A Dead Forest Index: new single
Echo My Unborn Children’s Voices

In August 2009, brothers Adam and Sam Sherry returned home to record their debut album (out in early 2010) at Auckland’s York St Studios with their friend and engineer Simon Gooding (Over The Atlantic, 7 Worlds Collide). The brothers, who once called Auckland home moved overseas in their late teens. Sam moved to the UK and Adam travelled throughout Europe, following around one of his musical heroes, a Romanian gypsy band named Taraf de Haidouks. They both now live in Melbourne, Australia.

‘Anchoring The Hands’ is the duo’s first single and comes after their entrancing first EP Empty And Dark I Shall Raise My Lantern, that introduced fans to their unique blend of chemically infused vocal loops, dark minimalist drum beats and sparse, audacious guitar chords. The song perfectly displays a complete cross section of their musical collection, and brings together different elements of their vast song writing structure. They are at one time a chugging indie pop band; at another turn they blend Gothic rhythms and Eastern European symphonies; and around another corner they are a beautifully disciplined vocal group. Where some of A Dead Forest Index’s other songs focus on just one of those elements, ‘Anchoring The Hands’ contains them all.

A Dead Forest Index recently completed a month long reservation at Melbourne music venue The Workers Club, where they gained some rave reviews for their unique use of vocal loops and haunting harmonies. In January they are heading to New Zealand to play at the Campus A Low Hum festival and a show at Auckland’s Wine Cellar.

Pit er Pat is a musical group. They began in Chicago as the trio of Fay Davis-Jeffers on keyboard and vocals, Rob Doran on bass, and Butchy Fuego on drums. Their sound is very atmospheric and has a dark ambiance that is similar to other instrumental avant-garde groups. Much of the group's offerings are rhythmically complex as well. The vocals offered by Fay give the band a well rounded sound like that of another female fronted indie band, the Fiery Furnaces, whom Pit er Pat toured with in the winter of 2007.
The group released nine records between 2004- 2008, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico. After the album "High Time" was released in October 2008, Doran left the group for other pursuits. In the spring of 2009, Fuego and Davis-Jeffers toured as a duo for the first time, performing all new music. The tour included a performance at All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Minehead, England.
In 2004, Pit er Pat performed on the second volume of the Burn to Shine DVD series. On July 7, 2007 Butchy Fuego participated in the Yamantaka Eye (Boredoms) lead drum collaboration/concert 77 Boadrum at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, New York.
On their 2007 Covers EP, Pit er Pat had guest instrumentalist add some woodwind and brass to their sound. Billy Blaze played flute and tenor saxophone, and Nick Broste (Mucca Pazza) played trombone.(Wikipedia Pit er Pat)

Ah P (Lam Pang) writes the lyrics and the music, which he also plays, while Nicole (Nicole Au Kin-ying) sings. They occasionally invite friends (Ah Suet, who speaks French, for instance) or relatives (Nicole's younger sister) to participate to their albums and shows. They established Harbour Records with four other indie bands from Hong Kong, and on it released their 2004 debut album the ok thing to do on sunday afternoon is to toddle in the zoo. Having only been in existence for a few years, Norwegian group I Was a King has quickly gained recognition from the media, musicians, and fans alike. Front man Frode Strømstad has been said to have a unique gift of creating addictive melodies that hold distinctive roots to the 60’s, distorted through a 90’s indie scene filter.

In 2007, I Was A King released their debut, Losing Something Good for Something Better. It was labeled “Royally brilliant” and given 8 out of 10 by NME. The Independent, and The Sunday Times gave equally flattering praise and The Guardian said; “Norwegian wunderkind Strømstad takes ol’ lankhair’s ramshackle rock and squeezes it through a dreampop filter… If Alan McGee hadn’t wound down Creation, this lot would have been first in the queue to sign on the dotted line. File next to: Fountains Of Wayne, Apples In Stereo, Neutral Milk Hotel, Strawberry Wine-era My Bloody Valentine.”

The new album “I Was a King” features collaborations from Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Smith (Danielson) and Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor). The album was recorded at Marlborough Farms (Brooklyn, NY) and mixed by Nick Terry (Primal Scream, The Libertines, Klaxons).

A digital and 7″ import single; It’s all you / Norman Bleik, is released through Norwegian and Danish labels, Hype City/Morningside. Their self-titled album is out for sale through Hype City in Norway, Morningside in Denmark, and The Control Group (El Perro del Mar, The Figurines) in the US. The album recently received a 6/6 rating in one of Norway’s largest newspapers, Dagbladet, and has already gained comparison to acts such as Teenage Fanclub and Guided By Voices.(official website about the band)

The lead singer of I Was a King is named Frode Stromstads– and what’s amazing is, that’s not even the most awesome thing about them. Sure, this Norwegian rock outfit wears their influences on their sleeves, but damn if they don’t have great taste. Imagine: The power chords and sugar-rush hooks of Teenage Fanclub or New Pornographers, wed to the noisy, ramshackle production of early Pavement and filled with wicked guitar freakouts worthy of Hendrix. Not exactly what you’d expect from a group with close ties to Scandanavia’s native Christian music scene, but then, the only evidence of religiosity that you’ll hear on this terrific album is a cover of “Hard Luck and Bad News,” written by Christian rock pioneer Larry Norman. Here’s an album that’s drunk on big hooks, smart songwriting, and rock-god guitar heroics– a perfect shot of power pop madness, just in time for summer.(THE HURST REVIEW Page here)

"Dance Mother is a fitting name for Telepathe's debut album: the band's mix of hard-edged beats and softer electronic textures often feels strangely primordial, like it's growing and evolving into something that will eventually become dance music. Despite the drums that propel every track, these songs lean toward the dancefloor but only step on it occasionally, preferring instead to cast hazy, free-flowing atmospheres.Telepathe began with these experimental roots on their first EPs, gradually getting more pop with each release. [..] Dance Mother is often fascinating, and a big step forward for Telepathe without losing what made them distinctive in the first place."

Serena Maneesh

Serena Maneesh (sometimes spelled Serena-Maneesh or shortened to S-M) is an alternative rockband from Oslo, Norway.
In an interview with Village Indian, Emil Nikolaisen, the songwriter of the band, explains the rather mysterious word-constellation the following way:
’Serena’ is an adaptation of the Norwegian word for veil...The name came out from this veil you can see, you can see the melody through a stressful storm of noise. That’s what I love about music – you can work with this veil. There is so much stress in the world, you know? Serena could also mean serenity, serene. There are all these connotations. Then you see glints -- you see something incredible, but it’s in the moment. It’s through this veil. ‘Maneesh’ is a rewriting of the Norwegian word manesje, which is the area around a stage. Sirkus Merano, remember that? We later found out it was also the Hindu Lord of the Mind. But it is more a picture…if you look at a stage in a circus or opera, there’s an area surrounding the stage containing a lot of elements. Small, subtle elements that make the stage presence that much more powerful. That’s incredible. If you take that to the sound world…The whole thing is talking about the sound elements...For that reason, it's perfect. If ever two words conjured the elemental nature of this band’s sound, they are Serena-Maneesh.(Wikipedia Serena Maneesh)

The long awaited second album is set to be released March 2010 on the renowned british indie-label 4AD.
4AD Page here
Currently, the band plays live as a five-piece and on record there are too many contributors to list here, but Serena-Maneesh is essentially Emil Nikolaisen. Born in the remote village of Moi into a musical family (one sister Hilma plays bass with the band, while another, Elvira, sings on Serena-Maneesh’s records and is a pop star in her own right), Emil is Norwegian rock royalty; it’s hard to find a band there that he hasn’t either played with or produced and he’s also been nominated for a Spellemannsprisen, the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy. He’s not just influential in Norway either: Sufjan Stevens plays vibraphone, flute and piano on the new album, The Dandy Warhols, Nine Inch Nails and Oasis have all invited Serena-Maneesh to tour with them and they are set to release a split single with Fucked Up.

But what exactly has this seemingly prolific perfectionist been doing since 2005? The band spent most of 2006 and the first bit of 2007 on tour, including support slots with Nine Inch Nails, and The Dandy Warhols in addition to Leeds, Reading, SXSW, Siren Fest, and extensive tours all over the world. Starting in 2008, he says he “went back underground”, and he means it quite literally – he spent the time recording the new Serena-Maneesh album, S-M 2: Abyss In B Minor, in a cave on the outskirts of Oslo.

“Studio environments often get on my nerves,” he explains, “and I love the underworld, you can silently head down there and do as you please, leave the world behind. So we found this huge cave with stone walls, it looked like a refugee hideout from World War II, with a huge, undiscovered treasure of sound.”

After spending three days installing microphones and a 24-track, two-inch recorder, Emil hit the button marked ‘Record’ and work began on the album in this “rock’n’roll chamber of magic.” He then spent a further year “in different locations with different people, capturing and gathering moments, failures, sounds”. Then, with the assistance of the likes of Nick Terry, who has worked with Klaxons and Primal Scream, and Can associate René Tinner, he set about mixing the results – spending an incredible eight days on each song.

Memory Tapes
Seek Magic [Sincerely Yours / Acéphale / Something in Construction; 2009]
here

No one ever wants to admit that summer's totally over, but it's even tougher this year considering how fun it all was-- seems like every other day, an evocatively named band would come about and contribute to this glo-fi/dreambeat/chillwave thing that was perfect for those unbearably humid August nights rife with possibility, imagining an alternate universe where the narcotic of choice in danceclubs were Galaxie 500 and Saint Etienne records.

More than a few of these singles came from Philadelphia's Dayve Hawk in the guise of either Memory Cassette, Weird Tapes, or Memory Tapes. To this point, he'd served as something of a microcosm for this sound, which has created intriguingly hazy, wistful but beat-informed one-offs and EPs, but nothing weighty enough to get it past "something we did that one summer," as if it were a road trip or ill-fated romance recalled years later. That was before Seek Magic, a record of achingly gorgeous dance-pop that captures both the joy of nostalgia and the melancholic sense that we're grasping for good times increasingly out of reach.

Initially, Seek Magic's power derives from an intensely personalized ability to unlock hidden chambers in our memory banks. The half-submerged guitars that introduce "Swimming Field" suggest this is as a soundtrack for a restless evening, but between its F-G chord progression and aqueous thumb-piano and panflute synths, I'm reminded of scorching July days vibing out to Wilco's A Ghost Is Born. Instrumental breaks "Pink Stones" and "Run Out" recall the unconventional beauty of Apehx Twin's Richard D. James Album. "Green Knight" smacks of Police's "Wrapped Around Your Finger" in its verse and any number of mid-80s light funk with its guitar licks, the sneaker squeak in the instrumental break is one of the most evocative found sounds I've heard in a while.

seekmagic_.jpg

Seek Magic is something of an inhabitable universe that proves there's far more to Hawk's sound than a way with reverb and passing familiarity with dance loops. The rubber-smacks-road beat of "Bicycle" would be content to mirror its titular vehicle, but nearly every minute packs some sort of detailed compositional surprise: the widescreen breakthrough where Hawk's androgynous vocals shake lo-fi two minutes in, the bass breakdown that soon rights itself into the second half's backbone, and the choral coda that lays a euphoric vocal sigh over wave-running New Order guitars. By comparison, "Plain Material" is streamlined, but not by much-- the way Hawk's voice hits the fuzzed-out guitar chords, you might think this was an unearthed Flaming Lips track, and at first, it sounds like the first time on Seek Magic that he'll adhere to a standard verse-chorus structure. It does, but only after a drum beat cribbed straight from Organized Noize turns in a bridge of teen screams imported from In Ghost Colours' nastier breakdowns.

And yet in Seek Magic's centerpieces, you sense a nocturnal unease usually attributed to more spare albums. "Stop Talking" could've been content to ride out its gummy bass riff to infinity, but it morphs through so many phases in its seven minutes that the half-time post-rock finale doesn't feel tacked-on. On the following song, "Graphics", Hawk offers an unnervingly lonely sentiment-- "I don't even recognize the sound of your voice, the feel of your touch, you could be alone even though I'm here by your side." Lyrics are mere suggestions through most of Seek Magic, but Hawk lays out an "I can't go on, I'll go on" vibe throughout. One second, he sighs "this is the last time" and immediately thereafter, "one more time, baby, one more time." It's a sentiment that's underpinned great works of art from Daft Punk ("One More Time" natch), F. Scott Fitzgerald (This Side of Paradise), Kanye West ("Why can't life always be this easy?"), and um, Old Milwaukee-- the times where you think "it doesn't get any better than this," and it's simultaneously the happiest and saddest thing you can say.

Bear in Heaven is a Brooklyn-based rock band formed by Jon Philpot. The sound of the band incorporates influences from psychedelic music, electronic music, and krautrock.
Jon Philpot has previously released music as part of the duo Presocratics, in collaboration with guitarist and composer Need Thomas Windham. Presocratics released two albums on the record label Table of the Elements in 2001; both were produced by Philpot.(Wikipedia Bear in Heaven)

Red Bloom of the Boom, Bear in Heaven's first full-length album with the full band, was released in 2007 by the Hometapes record label.
Elliott left the band after the completion of the recordings of Red Bloom of the Boom to focus on School of Seven Bells and his solo project, Ateleia. Bear in Heaven now performs as a four-piece with Philpot on vocals, guitar and keyboards; Wills on guitar and bass; Bazarra on bass and keyboards; and Stickney on drums.
Their most recent album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth, received the "Best New Music" award from Pitchfork Media, with the reviewer stating: "Beast Rest Forth Mouth is as familiar-feeling as it is difficult to pinpoint. Mostly made up of textural, spacious three- to four-minute pop anthems with towering choruses, BRFM is a welcome reminder that an album doesn't have to be bombastic to feel huge and important. Take out the earbuds and let it fill a space: This is music that's bigger than your iPod―music you'll want to feel all around you. Though not quite coming out of nowhere, BRFM seems like a surprise gift―a striking consolidation of the spiky psych-prog tendencies of their debut into a pop framework."

Bear in Heaven
Beast Rest Forth Mouth
[Hometapes; 2009]

While it may seem as if there's not a new release without a hyphenated genre to give it birth, Bear in Heaven's second LP feels fresh simply because it resists easy categorization or comparison. This isn't to say it's sonically groundbreaking, though-- fitting for an album whose title references the four main navigational directions, Beast Rest Forth Mouth is as familiar-feeling as it is difficult to pinpoint. Mostly made up of textural, spacious three- to four-minute pop anthems with towering choruses, BRFM is a welcome reminder that an album doesn't have to be bombastic to feel huge and important. Take out the earbuds and let it fill a space: This is music that's bigger than your iPod-- music you'll want to feel all around you.

Though not quite coming out of nowhere, BRFM seems like a surprise gift-- a striking consolidation of the spiky psych-prog tendencies of their debut into a pop framework. In terms of career gear-shifts, the move Caribou made with Andorra is the most recent precedent. Though at 41 minutes the album is economical and sharp in its execution, the band-- all from Georgia and Alabama-- still imbues its compositions with the generosity of spirit that makes the best Southern rock so invigorating. "Beast in Peace" opens the record with a gentle lockstep before shifting seamlessly into a mile-wide chorus. Then, they expand that chorus even further, like switching to the widest camera lens to capture a vista they just realized the full vastness of. Elsewhere, as its title indicates, "Ultimate Satisfaction" is an IMAX-wide ode to what starts out as a simple thought, then turns bodily-- the refrain of "coming down!" charts the sensation spreading like a spasm. That towering exultation is also felt on the primal "Deafening Love". While aiming for a similar sense of awe-inspiring bliss, "Love" widens the focus and luxuriates in the tremors, approximating a more protracted take on Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song".

Yet Bear in Heaven's greatest trick is creating music that evokes the sort of physicality and scope that could soundtrack a Hollywood film, but also works equally well at stirring up intimate bodily passion. Lush synth beds, warm electronics accenting polyrhythms, and Jon Philpot's yearning, boyish howl coalesce into a vibe that's muscular without being macho, and which strikes a rare balance between nuanced emotion and overwhelming sensation. Even when delving into more disconcerting subject matter-- dabbling in self-loathing on "Wholehearted Mess" or confronting paranoia on the slinky "You Do You"-- Philpot still manages to imbue the songs with an atmosphere of seduction and intrigue.

An album like BRFM couldn't exist without a paean to the most severe and high-stakes of endeavors, and first single "Lovesick Teenagers" more than meets the requirements for 2009's Epic Song About Tortured Young Romance. With briskly alternating synth chords spitting by like fast-moving highway stripes, the titular couple are doomed to crash, but most likely in a JG Ballard sort of way. The pair martyr themselves in order to eternalize their passion, and the band is generous enough to resurrect them later, in the reprise of "Teenagers" that closes the album, seamlessly and surprisingly emerging from "Casual Goodbye". As a gesture, it's a slight nod backwards to the suite-like structures of their debut, but moreoever a celebration of abundance that wraps up an album overflowing with feeling. It's also an exclamation point signaling that Bear in Heaven not only clearly recognize their own best instincts, they're not shy about dwelling on them. Sure, bands can adapt to the current musical climate by adding extras to LPs, tweaking release dates to accommodate fan interest, or even giving away their music free. A curtain call like "Teenagers", though: now that's generosity.

Mos Def: "The Ecstatic"
THE HURST REVIEW here
As the title of Mos Def’s fourth album, the word “ecstatic” doesn’t mean what you might think it means. As the enigmatic MC explained to USA Today, he’s not using the term in its present-day connotation, but rather as it was used in the 17th century, as a word to describe someone whose ideas are so ahead of their time, the only explanations can be divine inspiration or pure madness.
The rapper’s fans will be relieved to know that the title of The Ecstatic carries with it no irony, no artificially high expectations: Really and truly, Mos Def is creating music at a level that surely derives from some mixture of supernatural aid and twisted genius. He sounds hungry and engaged, arguably for the first time since his classic debut, Black on Both Sides, but what’s odd is that, while this is a triumphal return to form after a decade of noodling around with odd vanity projects and paying more attention to his film career than his music, it isn’t exactly a comeback, either. Comeback albums imply that the artist is making a deliberate attempt to consolidate his strengths and prove to fans that he can still bring the heat. On The Ecstatic, Mos Def doesn’t sound particularly interested in proving anything to anyone. Commercial considerations are entirely removed from the equation, and it’s so different from anything else he’s done that it’s hard to hear it a self-conscious attempt at career rehabilitation. Instead, this is music rich with something else altogether: A real sense of play, a wide-eyed wonder at the possibilities afforded by music and a complete surrender to the artist’s own, staggeringly deep imagination.

Signe Tollefsen is a US-Dutch singer-songwriter, settled in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her music has been described as European Country-contemporary Folk, Dreamfolk and Folk Noir.

Growing up in Utrecht, the Netherlands, as the child of an American father and a Dutch mother, Signe Tollefsen started to sing at the age of 7, and compose her first songs on guitar at the age of 14, inspired by artists such as Janis Joplin, Ani DiFranco, and Paul Simon. At 15, she moved to the UK to finish high school and study classical singing at the Royal Northern College of Music. She eventually gave up classical song, for studies in philosophy at the University of Hull, when she started singing her own songs in public.
She moved back to the Netherlands to take classes at the Amsterdam Conservatory with René van Barneveld ('Tres Manos', the Urban Dance Squad). In 2005, she played with Stephen Malkmus ('S.M.', Pavement) in Italy and Germany.
She toured the UK, where she played at the BBC, and in December 2006 she won the audience prize and the prize for best musician at the Grolsch Grote Prijs van Nederland in the category singer/songwriter, thus qualifying to record a promotion single and to be seen on well-known stages.(Wikipedia Signe Tollefsen Biography)

PHANTOGRAM+treelinesquare.jpg

PHANTOGRAM is a Psych-Rock, Electronic, Hip-Hop Influenced duo from Upstate, NY consisting of Joshua Carter and Sarah Barthel. Their music can be described as a culmination of unique street beat rhythms, and psychedelic melodies, with combined technology and organic textures.(last.fm PHANTOGRAM Biography)

Phantogram's unique dance-friendly sound has helped them play as opening acts for more established bands such as Ra Ra Riot, Yeasayer, Brazilian Girls and The Slip. They've also performed at the SXSW festival in 2009 and are scheduled to play at Camp Bisco in July 2009. Barthel has said of their sound, "We wanted to incorporate all our own influences and created our own sound that's a combination of Serge Gainsbourg, sampling and Detroit hip-hop. How I explain it to the customers who come into the restaurant where I work is that we sound like a combination of Kanye West and Radiohead."
In interviews, the band has described their sound concisely under the genre of "street beat, psyche pop."
The genre comes from a blog post written by fellow Saratoga Spring musician Matthew Loiacano, who described Phantogram's sound as "street beat, psyche pop" after seeing them perform with Yeasayer at Skidmore College .
On October 13, 2009, Phantogram announced via their Twitter account that they had signed with Barsuk Records. Barsuk has been home to bands such as Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley and Mates of State .(Wikipedia Phantogram History)

Hung and Power grew up in a village outside Bristol, and both had made music separately while growing up. Hung was influenced by Aphex Twin's acid techno while Power was a fan of post-rock band Mogwai. They developed a friendship while attending art school in 2004, and began working together, initially to create the soundtrack to a film made by Hung. Immediately after forming, Fuck Buttons started to play live whenever possible, soon amassing a dedicated cult following throughout the UK. Hung and Power use a variety of instruments including casiotone keyboards and children's toys such as a Fisher-Price karaoke machine.Their name was chosen to sound "playful and abrasive".
Time Out magazine described the band's live sound as "adrenaline pumping, ear purging slab of towering, pristine noise…"
The duo signed to All Tomorrow's Parties-affiliated ATP Recordings in 2007, and released a limited-edition 7" single named "Bright Tomorrow", which received complimentary reviews from such sources as Drowned in Sound, Pitchfork Media (who described it as "something like the sun rising over the ocean... then going supernova"), Mojo (it became their #1 Mojo Playlist Single for that month) and Stereogum.
Combined with an upsurge in reviews of their live performances at the Supersonic, Truck and Portishead-curated ATP festivals in the second half of 2007, this attention resulted in Fuck Buttons being included in many end of year newspaper, magazine and online articles predicting them as a 'Hot Tip' for 2008. These included New-Noise, who said that "rarely have two men sounded so much like the end of the world"and British newspaper The Observer, which called their sound "A joyous racket of swirling atmospherics and percussive gunfire" in an article highlighting them in a new wave of intelligent, literate British pop music.(Wikipedia Fuck Buttons Biography)

Tarot Sport
Aided by producer Andrew Weatherall, who famously produced Primal Scream’s Screamadelica, Fuck Buttons decided to overhaul their sound and go forward with a noisier, bouncier version, scraping the floor with a heavy dose of synthesizers and drum machines. Unlike their first album, 2008’s Street Horrrsing, which built musical soundscapes using guitars and My Bloody Valentine style distorted noise, Tarot Sport is concocted purely from the electronic arts. The seven track, epic monologue is a journey into the darkness of space, time and psychedelia, at times getting lost inside itself but always emerging with a grand design. Fuck Buttons is a noise band, and despite offering a somewhat eclectic output of Animal Collective-esque synth pop their melodies lie in the meandering drones that sit beneath each song, five of which are over eight minutes long.

Apparat.jpg

Apparat (Sascha Ring) is a German electronic musician living in Berlin and one of the owners of Shitkatapult records. Starting out with dance floor-oriented techno, he later started to create ambient music and more recently became "more interested in designing sounds than beats".
In 2004, he appeared at a John Peel session. The tracks from this session were rerecorded and reworked in the studio and released as Silizium EP in 2005, as a tribute.
He collaborated with Ellen Allien in 2003 on the album Berlinette, and again in 2006 on the album Orchestra of Bubbles.
In 2007 he formed his own band to play the album Walls live. Raz Ohara joined him playing the stage piano and Jörg Waehner on drums. Next to playing these live shows, he continued to play his solo live sets, touring with Transforma Visuals.
In May 2009 he released the self-titled album with Modeselektor under the name Moderat on BPitch Control. They have collaborated previously on an EP named Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit which was released as a limited 12" in 2002.
In April 2009 he received the Qwartz Dancefloor (Electronic Music Award).
