances also showcase her fiercely provocative and mastery electric guitar work continue to win over new audiences. The show impressed John Kennedy (XFM) enough for him to write an X-Posure piece on the live show in December’s Dazed & Confused. Supremely backed by Daniel Maiden-Wood on drums and Mally Harpaz on percussion / harmonium. Anna has already supported The Golden Silvers (XL Recordings), The Invisible (Accidental Records), Laurel Collective (Domino Records), The Brute Chorus, Carina Round, Kaki King, and will be joining Johnny Flynn for a second UK tour.

“I’m half Italian, brought up in London, but spent a lot of time in Rome. All my family play music. My influences are Django Reinhardt, John McLaughlin, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Velvet Underground, Roy Orbison. Although I love pop music my guitar playing and song writing is also heavily influenced by classical music, namely Messeian, Ravel, and Debussy.

I see my songs as mini films; I want to take the listener into another world for the space of a song. I always want to create a real sense of atmosphere. It is really important to me that the music dictates the story as much as the lyrics do - much like a film score. Both musically and visually I want to evoke a sense of passion, I’m interested in portraying romance which at the same time feels mysterious and sometimes dark; the songs often summon a sense of outside danger, of forces which you can’t control, at the same time within a landscape which sounds beautiful.“

Attic Sessions 4 - Joan Of Arc

Liquida Page here
Attic Session 4 Joan Of Arc by Leonard Cohen My interpretation of this song is instrumental, as I found the lyrics to be so atmospheric I wanted to write my own piece of music which was inspired by the story that unfolds in each verse. Therefore there are four parts to the instrumental, as there are four verses. After each verse Cohen returns to the same refrain, which he sings a beautiful tune just with 'la's'. After each verse I also return to this melody. I just wanted to capture the story which is so beautifully told, with music. I hope you enjoy. Now the flames they followed Joan of Arc as she came riding through the dark; no moon to keep her armour bright, no man to get her through this very smoky night. She said, "I'm tired of the war, I want the kind of work I had before, a wedding dress or something white to wear upon my swollen appetite." la... Well, I'm glad to hear you talk this way, you know I've watched you riding every day and something in me yearns to win such a cold and lonesome heroine. "And who are you?" she sternly spoke to the one beneath the smoke. "Why, I'm fire," he replied, "And I love your solitude, I love your pride." la... "Then fire, make your body cold, I'm going to give you mine to hold," saying this she climbed inside to be his one, to be his only bride. And deep into his fiery heart he took the dust of Joan of Arc, and high above the wedding guests he hung the ashes of her wedding dress. la.. It was deep into his fiery heart he took the dust of Joan of Arc, and then she clearly understood if he was fire, oh then she must be wood. I saw her wince, I saw her cry, I saw the glory in her eye. Myself I long for love and light, but must it come so cruel, and oh so bright? la...

"Jezebel", the debut single from Domino’s new signing, Anna Calvi, will be available on limited edition 7” and via digital download on October 19th. It is backed with "Moulinette".

Originally written by Wayne Shanklin and performed by Frankie Laine in the early 50’s, "Jezebel" was famously covered in French by the chanteuse, Edith Piaf. Anna Calvi’s reworking of the classic is full of passion, emotion and startling beauty. Anna succeeds in thoroughly making "Jezebel" her own.

"Moulinette", written by Anna with her drummer, Daniel Maiden-Wood, showcases her powerful voice, her mastery of the electric guitar as well as her unique blend of dark, atmospheric and romantic pop, to full effect.

Anna Calvi is currently putting the finishing touches to her debut album, details of which will be announced soon.

Anyhoo, enough rambling, here’s their email conversation:

1) We listen to Gregory and the Hawk and it feels genuinely like your speaking your heart out. For a song, what’s the one thing that matters most: the whole creative process behind a song or the song itself, i.e., the resulting song? Why?

I think the song matters but every person has their own way to make work they like the best. And changing your process is the best way to change the creation.

2) You have put in our mouths the words we’re not brave enough to pronounce at times. Where do you capture your inspiration to write your lyrics?

I think it comes from wanting to know other peoples emotions, wonder what their real motivations are and the connections we all share.

3) Are lyrics the result of the music or is it the other way around?

Usually I have a beginning sentence or theme that inspires the music and then the rest of the words come after that.

4) There’s always a special moment of our lives marked by music, so what made you turn your attention to music? What was THE moment or thing that really got you from music?

Maybe moving away from my hometown when I was younger really pushed me to compose songs, but by then I was already into piano too. I’ve always felt like there is music and poetry everywhere, I think I may have been a dramatic kid.

5) When did you realize you wanted to devote your life to make music?

Maybe in college I thought that, now I am actually changing my mind. Its important to step back and reevaluate what you’re devoting yourself to. And to make sure your life is full of inspiration first and foremost.

6) Do you think your audience directly influences each one of your performances?

Yes, I think so.

7) Did you receive any special preparation (i.e. musical education in school, classes) for making/playing writing music and lyrics?

Yes in school with other musicians. We taught each other a lot.

8) We first heard of Gregory and the Hawk as a solo artist and now we can listen to a full-integrated band for her. How’s the band experience for you? Is it different from playing and making music as a solo artist?

Yes, very different. I prefer to play alone because it is easier for me. But I haven’t done a band very much, so maybe that answer would change in time. Often I would like a new band which write different music, but in my opinion gregory and the hawk is essentially a solo project.

9) In your new album, Leche, there are sounds that are pretty familiar for the Mexican ear. There’s a Huapango style guitar (a very popular and beloved traditional music genre in Mexico) in songs like Geyshire Nationale (my favorite) and Landscapes. How did that style made its way to Leche?

Hi, thank you. I’ve never heard of this guitar style but now I’ll definitely find out about it. What you’re hearing on these songs is a celtic harp that I’ve been using this year. Its pretty simple to answer – I found this harp and wanted to learn it so these songs were written on it. I really love the sound.

10) We believe every album tells a particular story, that’s our approach and experience. So, what’s the reason of your new album’s name, Leche?

I felt it represented a basic quality of my life changing and growing like a baby needs milk

10) A personal question here: do you think music can work as therapy, as to express what’s deep inside us? Why?

Yes of course

11) How would you feel if some girl came to you and told your music has been a positive experience in her life?

Wonderful, of course.

12) One major influence in your music and why?

Time.

Thanks!
