From Which We Were Raised
From Which We Were Raised is the first full album from Dubliner Greg O’Brien, who takes us through his memoirs equipped with guitar, drum machines, synth and organ sounds.
It’s an endearing mix of folk and electronica, O’Brien’s almost-spoken vocals are full of melancholy, spread over stark programmed beats reminiscent of the likes of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (but with added ambiance). At times the meandering narratives and loops get a bit monotonous, but highlights like Separate Rooms and New Year’s Sky help to vary the of pace, full of melody and atmosphere.

Vampire Weekend's Rostam Shares New Songs, Covers Vampire Weekend Pitchfork Page here
Late last month, we gave you the heads up on Vampire Weekend keyboardist and Discovery jam-maker Rostam Batmanglij's other other side project, the solo outing Boys Like Us. The Batman's already remixed a tune by beach bros Foreign Born, and, uh, beach bro Jack Johnson. Now he's stepping out with some songs of his own.
Fader points out that there's been two new tunes added to Boys Like Us' MySpace page: the folk ditty "The Creek Became a River", and a quieter, more string-laden take on his main act's song "Campus". Head over there now to check 'em out.

Tyondai Braxton Central Market album review here
Tyondai Braxton has been making music, patiently and maybe a bit pensively, in New York for most of the past decade, both in the ecstatic prog-rock band Battles and as an occasional loop-mining solo artist who can summon the sound of several bands over. None of his music has been small, and none of it has lacked for promise. But none of it even began to foretell the scale and sweep of Central Market.

Central Market is a big album for an age that has acquainted itself with thinking small about the album both as a vessel for sound and as a standard-bearer for new aesthetic vision. It's big in the sense that it's orchestral-- made in part with the Wordless Music Orchestra, a rangy New York ensemble proficient with everything from strings and xylophones to flutes and kazoos. But Central Market proves bigger in the sense that it's clearly been delivered as a statement record-- a summation of lots of ideas accrued over the years and lots of restless thinking about how best to engage those ideas in ways far from expected.

Braxton came up around the start of the 2000s in the same underground folds that fostered Black Dice and Animal Collective. He wrote music that shared certain rustle-y, ritualistic traits with the early work of both, but Braxton was also more expressive from the start. Especially at startling (and all too rare) live shows that would find him sitting solo on a floor with a mess of effects and a microphone, he would layer loops upon loops of guitar sounds with vocals that he would bellow-- like some strange fusion of formless noise-music with the pent-up goth squirm of Morrissey or Robert Smith.

Vocals of the sort don't wander often into Central Market, but the emotive tilt of them figures into arrangements that address many shades of meaning and mood. "Opening Bell" begins it all with an expectant piano trill that builds as it couples with gamely whistling, dark electric guitar, and golden horns, all before spreading into a bright fantasia of strings played within the deep space of the most accomplished classical music. Braxton has a conservatory background and, maybe more importantly, a well-thumbed copy of The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century. Indeed, echoes of that book-- a suggestive survey of modern classical music by storied New Yorker critic Alex Ross-- linger in scores that evoke the studiousness and sonic spread of composers like Igor Stravinsky, Olivier Messiaen, György Ligeti, and many others who addressed both the state of the world and the very idea of "music" at its semiotic core.

Not that stoking seriousness is Central Market's sole province. Some of the barely recognizable vocalese in tracks like "Uffe's Woodshop" plays like the kind of almost goofy voice-pitch games that Braxton has played in Battles, a band he's helped rescue from what could otherwise be a mere triumph of rock technicians. And the ways that slide whistles and kazoos dance around portentous guitar in a track like "The Duck and the Butcher" make much of their sourcing from, well, slide whistles and kazoos.

Some of the album is experimental and sly, but most of Central Market is searchingly big and magnanimous. The centerpiece, "Platinum Rows", flits through stately reserve and composed chaos over 10-plus minutes, given to deep drama and comic celebration that thrive as both for not really showing their cards as either. And as the mood constricts and descends into darkness toward the end-- especially in the guitar/vocal-based "J. City", the only song that could be classed as rock at all-- Braxton stumps well for an internal logic at play from the beginning. How that logic manifests itself throughout can prove stunning at times and a bit scattered at others-- but it's always, in ways that count as an important achievement in the end, a galvanizing surprise.

Blackburn Recordings recently sent over this beautifully damaged psych-pop transmission from Robbie Robertson -- aka Sore Eros -- a songwriter who's collaborated with such luminaries as Panda Bear, Ariel Pink, Kurt Vile, and others. The fragile and slightly disorienting "Taal Compass" appears on the a-side of his new 7" single, which is out now on the label:

Sore Eros - Taal Compass 7"
Greetings all!
Here at Blackburn Recordings we're super psyched to announce the Sore Eros' Taal Compass b/w Wide Open 7" . Both “Taal Compass” and b-side “Wide Open” (which features space age post-punk hero Gary War on synths) are slow burners that reveal an understated majesty, but their style and execution suggest wildly different mindsets. The title track is plaintive, with songwriter and lead man Robert Robinson’s vocals emerging organically from the analog distortion that coats the song. Flip the record over for an atmospheric epic that builds gracefully to an overwhelming crescendo that certainly earns the name “Wide Open.”

2010-04-28 Eyjafjallajökull

Eyjafjallajökull(Wikipedia Eyjafjallajökull)
Eyjafjallajökull ―Icelandic for "island-mountain glacier"―is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland, situated to the north of Skógar and to the west of Mýrdalsjökull. The ice cap covers the caldera of the volcano with a summit elevation of 1,666 metres (5,466 ft). The volcano has erupted relatively frequently since the last glacial period, most recently from 1821 to 1823 and again in 2010.
The ice cap covers an area of about 100 square kilometres (39 sq mi), feeding many outlet glaciers. The south end of the mountain was once part of the island's Atlantic coastline, but over thousands of years the sea retreated some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi), with the former coastline now consisting of sheer cliffs with many waterfalls, of which the best known is Skógafoss. In strong winds, the water of the smaller falls can even be blown up the mountain.
The volcano, which has a crater 3–4 kilometres (1.9–2.5 mi) in diameter, erupted in 920, 1612 and again from 1821 to 1823 when it caused a glacial lake outburst flood or jökulhlaup. It has erupted twice in 2010―on 20 March and in April/May. The March event forced a brief evacuation of around 500 local people, but the 14 April eruption was ten to twenty times more powerful and caused substantial disruption to air traffic across Europe, and is ongoing.

The Cranberries - Dreams

Oh, my life is changing everyday,
In every possible way.
And oh, my dreams, it's never quiet as it seems,
Never quiet as it seems.

I know I've felt like this before, but now I'm feeling it even more,
Because it came from you.
And then I open up and see the person falling here is me,
A different way to be.

Ah, la da ah...

I want more imposible to ignore,
Imposible to ignore.
And they'll come true, impossible not to do,
Impossible not to do.

And now I tell you openly, you have my heart so don't hurt me.
You're what I couldn't find.
A totally amazing mind, so understanding and so kind;
You're everything to me.

Oh, my life,
Is changing every day,
In every possible way.

And oh, my dreams,
It's never quiet as it seems,
'Cause you're a dream to me,
Dream to me.

Ah, da, da da da, da, la...

Wikipedia Passion Pit
Passion Pit is an American electronic band from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Formed in 2007, the group consists of Michael Angelakos of Buffalo (lead vocals/keyboards), Ian Hultquist (keyboards/guitar), Ayad Al Adhamy (synth/samples), Jeff Apruzzese (bass/synth bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums). All of the band members, except Angelakos, attended Berklee College of Music.
The slang Passion Pit is derived from traditional Variety-speak used in the Hollywood industry publication. The trade used the slang to refer to drive-in theatres, because of their privacy and romantic allure for teenagers.

lastfmlogo.jpg The Happy Hollows Biography
The Happy Hollows are a raucous three piece indie-rock band from Los Angeles that play fast and irreverent noise-pop. The group is fronted by Sarah Negahdari (vocals/guitar) and held together by the rhythm section of Charlie Mahoney (bass/vocals) and Chris Hernandez (drums/vocals). The L.A. Times has described their sound as a “pugilistic mix of stinging guitars, turbulent rhythms, and shouted vocals” that “alternates between childlike experimentation and ferocious firestorm.” The AllMusic guide wrote that the band’s “appeal is immediate” and the Rock Insider Blog has characterized their live show as “explosive”. Nylon Magazine described their sound as “lo-fi distortion” mixed with “Kim Deal-esque vocals and racing rhythms.”

The Happy Hollows write melodic and quirky songs with odd arrangements. Among other things, the subjects of their tunes include Vietnam flashbacks, palindromes, the colors of the rainbow, labyrinths, time travel, mythical animals, and Tarot cards.

The band has opened for Deerhoof, Silversun Pickups, Japandroids, Earlimart, Midnight Movies, The Mae Shi, and WHY? among others.

Spells (2009)

Pitchfork:album reviews The Happy Hollows Spells here
L.A. power trio the Happy Hollows trade in an amalgam of grimy, affectless post-punk and crunchy 90s alt rock; Elastica would be a better reference point were the Hollows less informed by the unhurried California cool of their homebase. Flecks of heavy stoner fuzz and wafts of breezy modern rock blow in and out of Spells, but at its core, it's a ripper. Most of the credit goes to Sarah Negahdari; she's a powerful but economical guitarist, jutting in and out of the tracks like a jagged saw. And her voice, while thin at times, commands attention on both the stompers and the serenades; she's equally adept at twisting around the pile of power chords that is "Silver" as the unsettling buzz and hum of "Turtle and Hare". With all the right angles and sharp left turns underpinning Negahdari's acrobatic vocals, Spells can feel downright Deerhoofy at times, and while Spells goes glam and grunge where Deerhoof would opt for space and skronk, there's a feeling that this music could literally go anywhere-- and that Negahdari could figure out something to sing over it no matter where it might roam.

lastfmlogo.jpg Villagers Biography
‘Villagers’ began life as a nameless collection of musical poems, all under the pen of one Conor J. O’Brien. “Ultimately, I’ve learned that a song is not an isolated thing. You have to wash the dishes before you write a song. It should never be taken too seriously. It must be treated with joy and humour, regardless of the subject matter,” muses Conor, as he strokes his hairless chin.

“The aim is to feel the songs out. If I don’t surprise myself, then it is a worthless endeavour. Indeed, I would apply this attitude to all aspects of this project. The songs are quite decisive, but I have no idea what I am doing, or where I am going.” Again, he strokes his chin, this time with a look of resigned confusion. “Once the songs took shape, I asked some friends of mine to help me play them to people. When they kindly agreed, I decided that we would present ourselves as ‘Villagers’ – I don’t really know why. I think I like the name because it doesn’t offend the songs.” With this, he puts his clothes back on and bids me farewell. On returning to my office, I slip on a banana skin and subsequently die.

Iridium Flares is a multi-platform artistic project; the brainchild of Darren Woolridge.
The musical arm of this ambitious project sees Woolridge combine squelchy melodies with scratchy beats to create a haunting sound ripe with crescendo. Woolridge utilises an innovative and imaginative array of instruments to create his ionized sound clash; pitting glockenspiel against dark digital beats, static siren feedback against ukulele and even including body percussion to add an earthier layer to this atmospheric endeavour.
The result; a dense sedimentary structure of independent strata, pressing against one another to support an unpredictable and dramatic soundscape.

Marco Benevento (born July 22, 1977 in Livingston, New Jersey) is a pianist, organist and composer from Brooklyn, New York. Benevento is known for his effected piano work with his trio as well as his Hammond Organ and Wurlitzer Electric Piano work with the Benevento Russo Duo. Benevento has also been a member of the New York's jazz and experimental music scene since 1999.(Wikipedia Marco Benevento)

lastfmlogo.jpg Marco Benevento Biography
Marco Benevento is a young keyboardist whose jazz-rooted work has expanded to include indie rock, jam band, and post-rock/experimental influences. Born in 1977 and raised in the northern New Jersey town of Livingston, Benevento studied piano and befriended an aspiring drummer named Joe Russo in a junior-high detention hall. After high school, while Russo migrated westward to Boulder, CO, and fell into the hippie jam band scene there, the more jazz-inclined Benevento moved to Boston to attend the Berklee School of Music, from which he graduated in 1999 after studying keyboards under noted jazz pianist and instructor Joanne Brackeen. Following college, Benevento formed a popular Boston-area improvisational outfit called the Jazz Farmers, which continued when Benevento resettled in New York City in 2001. Running into his old junior-high buddy Russo at a Medeski, Martin & Wood gig, Benevento accepted an invitation to perform a series of duo gigs at the Knitting Factory, which turned into a full-time partnership as the Benevento/Russo Duo. Benevento has released four albums with Russo: Benevento/Russo Duo, Darts, Best Reason to Buy the Sun, and Play Pause Stop. Tying into Russo’s roots in the jam band scene, the duo also spent much of 2006 touring as half of former Phish leader Trey Anastasio’s backing band. In 2007, Benevento began a live residency at the New York club Tonic, which led to the August 2007 release of Live at Tonic, a three-CD set taken from those shows that ranges from traditional small-combo jazz to post-rock/experimental soundscapes. -Stewart Mason

Mantra Recordings King Of Woolworths Page here
Like a good tradesman, Mancunian Jon Brooks got his alter ego, the King of Woolworths, out to the people by peddling it himself.

Whether it was simply name checking his music on message boards, making it available to download on music sites or sending CDRs out to his wish list of celebrity fans, he took to the spirit of his stage name like Del Boy sniffing out hooky car stereos down the Nags Head.

That was just a year ago. Now he has a record deal, three singles under his belt and an album imminent, not to mention a list of fans as long as Man City's transfer list. His big break came when Mary Ann Hobbs picked up on his stuff off the internet, championed him on her Breezeblock show on Radio 1 and catapulted him in to mini-stardom. She even gave him his own DJ mix slot on her show, an honour usually only bestowed on dance music's elite.

Given all this, 'Ming Star' is now in sight - the baby he's been hard at work on is finally about to be unleashed but it might just be not what you're expecting.

A cinematic feel runs throughout with the King trying to recapture his childhood in audio form (for example, tracks like 'The Watchmakers Hands' and 'Theydon' hark back to the days when he watched TV programmes like the old Friday Film Specials). Other inspirations do creep in like French films of the 60's, London ('Kentish Town', 'Bakerloo' and 'Kite Hill') and Hammer Horror with 'Stalker Song' appearing in its full technicolor glory. The plan with this album was to mix up the styles without making it an incoherent listen. Well, he's done that alright.

This album is very special indeed, it's both autobiographical and earnestly honest. 'Ming Star' is also as close as you and I will probably get to seeing the world through the eyes of the King.

Enjoy it while you can.
