Lucy+Schwartz+schwartz.jpg

Lucy Schwartz is a singer/songwriter with an “old soul” that belies her young age of eighteen. Although her influences are varied, the result is a truly original and timeless musical voice. She just released a CD of original songs titled “Winter in June”. Lucy has been performing with her band at L.A. area clubs and this summer she also played the Palo Alto Music & Film Festival, Central Park’s Harlem Meer Music Festival and opened for Guggenheim Grotto at the Canal Room in NYC.

This fall brings the release of the film, “The Women” which features two new songs Lucy wrote for the opening scene and the closing scene of the movie! It has an entirely female, star-studded cast including Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, Annette Bening, Bette Midler, Debra Messing and is directed by Diane English. The soundtrack will also highlight all women artists such as KT Tunstall and introduces Lucy Schwartz performing her new songs “Beautiful” and “Count on Me”.

Lucy is the 2007 WINNER of the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) in the teen category for her song “I Don’t Know a Thing”. She was voted favorite artist in the October 2007 BMI podcast featuring Los Angeles songwriters. This year, Lucy’s songs have been featured on the TV series, “Reaper” and “Cashmere Mafia”. Her singing can also be heard on various TV shows including re-runs of the Emmy award winning series, Arrested Development. Now it can be told, the sultry chanteuse of “Mr. F” on Arrested Development is, in truth, the voice of Lucy.(last.fm Lucy Schwartz Biography)

"Help Me! Help Me!" EP (Jan.26)

LET ME LIKE IT DAILY UPDATED MUSICBLOG Page here
It's already more than a year ago that I featured Lucy Schwartz on here for the first time. I fell head over heels in love with Lucy's first release "Winter in June" and have been hoping and waiting for new songs from her ever since. The single "Gone Away" she released last year made my anticipation even higher and instantly became my favorite song of hers. Last week I found out about the new "Help Me! Help Me!" EP she's releasing January 26th. The new EP features earlier released singles like "Gone Away" and "Gravity" and three brand new songs.

Parenthetical+Girls+parentheticalgirls.jpg

Parenthetical Girls (formerly The Swastika Girls) is an experimental pop band formed in Everett, Washington, and based currently in Portland, Oregon.
Begun primarily as a recording project, the current touring version of the band consists of vocalist Zac Pennington, Rachael Jensen, Eddy Crichton and Matt Carlson, all sharing a variety of instrumental duties. Former touring members Jherek Bischoff and Sam Mickens (also of the band The Dead Science) continue to contribute to the group's recorded output.
Their music is notable for its combination of saccharine pop and experimental elements, and has been compared with such disparate acts as Brian Eno, T. Rex, Dirty Projectors, Philip Glass, Xiu Xiu, and Phil Spector (Bowers, 2006; Unterberger, 2006).
Originally taking their name from the Brian Eno composition "Swastika Girls", original members Zac Pennington and Jeremy Cooper self-released their limited run debut EP Christmas With Swastika Girls in 2002. Following Cooper's departure and a name change, Pennington released (((GRRRLS))), the band's vinyl-only debut album on his own Slender Means Society label in 2004. Recorded with the help of Jherek Bischoff and Jamie Stewart (of Xiu Xiu fame), (((GRRRLS))) features a total of seven songs repeated on both sides of the vinyl record, each side featuring the respective mixes of Stewart and Bischoff. This was followed by the digital-only self-release of their second Christmas-themed EP Christmas with Parenthetical Girls that same year, as well as their second album Safe as Houses (released by Slender Means Society in the United States and Acuarela Discos throughout Europe), the expanded CD reissue of the (((GRRRLS))) album, and a third self-released Christmas EP A Parenthetical Girls Family Christmas in 2006. A split 7-inch with the band The Dead Science was released by Obsolete Vernacular in 2007.(Wikipedia Parenthetical Girls)

Parenthetical Girls: Entanglements
Posted by anikainlondon on October 26, 2009 Page here
This is a brilliant album.
I heard a panpipe version of Windmills of Your Mind in a restaurant a couple of weeks ago and it reminded me of Parenthetical Girls and how great this album is. And then I found a really great song by Ellie Greenwich, which further reminded me of Parenthetical Girls.
Choral vocals, manic violins, circus-esque piano and horns… the album is so rich! It’s beautiful. Their Windmills of Your Mind cover blows my mind, it’s absolutely incredible. It has a dark, sinister feel… and Rachael Jensen has a wonderful voice. I love the line: were you suddenly aware that the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair? Lovely imagery.
Also worth an investigation is this album’s predecessor, the also excellent Safe As Houses. My favourite from that is The Weight She Fell Under. Listen to the lyrics. DARK!

NEW THESE NEW PURITANS - "ORION"
STEREOGUM Page here
The video for the 7-minute "We Went War" was an arresting way to introduce These New Puritans' second album Hidden, a collection that includes an array of sounds, including the thud of "a melon with cream crackers attached struck by a hammer, used to simulate the sound of a human head being smashed." These also mentioned the record would include "six-foot Japanese taiko drums, a thirteen piece brass and woodwind ensemble, sub-heavy beats, prepared piano, a children's choir," etc. You get the kids in "Orion" along with the warlike thud of the aforementioned taiko drums, some not previously mentioned chains, looped voices, and plenty of majestic tension. On paper it might sound like, basically, the kids discovered Matmos after Beat Pyramid and decided to go crazy in the studio, but they've figured out how to incorporate all these new elements into their post-punk, creating a compelling, challenging sound that goes beyond past Mark E. Smith-isms.

Sun+Kil+Moon.jpg

Sun Kil Moon is the project of singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek, best known for his previous band, Red House Painters. Sun Kil Moon sees Kozelek undertake the writing, composing, singing and guitar playing accompanied by Tim Mooney and Anthony Koutsos on drums, and Geoff Stanfield on bass.
The band is named after Korean lightweight boxer Sung-Kil Moon.
Sun Kil Moon's debut album, Ghosts of the Great Highway, first released in 2003 by Jetset Records, contains several songs concerned with true-life stories of deceased boxers, such as featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez, flyweight Pancho Villa, and also Duk Koo Kim.
Ghosts of the Great Highway was re-issued as a double CD on February 6, 2007 on Kozelek's own label, Caldo Verde. The second disc features six bonus tracks, including the cover of "Somewhere" written by Leonard Bernstein.
The band's follow-up Tiny Cities was released on November 1, 2005 on Kozelek's Caldo Verde Records. The album covers eleven songs by the indie/alternative group Modest Mouse.
Sun Kil Moon's third studio album is called April and was released April 1, 2008. It features guest vocals from Will Oldham and Ben Gibbard.(Wikipedia Sun Kil Moon)

Kozelek is known for covering songs from bands not normally associated to his genre of slow, introspective music. They are more than traditional covers, as they are extensively re-worked and re-interpreted to the point that they are often not recognizable to the originals, and take on a different meaning despite the lyrics remaining intact word-for-word. Kozelek’s 2000 solo debut Rock ‘n’ Roll Singer featured covers of songs by AC/DC and John Denver.

His solo 2001 follow-up, What’s Next to the Moon was an entire album of AC/DC songs done in his typically languid, hypnotically melancholy acoustic style. Even further back, Songs for a Blue Guitar, the 1996 Red House Painters album, featured covers of Yes’s Long Distance Runaround, Paul McCartney & Wings’s Silly Love Songs and The Cars’ “All Mixed Up”. Tiny Cities is very much in this tradition, taking the often frenetic, noisy songs of Modest Mouse and transforming them into haunting, acoustic guitar-dominated midtempo ballads filled with a deep-seated, haunting melancholy.(last.fm Sun Kil Moon Biography)

Pitchfork staff lists page here
The banality of evil's got nothing on the banality of music stardom-- not in 2009, anyway. Consider: Frumptastic Scottish virgin breaks debut-LP sales records; cherub-cheeked Idol appropriates rock hedonism; and Phoenix, the decade-old French pop outfit known to longtime Pitchfork readers as trendsetters in "the sparsely-attended arena of new soft-rock," become, well, sorta famous.

And it's richly deserved: From its giddy opening salvo to a finale that makes chippy guitars and keyboards set to harpsichord seem as natural a pairing as drums-and-bass, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a joy of geeky craftsmanship, irony-free cliché, and simple animal pleasures. No accident that the album pits Franz Liszt's celebrity against Mozart's musicianship, only to expose it as a false dichotomy. Or that Phoenix licensed its effervescent jam "1901" to an ad for the Cadillac SRX-- a crossover vehicle. For a local-boys-done-good victory performance this autumn, "Take Away Shows" auteur Vincent Moon staged the band at the site of that most hackneyed of package-tour icons, the Eiffel-frickin-Tower. But Moon knew what he was about. Bystanders-- foreign tourists, a beaming bride and groom-- are at first tentative, confused by the camera crew converging on these ordinary looking buskers. Then Phoenix reach the crackerjack chorus, shedding their street clothes for rockstar-superhero duds. Oh how banal, and utterly exceptional.

Institute Of Joy (CD, Album) (10 Worlds 2009)

The incredible work of two London-based musicians and producers, Zeben Jameson and Mo Morris, A Mountain Of One aren’t interested in making music that is easily listened to and easily forgotten. Rather, their ambitious and transcendental sonics are designed for ultimate excitement and maximum fulfilment.

And it’s this belief in the restorative properties of music that is etched into every groove, every beat, every vocal turn, every nuance of their mood altering and mood enhancing album. Although Mo and Zeb’s musical paths first crossed a decade ago, it wasn’t until 2006 that A Mountain Of One (“It’s about inner belief and inner strength,” explains Mo, “It’s about empowering you by listening to the music. It sounds a bit wanky, but that’s what it is really”) came into existence. And really it’s a union made in musical heaven, Zeb’s astounding musical talents (a multi-instrumentalist, he’s toured the world with the likes of Oasis, Tricky and The Pretenders) coalescing perfectly with Mo’s inventive widescreen vision.(MySpace A Mountain Of One Biography)

THE HURST REVIEW Page here
With Transference, Spoon brings their old habits into a new decade, launching yet another record that sounds, at first, to be a thing of casual genius. Actually, it may be their most tossed-off, flat-out rough-sounding album since the days of Series of Sneaks; Daniel has called it an “uglier” record than the ones that came before it, which has the ring of truth to it. The ornate horns and chamberlain, glistening chords and crystalline production of Ga Ga is replaced by songs that drone, by simpler arrangements and quick-and-dirty, live-on-the-floor recordings. Opening track “Before Destruction” sets the template: A ragged acoustic guitar is strummed over the hum of studio feedback and clattering percussion, Daniel’s vocal sounding rough and lo-fi in a way that’s almost jarring after the cleaner lines of Ga Ga.

Martin Luther King Chavez Dosh (born September 6, 1972), known in music as Dosh, is a musician and multi-instrumentalist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As an artist, Dosh is a percussionist who uses various electronics, often with a Fender Rhodes. Dosh has been characterized mostly as experimental and electronic-based due to his use of many samplers and looping machines and the rhythmic feel of much of his music, with songs often relying on Dosh alone on keyboards, marimba, and drums. Dosh is often in collaboration with other musicians during live sets and on recording, both locally and nationally known.
Dosh's most recent release from May 2008 is Wolves and Wishes. The album features appearances from Bonnie ’Prince’ Billy, Andrew Bird, Fog, Odd Nosdam, and long-time contributors, Mike Lewis and Jeremy Ylvisaker.(Wikipedia Dosh)

The Long Lost

The Long Lost consists of husband-&-wife Alfred (a.k.a. Daedelus) and Laura Darlington. In contrast to the avant-electronics and hip-hop aesthetics of Alfred’s music as Daedelus, The Long Lost is a union of two songwriters & producers with a penchant for sad sounds and delicate, electro-acoustic melodies. Psychedelic lullabies for lovers and the lovelorn. As well as Sa-Ra, Laura has also sung for Flying Lotus. A fascinating and utterly individual project, The Long Lost take the subject of love away from the cliches and hackneyed wailing of the mainstream and reconnect it to those strange and uncontrollable emotions we’re all so in thrall to.(last.fm The Long Lost Biography)

Japandroids+223577824.jpg

Japandroids is a musical duo from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Japandroids was formed in 2006, and comprises Brian King on guitar and David Prowse on drums. The two met at the University of Victoria, where King studied science and Prowse anthropology.
They originally intended to find a third member to act as lead vocalist, but later decided to forego having a specific lead singer and simply share vocal duties. The band self-released two limited edition EPs, 2007's All Lies and 2008's Lullaby Death Jams, prior to signing with independent Canadian label Unfamiliar Records in January of 2009. Their debut LP, Post-Nothing was released mid-2009. They were subsequently signed to Polyvinyl in June of 2009. Japandroids was featured as the X3 Artist of the month by Aux.tv, CBC Radio 3 and Exclaim! Magazine for May 2009.
The name Japandroids came from two other band name ideas: Japanese Scream (from Prowse) and Pleasure Droids (from King).
Occasionally they will spell it without vowels, as JPNDRDS.(Wikipedia Japandroids)

Disliking teen-pop gets you cast as some sort of rockist Luddite these days, but beyond the fact that most of it doesn't sound like stuff I'd have wanted to hear as a high schooler, it doesn't feel like music for teens either. (Hell, it's more tween-pop than teen-pop anyway.) But what about the kind of stuff that, say, the "1979" video lionized-- breaking into your folks' liquor cabinet, obliterating the speed limit despite just getting your learner's permit, leaving your hometown for the first time and discovering how small it feels. What about jamming out with your best bud and deciding to call it a band?

These are the kind of gut-level concerns Post-Nothing trades in, and I know, on paper it describes an itch that a late-1990s Vagrant record could scratch. And combined with the fact that the band is called freakin' Japandroids, it's easy to not take it seriously. Which is fine, since Japandroids do not make particularly complex music: Brian King plays broad chords stewed in mid-90s fuzz (think Superchunk) while David Prowse splays spastic but never showy drum fills that beg to be pounded out on your steering wheel. There's maybe one overdub on the whole thing and occasionally, both of them yell at the same time. Several songs have less than five lines. And while they've been known to cover Mclusky's "To Hell With Good Intentions" live, what makes Post-Nothing such a blast is how Japandroids tend to embody the opposite sentiment of that song title. This is terminally catchy music played with punk's enthusiasm and velocity, and maybe it's the fact that there's only two dudes in this band that makes you feel like joining in to bash along. It's as fun as an ill-gotten sixpack and there really aren't too many bands doing stuff like this well anymore.

Recent trends, however, might make you think otherwise: Due to their two-man setup and no-frills recording, Japandroids risk being lumped into the increasingly tiresome no-fi/noise-pop scene that finds bands using distortion to tear through the fabric of the medium and, in some cases, drown out weak songs. Either way, there's some form of obfuscation, but what makes Post-Nothing such a thrill is the manner in which Japandroids hold absolutely nothing back. As contagious as any of the lyrics, melodies, riffs, or drum fills are, their energy and lack of self-consciousness is every bit as equally lovable. Opening mission statement "The Boys Are Leaving Town" could be seen as a goof on Thin Lizzy, but the response, "Will we find our way back home?", is delivered with such conviction that between those two lines, "Boys" displays a palpable desperation. Six tracks later, the question is still unresolved-- amidst the cyclical thrum of "Sovereignty", they observe: "It's raining, OH-OH! in Vancouver/ But I don't give a fuck/ 'Cause I'm far from home tonight."
