lastfmlogo.jpg Team Ghost Biography
Team Ghost is a collaboration between Nicolas Fromageau, multi-instrumentalist composer Christophe Guerin and producer Jean-Philippe Talaga. Fromageau was originally one half of M83 on their first two albums (M83; Red Seas, Dead Cities, Lost Ghosts). Fromageau split with M83 in 2003, and emerged from his hiatus when he performed at 2009’s Midi Festival on the French Riviera, under the new moniker “Team Ghost”. Their debut EP “You Never Did Anything Wrong to Me” was released on April 26th 2010 by Kiss Me First Records.

Pitchfork:album review here
The EP makes a strong argument for its form, offering seven essential songs (there are only six on the vinyl version) with no filler. In an iTunes era that has ushered in a renaissance for the singles format, You Never Did Anything Wrong to Me is an argument that sometimes a band should forsake the pressures of writing 10-plus great songs for a padded full-length debut and concentrate more on making a vital, necessary-sounding EP that best illustrates its capabilities. Which is exactly what Team Ghost have done here, marking a triumphant (yet wistfully subdued) return for its creator.

Wikipedia CocoRosie
CocoRosie are a musical group formed in 2003 by sisters Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady. The sisters were born and raised in the United States, but formed the band in Paris after meeting for the first time in years. Their music has been called "freak folk", and incorporates elements of pop, blues, opera, electronica, and hip hop.
CocoRosie was originally a duo, with Sierra singing, playing the guitar, piano and harp, and Bianca singing and manipulating various children's toys, electronic and percussion instruments, as well as other exotic noisemakers. They subsequently added various backing musicians at live shows, usually a bassist, synth player and beatboxer. They have been a very active touring group, playing across Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. They have released four full-length albums: La maison de mon rêve (2004), Noah's Ark (2005), The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007), and Grey Oceans (2010).

Studio albums
La maison de mon rêve (Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records, 2004)
Noah's Ark (Touch and Go/Quarterstick Records, 2005)
The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (Touch and Go Records, 2007)
Grey Oceans (Sub Pop Records, 2010)

CocoRosie - Grey Oceans album review here
MP3s are rubbish, aren't they? No physical product, no artwork, no lyrics and then there's the compression issue too. However, CocoRosie may just have provided a singular positive.

Take a look at that album cover. What on earth is going on there? They look like they're preparing for some kind of medieval fuzzy-felt banquet. It is quite possibly the worst artwork to grace a record since Black Sabbath's Born Again, or Rod Stewart's An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down. But it also serves as a forewarning of the weird world of CocoRosie, a world that has divided opinion since the inception of the band. Yet with Grey Oceans, cover aside, there's a good chance that more people are likely to find themselves enjoying a cruise on the waves with the Casady sisters.

A brief look at the sisters' past reveals further just how peculiar their world is. Born in the States, they spent their formative years moving across America with their mother in an almost nomadic existence. Their father, obsessed with Native American culture, would take them on vision quests on Indian Reservations. The sisters parted company at an early age only to be reconciled in Paris several years later, whereupon they created a band.

Grey Oceans finds CocoRosie just as weird but slightly less indulgent than they were on The Adventures Of Ghosthorse And Stillborn; just. The strange hissing of what sounds like steam under pressure introduces the album, and instantly the industrial feel of Eraserhead is called to mind. However, such harsh imagery is soon balanced out with the introduction of a soft piano and a lightly plucked harp. The sisters themselves float about in the mix with an almost ghostly presence, never quite pushing themselves to the forefront. Vocally, they've been constantly compared to the likes of Björk and Joanna Newsom over the years, but Grey Oceans establishes them as important voices in their own right. The sheer dexterity and variety of the performances across the album is simply astonishing.

Smokey's Taboo continues in the same vein, wistful coos and tablas providing a dusty, desolate soundscape. It's here that the sisters really let their vocals shine, switching between a Björkian schoolgirl croak and a soaring operatic vocal. It's all very serious for a group that started out making tunes on kids' instruments.

Hopscotch returns to those playful roots however, as a piano lick that would have rung a bell with Shirley Temple collides with skittering electro beats, a melody grabbed from Pink Floyd's Another Brick in The Wall and a seriously heavy set of bass pulses. RIP Bumface retains their sense of play in its title but is an assured grab bag of sounds, mixing xylophone, electronic glitches, tinkered with drums and those dainty voices. The result is like spinning the dial every 30 seconds on an old fashioned radio and magically creating a reasonable tune.

The whole album is an eclectic mix of folk, electronica, musical hall, eastern spirituals and stream of consciousness songwriting. Weird it may be, but when CocoRosie get it right, as with the cutesy pop and dark piano melancholy mix of Lemonade, or the beautiful ethereal balladry of the title track for example, they are unstoppable.

Pitchfork:The Knife, Grizzly Bear, TV on the Radio Create Charity Steel Drum Art here
The nonprofit organization SFOTE is teaming up with a group of artists and musicians to auction off art made out of steel drums. The fundraising event, called "7 Drums / 7 Artists", is designed to honor the Laventille area of Trinidad and Tobago, where steel drums were invented. Trinidad drum maker Elliott Mannette has donated seven steel drums, which will be transformed by an all-star cast of characters.

The Knife's Olof Dreijer will team up with Mt. Sims on one drum, and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone will take on another. Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor and Gang Gang Dance's Lizzi Bougatsos will also contribute, as will artists Rita Ackermann, Olaf Breuning, Peter Doig, and Chris Ofili.
According to the Knife's website, Dreijer and Mt. Sims will perform their steel drum piece at Santos Party House in New York in September. Check the SFOTE website for details.

7 internationally acclaimed artists create works of art utilizing the Steel Pan for SFOTE fundraising auction.
A tribute to the spirit of inventiveness that gave rise to the only instrument created and banned in the 20th century.

With this fundraising event, SFOTE wishes to honor the incredible innovation that has sprung from the Laventille area. Though faced with huge challenges, Laventille has been a source of creative prosperity. Laventille is home to Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, one of the world’s oldest steel bands existing today. It is also the place where Steel Pan originated, and it is the birthplace of innovators and world-renowned tuners such as the late Rudolph Charles, Bertie Marshall and Roland Harrigin. It is the heart-place of the Steel Pan world, where sound pioneers Winston "Spree" Simon and Elliott Mannette created one of the century’s only new acoustical musical instruments. It also houses several other bands such as the Laventille Hilanders, Courts Laventille Sound Specialists, etc.

For 7 drums / 7 artists, artists will utilize steel drums donated by Elliot Mannette, to create works which will be auctioned to raise revenue for current and future SFOTE initiatives. Artists include Rita Ackermann, Olaf Breuning, Peter Doig, and Chris Ofili as well as Olof Dreijer of The Knife together with Matthew Sims aka Mt. Sims, Tunde Adibempe and Kyp Malone of Tv on the Radio, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Lizzi Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance.

7 drums/ 7artists is currently taking shape through the incredible support of the art community and Elliot Mannette.

Major Organ and the Adding Machine was originally thought to be a side-project of Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster (both of Neutral Milk Hotel).
But the project has grown to include the Elephant Six Orchestra and many others. In March 2001, a CD entitled Major Organ and the Adding Machine was released on Orange Twin Records.
While the mysterious Major Organ is the apparent leader of this project, some of the contributors were Kevin Barnes (of Montreal), Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel), Julian Koster (Music Tapes , Neutral Milk Hotel), Eric Harris (Olivia Tremor Control), Will Cullen Hart (Circulatory System, The Olivia Tremor Control), Andrew Rieger (Elf Power, Farty Jones).

Wikipedia Major Organ and the Adding Machine
Major Organ and the Adding Machine is an Elephant 6 supergroup led by the elusive and possibly fictional Major Organ. The liner notes of Major Organ and the Adding Machine, the band's debut album, leave it a mystery as to who is officially featured, and when performing live on the Holiday Surprise Tour, the members of the band wore paper masks to maintain anonymity. It is believed that the main contributors are Jeff Mangum, Julian Koster, Robert Schneider, and Kevin Barnes, whose vocals are most obviously present on the album, but a number of other Elephant 6 musicians are believed to have contributed too, including members of The Olivia Tremor Control, Elf Power, and Of Montreal.
In 1997, when thought to be a side-project of Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster, Major Organ and the Adding Machine contributed a cover of Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World to a Kindercore Records Christmas compilation. Over the next few years, they recorded a self-titled album and released it on Orange Twin Records in 2001.
A trailer for a Major Organ and the Adding Machine film was shown at the 40 Watt Club on May 5, 2007 and August 11, 2007. The film was premiered on October 7, 2008 and shown at every show on the Holiday Surprise Tour in the following weeks. The film contains no dialogue and is accompanied by alternate arrangements of songs from the Major Organ and the Adding Machine album. And expanded version of the album, including a DVD of the film, is set to be released in 2009.

Elephant 6 Movie With Jeff Mangum, Kevin Barnes Gets CD/DVD Release
Pitchfork:News here
Last year, we reported that Major Organ and the Adding Machine, a mysterious low-budget movie starring the Elephant 6 collective, would finally get a long-awaited DVD release in fall 2009. We were only off by a year. As it turns out, Orange Twin will release the movie as a DVD/double-CD pack on September 14.
The movie, directed by Joey Foreman and Olivia Tremor Control/Elf Power member Eric Harris, comes packaged with an expanded double CD containing a remastered version of the 2001 album from the shadowy group that shares the movie's name, with seven bonus tracks. The DVD also comes with bonus footage, including music videos, live footage, and other film projects.
Elephant 6 mainstays like Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum, of Montreal's Kevin Barnes, and the Music Tapes' Julian Koster contributed to both the movie and the album. Above, you can download the album track "Life Forms (Transmission Received)", which features Harris, Koster, and Olivia Tremor Control's Will Cullen Hart. Wikipedia Johnny Flynn
Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit are an English folk rock band signed to Transgressive Records. They are fronted by Johnny Flynn (also known as Joe Flynn), an actor, poet and songwriter who cites W.B. Yeats and Shakespeare among his influences. He is a member of the 'Propeller' theatre troupe, acting in several plays including Twelfth Night. The second album "Been Listening" was released through Transgressive Records on June 7th 2010, and was accompanied with worldwide touring. The record follows debut LP ‘A Larum’ - released in the summer of 2008 - and the ‘Sweet William’ EP, which was released in the winter of 2009.

Johnny Flynn: “Been Listening”
It’s been a tumultuous couple of years for Johnny Flynn. Since releasing his terrific debut album, A Larum, in 2008, the British folkie has dropped from Lost Highway Records, and he’s seen some personnel shake-ups in his Sussex Wit ensemble. And it’s not just in his personal sphere that things have shifted; the times are a-changin’ as well, with a resurgence of interest in traditional folk music on both sides of the pond. Just think: A couple of years ago, Flynn stood out as a totally out-of-time songwriter and performer; these days, it’s impossible to find mention of him outside the context of Laura Marling and Mumford & Sons.

But second album Been Listening brings good news: He’s still the same old Johnny Flynn. He still pens wonderful songs, with finely-honed storytelling skills that reflect his training as a Shakesperean actor. And he’s still wonderfully anachronistic– his traditional folkie guise is more lived-in than that of his peers– even as he’s dialed back the Dickensian ragamuffin act in which most of A Larum was based. He still writes in character, but here the characters are more varied, and less affected: The title track is written from the standpoint of a real-life traveling evangelist who tried to trick God with his worldly blues music, and Flynn uses the tale as a launching point for a wry observation on religion and human nature.

It’s his Sussex Wit that’s changed. Flynn explains that he wrote the record’s lead track, “Kentucky Pill,” after the addition of a new drummer, whose more groove-oriented playing style not only transformed the group’s dynamic, but inspired Flynn to write an uncharacteristically bright, sunny, African-flavored pop tune, complete with a soulful brass section. It would seem that the song proved a turning point for Flynn’s music, as it lays the tracks for an album that’s more muscular, more varied, and altogether more band-oriented than his fine debut; “Churlish May,” for instance, maintains the opening number’s shiny, brassy sound and marries it to a rocksteady beat. Elsewhere, he explores different shades of his British folk roots: “Barnacled Warship,” with its aggressive beat and sawing violins, is chamber folk with strong rockist leanings; “Been Listening” hints at the blues, while “The Water” is a delicately strummed ballad, but fuller and more complex than many of the similar tracks from A Larum. Incidentally, it’s also a splendid duet with Marling.

Her presence on this record may suggest that Flynn is inviting– or at least making peace with– his being lumped into the neo-folkie revival scene, and that’s nothing less than very gracious of him: While these contemporaries, Marling included, take great pains to recreate traditional folk tropes and trappings, Flynn keeps the old spirit wonderfully alive and vibrant by not allowing his own music to become obsessed with historical detail, instead allowing the very definition of folk music to stretch well into pop and rock, music from the Americas and Africa too. It makes Been Listening a step forward– an album that builds on the promise of his debut– and confirms Johnny Flynn, actor or not, as the real deal.

Cold Cave – Life Magazine (Delorean Remix)
For the first half of this mix Cold Cave’s slant is nearly invisible amidst the Delorean original-sounding instrumental that could easily soundtrack the Gyrosphere at Seabreeze. In addition to the original’s lack of presence for the first three minutes, it’s also nearly invisible for the final minute as well – this is all the better. The presence is felt only in the catchy vocals from Cold Cave, which are well-placed here, albeit briefly to max effect.

That this version is its own seemingly unconnected song, only hinting at one part of its basis, makes the take interesting. Cold Cave’s is a burner, and though this track hits on a completely different level, it too is a burner nonetheless. Spin it loud.

lastfmlogo.jpg !!!(Chk Chk Chk) Biography
!!! is an American dance-punk band from Sacramento, California that formed in Autumn 1996 from the former band members of The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and popesmashers.

After a tour together, members of local Sacramento, CA bands Black Liquorice and popesmashers formed !!!. The band’s name was inspired by the subtitles of the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy, in which the mouth-clicking sounds of the Bushmen were represented as “!”. Chk Chk Chk is the most common pronunciation, but they could just as easily be called Bam Bam Bam, Uh Uh Uh, Pew Pew Pew, etc. etc. etc.

Based in Sacramento, California; Portland, Oregon; and New York City, their debut full-length record came out in 2000 as a self-titled album on the Gold Standard Laboratories label. This was followed in 2003 by the single “Me and Giuliani Down By the School Yard”, a lengthy track combining house beats with sinewy basslines, psychedelic guitars, and simple lyrics which quote the title song of the musical Footloose.

They are commonly associated with the dance-punk movement. A second full-length, Louden Up Now, was released on Touch And Go in America and on Warp in Europe in June 2004. In June 2005, !!! released a new EP covering “Take Ecstasy With Me” by The Magnetic Fields, and “Get Up” by Nate Dogg. The following December, the original drummer for the band, Mikel Gius, was struck and killed by a car while riding his bike. !!! released their third album, Myth Takes in 2007.

!!! is composed of Mario Andreoni (guitar), Dan Gorman (horns/percussion/keys), Nic Offer (vocals), Tyler Pope (bass/various electronic devices), and Allan Wilson (horns/percussion/keys). Touring members include Shannon Funchess (vocals) and Paul Quattrone (drums). The band also shared membership with the similar, defunct group Out Hud (including Tyler Pope, who has played with LCD Soundsystem).

Vocalist and drummer John Pugh officially left the band in July 2007 to concentrate on his new band Free Blood. Shannon Funchess stood in for Pugh during much of their 2007 tour.

John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers saw the band in a gig in Los Angeles and invited them to support the Red Hot Chili Peppers during their 2006 tour of the UK.

Their drummer, Jerry Fuchs, passed away after falling from an elevator shaft on 8th November 2009. He was pronounced dead upon reaching the hospital.

lastfmlogo.jpg Crystal Castles Biography
Crystal Castles consists of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. They are named after the lyrics “The fate of the world is safe in Crystal Castles” and “Crystal Castles, the source of all power” both from the theme song for She-Ra’s fortress. Ethan Kath formed the band alone in December 2003, in Toronto, Canada. In April 2005, Glass recorded vocals over five original instrumentals by Kath. The band’s first single Alice Practice was actually a microphone test by Glass. She was not aware that the recording existed until London UK’s Merok Records asked to release the track on vinyl. The release sold out instantly. NME Magazine has included their debut album in their “Top 50 Albums of the Decade” list at #39

Crystal Castles are known not only for their own efforts as a band, but also for commissioned remixes for number of groups, including Hunting For Witches by Bloc Party, and Atlantis To Interzone” by friends and label mates, Klaxons.

In mid-2008, Crystal Castles were involved in two controversies related to artwork permissions and samples in their earliest unreleased songs. Crystal Castles used Trevor Brown’s artwork (depicting a black-eyed Madonna) without permission.

In one of Kath’s earliest, unreleased demos, he incorporated a sample without permission. The track, “Insectica (CC vs Lo-Bat Version)”, uses clips chopped out of a song by Lo-bat called “My Little Droid Needs a Hand”, released under a Creative Commons license. Another track called “Love And Caring”, samples the kick and snare from Covox’s “Sunday”

Josefina Sanner is one of Sweden’s most prolific female singer/songwriters with over 700 written songs. The result is a collection of glittering pop songs that, while being readily available also holding willfulness and exciting secrets and really touch in depth. She and producer Andreas Dahlbäck (who previously collaborated with Anna Ternheim, Thomas Andersson Wiij and Eskobar among others) together have created a minimalistic and enigmatic sound, where Josefina’s unique voice emerges more beautiful and headstrong than ever. - “Love Case Scenario” is the result of a very painful breakup - a worst-case scenario, says Josefina. I have retold the stories in detail, they are like little short films. By doing so - to transform my experiences into songs - I’ve even turned my worst-case scenario to a love case scenario. In recent years, the guitar was Josefina’s companion on tours and in songwriting. But on the way to her love case scenario, Josefina also found the home of a partially new musical expression. She went back to where she once began her creation - at the piano and the easel. - In the void created after the breakup, I put away the guitar, says Josefina. Instead I started to paint intensive and eventually I began to compose at the piano again. And then I rediscovered the expression that I had when I started writing songs many years ago. Some of the songs on the album are directly rooted in my images and I also have one of the paintings on the album cover. RA News:The Books The Way Out here
The sound collage duo will release their next full-length this summer.
Sample-twisting virtuosos The Books are set to release their next full-length, The Way Out, this summer on Temporary Residence Limited.
Much like their 2005 effort Lost and Safe, the new record consists of bright collages, some of which have pop or folk-style vocals. "The working concept for the sound of The Way Out was pretty simple: Every track needs to sound like it comes from its own universe," says the band. It will be their first album in almost five years, a stretch of time that can be partly attributed to the incredible amount of cutting and splicing that went into each song.
"We started collecting audio tapes and video tapes on our last tour and we came home with a mountain of stuff, around 4000 tapes," Zammuto told Pitchfork last summer. "There's an unbelievable amount of treasure to go through, and that's what we've been up to over the past few years."
The Way Out will be The Books' first release on Temporary Residence Limited, a Brooklyn-based label that houses artists like Mono, Low and Eluvium. If you're looking for a sneak peek of the record, check out this stream of the first single, "Beautiful People."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, 'It's Blitz!' (Interscope)
SPIN_logo_186_large.gif SPIN album review here
You're a zero-ohh….No matter how breathily Karen O exhales, or how temptingly the synths drone and swell around her, it's a curious rallying cry. And as the opening track on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' third album unfolds, it's unclear whom she's addressing, where she's going, or what's gonna happen when she, or we, arrive. "Get your leather on" is the only real directive. Is this a party, an initiation rite, or a club-kid rendition? But as the band surges to an electro-rock whoop, there's a profound catch in Karen's voice: "Get to know whether you're cryin', cryin', cryin' alone / Can you climb, climb, climb? Oh-ohh," she entreats. Time to stop pretending, kids.
In many ways, Karen O is the spiritual den mother of the late-aughts Facebook strays who embraced MGMT's "Time to Pretend" and "Kids" as winkingly misty, Linus-blanket hymns. But like so many implicated in New York City's emergence as a stylishly scruffy rock mecca, and then as a post–Ground Zero sandbox of retro-kitsch and nü-rave denial, she bailed (to Los Angeles, coincidentally, where an even more starfucked version of the same scene was oozing around culture-hustler Steve Aoki). Now, responding to the laptop new-wave and neo-disco detritus that washed up in her wake, Karen's back, offering a couch to crash on, but also issuing challenges: The fog-machine stormer "Heads Will Roll" all but wields a riding crop. With the Yeahs' sound adjusted accordingly (less guitar grit, more synth sparkle), she's plainly invigorated and ready to reclaim the streets she made (too) safe for ironic headbands and glitter.
It's been a long-delayed transformation. As far back as 2004, Karen was working on a solo album with Squeak E. Clean (a.k.a. Sam Spiegel, of N.A.S.A.) and told fellow YYY Nick Zinner that she didn't want him contributing guitar. That project stalled, but for 2006's poignantly sketchy Show Your Bones (coproduced by Spiegel), the follow-up to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Grammy-nominated Fever to Tell, Zinner diligently churned through an array of guitar moods―from goth-surf eerie to garage-punk edgy to acoustic-folk weary―and by most accounts, rarely clicked with Karen. But on It's Blitz! (coproduced by Nick Launay and TV on the Radio's David Sitek), those creative rifts seem fully mended.
The result is the alternative pop album of the decade―one that imbues the Killers' Hot Fuss and MGMT's Oracular Spectacular with a remarkable emotional depth and finesse. In the shimmery melodic throb of "Soft Shock" and the contemplative twinkle of "Hysteric" (on which Karen coos, "You suddenly complete me"), you hear New Order's timeless swoon, but freed of pathos. "Dragon Queen" (featuring TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone) effortlessly strolls past that stoop in the Stones' "Waiting on a Friend" video, giving Jagger/Richards a funky tutorial.
Whatever the intent, It's Blitz! feels like a requiem for our exhausted, commodified- cool epoch and a giddy vision of a far-less-lame future. "Dull Life," with Zinner allowed room to riff, stomps gleefully all over the "Village scene." And on the ballads "Runaway" and "Little Shadow," it's as if Karen O is leading us on a dreamy, funereal but hopeful march to the river, with the coffin of the oft-invoked "hipster" held aloft. Pour out some Stella for the poor sap, but not too much.

It's Blitz! Wikipedia Critical reaction
The album has been very well received by critics, having a weighted average rating of 82/100 (Universal acclaim), according to Metacritic, based on 36 reviews. NME wrote that "It's Blitz!'s heartfelt love letter to the transcendent possibilities of the dancefloor is an unexpectedly emphatic reassertion of why Yeah Yeah Yeahs are one of the most exciting bands of this decade", while Spin said that it is "the alternative pop album of the decade―one that imbues The Killers' Hot Fuss and MGMT's Oracular Spectacular with a remarkable emotional depth and finesse". Later that year, Spin would place the album second on their best albums of 2009 list. Meanwhile, in a track-by-track preview of the album, The Fly said that It's Blitz! is "an amazing return for Yeah Yeah Yeahs... an instant classic", later giving the album a rating of 4.5 out of 5.The BBC called the album "a triumphant return for New York's finest".Clash commented that the trio had achieved growth without distancing themselves from what made their name: "The album proves that they can provide epic music with personal themes, that YYYs can expand without losing what made us fall for them in the first place". Despite the general overwhelming positive reaction to the album, some reviews were mixed. Tiny Mix Tapes commented, "From most bands, half of a great record would be an incredible accomplishment, but we’ve heard so much better from them" and awarded the album 2.5/5. Nick Butler of Sputnikmusic, while praising the album with an overall score of 3.5/5, summarized the album will "probably date badly and, despite clearly being better than Fever to Tell, it probably won't be remembered by as many people, or as fondly by those people".

lastfmlogo.jpg Mary Gauthier Biography
Mary Gauthier (born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1962) is an American folk singer/songwriter. Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Mary was adopted. At age 15, she ran away from home and stole her parents’ car, and spent the next several years in detox, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in jail. These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on (particularly her song “Drag Queens in Limousines”). Later on, she enrolled at Louisiana State University as a philosophy major, but after five years there, dropped out due to drug problems and moved to Boston. After working waitress jobs and eventually being promoted to manager of the restaurant where she worked, financial backers paid her way to attend the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts and she opened a Cajun restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, “Dixie Kitchen” (also the title of her first album). She wrote her first song at age 35. After the release of her first album, she sold her share in the restaurant to finance her second album, Drag Queens in Limousines. Gauthier is an out lesbian and two of the songs on her first album, “Goddamn HIV” and “Skeleton Town”, dealt with AIDS.

Her surname is pronounced “go-chay.”
“The Foundling”

No Depression Review of The Foundling
Mary Gauthier official website here
Gauthier’s new CD, “The Foundling” is the product of two years work, and is quite simply the best collection of songs she’s ever recorded. An intensely personal album, “The Foundling” recounts Gauthier’s struggle to find her birth mother after being abandoned by her shortly after her birth in March 1962. In the hands of a less capable artist, a concept album about the search for and ultimate rejection from one’s mother would be doomed to failure. It is an idea that could so easily go awry as to be impossible or embarrassing to listen to. There are so many complex emotions involved that it would be easy to give into the temptation to cheapen them, aim at the lowest common denominator, and go right for the listener’s heartstrings. And, while I would defy anyone to remain dry eyed by the time The Foundling’s thirteen tracks have run their course, Gauthier’s work is too mature and fully formed to settle for being nothing more than a vicarious thrill. The emotions described, explored and eviscerated throughout The Foundling’s tale have obviously ripened over the artist’s lifetime and settled in deeply enough to be explored with precision – if not with detachment.

‘The Foundling’ isn’t easy listening music. It’s often hard to approach as it’s so rare to hear songs that reach as far as these ones do. Time and time again, Mary Gauthier resists every temptation to elevate her suffering and put it into a mythical framework as younger artists so often do when trying to communicate their feelings of loss. These are songs stripped of their filters and protection, and are often so honest as to be artless. Yet, somehow Mary Gauthier’s commitment and fearlessness shine through and she gets away with expressing things that a less mature musician would stumble on. She’s aiming so far left of the top forty that she often ends up in territory that is all but uncharted.

Phil Selway Wikipedia
Philip James Selway (born 23 May 1967) is an English musician and songwriter, best known as the drummer of English alternative rock group Radiohead. He also drums and provides backing vocals, along with occasional guitar and lead vocals, for 7 Worlds Collide. Selway is known for his precision and proficiency in various styles and unusual time signatures.[1][2] He has worked with Samaritans since 1991.
In 2008, Gigwise named Selway the 26th greatest drummer of all time.

Main article: Radiohead
Before Radiohead became successful, Selway studied Literature Life and Thought (English and History) at Liverpool Polytechnic's CF Mott Campus near Prescot prior to it being renamed Liverpool John Moores University. Before that he had worked for various touring musicians and worked as an English teacher as well. In the very early '90s, Selway left Radiohead's early lineup (then called Shindig or On a Friday) to move to Ireland, and only returned to the band when a relationship fell apart.
His timing and varied drumming helps to give the band its sound. Whereas his technique on earlier albums such as Pablo Honey and The Bends corresponded to the classic rock feel of the band's original style, the more experimental and atmospheric feel of their more recent work has been complemented by Selway's transition to a more solid, repetitive technique, often featuring a motorik sound.
Apart from his regular band duties, Selway also occasionally sings backing vocals during live performances, especially notable on "There There", "2+2=5", "I Will" and "Go to Sleep". Since the album Kid A, he has also contributed drum machine programming.
Selway has studied drums in London at Drumtech under the tutelage of Francis Seriau along with fellow Radiohead member Ed O'Brien.

Work outside of Radiohead
Selway has been associated with emotional support group Samaritans as a listening volunteer since 1991. He performed with the band Dive Dive in March 2005 and appeared in the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a member of the band "The Weird Sisters" along with Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood and Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker.
Selway has also toured and recorded with Neil Finn as part of the 7 Worlds Collide project. He drummed on their eponymous 2001 live album, and provides drums, guitar and occasional lead vocals on their 2009 studio album, The Sun Came Out, where he also penned two tracks.
He appears on two tracks - "Rest on the Rock" and "Out of Light" - on the album, Before the Ruin, by Roddy Woomble, Kris Drever and John McCusker,[5] and is currently recording a solo album.
In 2009 Selway played on guitarist Martin Simpson's studio album "True Stories".
On 15 September 2009, NME reports that Selway will release a solo album. The album will feature Wilco members Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone as well as fellow 7 Worlds Collide artists Lisa Germano and Sebastian Steinberg. He announced a solo tour on February 4, 2010. here

Radiohead drummer Phil Selway has officially announced the details of his solo album. There had been reports from last year saying that there was a possibility that he would be releasing an album. Earlier this year, he fronted the charity project 7 Worlds Collide during the folk songs “The Ties That Blind Us” and “The Witching Hour.”
The delightful Radiohead drummer will be releasing his solo album on August 30th (via Bella Union) which will be entitled Familial. The album cover for Familial as of right now has been revealed to be a family photograph. Check out the artwork below.
