One Life Stand
Taylor hinted that the album was going to be "a bit calmer this time" in comparison to Made in the Dark with songs that are "more mid-tempo and disco influenced". The album will be released in 2010. Currently putting the final touches to the fourth album, Hot Chip have announced a new UK tour for February of 2010; after the album is released on the February 8th, 2010.(Wikipedia Hot Chip One Life Stand)

Hello! As you may already have heard, we can now reveal some diverting facts.... as events relentlessly continue to unfold inside the confines of Camp Hot Chip, we can reveal some diverting facts and interesting details of our plans for next year. There will be a new album, named 'One Life Stand', set for release on February 8th, to warm the cockles of your soul right in the middle of the bleak mid-winter. We're just completing the finishing touches right now, and we're also gearing up for a return, possibly triumphant, to the live arena, as a UK tour is also in the offing for February.(Hot Chip official website)

STEREOGUM'S 25 MOST ANTICIPATED ALBUMS OF 2010
NOVEMBER 25, 2009
(stereogum Page here)
This year in music was great and we'rea gonna let it finish (sorry), but in terms of notable album releases the ship has sailed. No offense, 30 Seconds To Mars. While the Gummys' virtual poll booth remains open for a few more days (did we mention filling out the ballot enters you to win the 50 Best Albums Of The Decade on vinyl and an Apple TV?), we're gonna look to the future, Conan. And we like the sound of it! If 2010 is gonna be anything like 2009 -- skyrocketing unemployment, a Summer Of Death, flu and vampire pandemics -- we're gonna need a bigger headphones. But today we've got 25 reasons why 2010 might even be > 2009. Our list was limited to releases (some of which we've even heard) that have been confirmed (or close enough), but don't stop believin' in Strokes IV, guys.

Toro Y Moi is the stage name used by recording artist, Chazwick Bundick. His music has taken on many forms since he began recording himself, but he is now identified with the chillwave movement of summer 2009.
Bundick was born on November 7, 1986 in Columbia, South Carolina and attended Ridgeview High School where he formed well-known Columbia indie rock band, The Heist and the Accomplice, with three schoolmates.
Bundick graduated from the University of South Carolina in spring of 2009 with a bachelor's degree in graphic design. Late in his school career, Bundick formed a close musical relationship with fellow chillwave luminary Ernest Greene who plays under the name Washed Out.
He has since been signed to Car Park records, whoro Y Moi)

El Guincho is the recording alias of Spanish musician Pablo Díaz-Reixa. Also a member of Coconot, Díaz-Reixa rose to prominence with his 2008 album, Alegranza!. His musical style, influenced by a broad range of artists like Animal Collective and Os Mutantes, relies heavily on the use of sampling and incorporates elements of Afrobeat, dub, Tropicália and rock and roll as Díaz-Reixa achieves what he's described as a kind of "space-age exotica". He utilizes a Roland SP-404. He is also known as El Guincho de Tortilla de pico de gallo. He is touring Australia in February as part of the St Jerome's Laneway Festival.(Wikipedia El Guincho)

NEW EL GUINCHO - "ANTILLAS (XXXCHANGE REMIX)"
When we first heard onetime BTW Pablo Díaz-Reixa, aka El Guincho, we were drawn in by "Antillas," a song we described as "a five-minute bundle of clattering loops and sunny harmonies." It was from the self-released Alegranza!, before he'd signed to XL, who reissued the collection. Almost two years after being hooked we have an "Antillas" remix by XXXchange. It shows up on one of two double 12"s that feature remixes of the track by the likes of Architecture In Helsinki, Prins Thomas, Banana Clipz, etc. (Mad Decent's releasing one, Young Turks the other.) It's nice being reintroduced to the song, especially as we inch closer to winter. In this take, you'll here the original's loops buried beneath, and weaving through, a slew of new sounds.

The beat generation scene is on fire worldwide, with artists smashing the boundaries of connections between electronic music and hip hop, taking what they know and creating something new. “With every record I have listened to I inhaled a piece of the world,” says Movahedi. “I come from a musical background that is heavily influenced by the jazz era of the late 1950s and 1960s. But a big part of my sound is sampling. Everything I record or produce eventually ends up in a sampler. As I see it the art of sampling comes close to a cloning process. So add my love for sampling with my love for old jazz records and the name The Clonious makes sense...I guess!” he adds.

The Clonious, Between the Dots(2009)
For my part, The Clonious came out of nowhere this year with his wonderful “Androit Adventures” EP including a collaboration with relatively newcomer, beatmaker/singer Muhsinah and producer/remixer Dorian Concept. “Between the Dots” is the answer to the “Androit Adventures” EP. From Vienna, Austria, home to like-minded producer Dorian Concept, The Clonious is making some serious moves with his two releases on Ubiquity. If I had to describe the sound, it fits somewhere between the futuristic soul of production trio Sa-Ra Creative Partners, the energetic, synth-noodling of Dorian Concept and the warm, layered, stuttering beats of Dimlite. The Clonious seems to be no stranger to the keys and horns, tracks like “If Joe Had The Power” bring out the musician over layered melodies and hip hop claps while a trumpet or sax ride out the beat creating some serious electronic funk. No joke. What’s really caught me off guard about many of the tracks on “Between the Dots” is not only the production but the live instrumentation. The fusing of jazz patterns over beats is nothing new. However, there seems to be some of that found throughout the release and it works out well. Both The Clonious and Dorian Concept work the keys on “Dataflow,” a jazz-influenced stepper, one of my favorites from the album. Other collaborations include Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow.

About A Dancing Beggar

MySpace A Dancing Beggars The Story...

A Dancing Beggar is the musical project of 21-year-old musician, James Simmons. Having played a mixture of drums and guitar in previous bands, a solo project seemed the next step in achieving other creative goals. Using just a laptop, a couple of guitars and a cheap microphone, everything is written, recorded, mixed and produced in his bedroom.

Influenced by seminal post-rock artists like Maps, Sigur Ros, Amusement Parks On Fire, and Epic45, A Dancing Beggar began in summer 2007. After the purchase of some recording equipment a number of songs were written, recorded and distributed across MySpace. It wasn’t until early 2008 that a collection of songs seemed to link together for a possible release. These were recorded and subsequently turned into the 5 track EP 'How They Grow' which has been described by The Stool Pigeon as a 'post rock treat'. In late 2008 the entire EP was re-mixed, and on the 23rd February 2009 Grand Independent released ‘How They Grow’, as a 6 track EP on iTunes. ‘How They Grow’ takes elements of post-rock and shoegaze and has been compared to the sounds of Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, Ulrich Schnauss and July Skies.

As of March 2009, work had begun on new songs for A Dancing Beggar’s eagerly anticipated full-length album, ‘What We Left Behind’. These songs are more acoustic based, less distorted and euphoric with emphasis on a more organic sound. Composed and mixed by James, all eleven tracks were recorded in James’ bedroom again using an acoustic and electric guitar, microphone and laptop, between November 2008 and June 2009. This time incorporating field recordings by artists Peter Caeldries, Adam Danz and Cynthia Lawson, samples of which can be heard on ‘Our Distant Memories’, ‘Skinny Trees’ and ‘Branches and Nettles’. Notably an extract of ‘Day 16 - Recall Your Favorite Childhood Memory’ by Cynthia Lawson, a story about how she nearly jumped into a swimming pool with no water in it when she was very young. Such samples only compliment the ethereal sounds of ‘What We Left Behind’, marking a turning point in the maturity of A Dancing Beggar’s music which in most parts navigates around the concept of nostalgia.

Lo-Fi perfection of souring grandeur
Post-rock gets a bit of a hard deal sometimes. It is not all pony tails, smoke machines and eight minute songs. For those whom the genre is their bread and butter the intricacies of a ‘Mogwai’ movement compared to the exhausting exultations of an ‘Explosions in the Sky’ concoction make up the back drop of a genre that is experimental in its essence and a fully blown sonic war at its peak.

‘A Dancing Beggar’ can play devils advocate here as their style perfectly fits between both stylistics and plays along beautifully by bringing a different slant to the party. Their tone is rustic and simplistic but the production is lush and lavish enough to capture a band with some real quality. ‘Sand Between Our Toes’ plays on that fantasy with poise and perfectly captures feeling as well as sentiment. The albums soundscapes conquer over your senses and the sonic artistry on show is delightfully playful and consistently intricate and intriguing. ‘A Dancing Beggar’ is the one man product of the Brighton based musician James Simmons. Staggering, truly staggering. (Discogs Album Review here)

New Video : Animal Collective : In The Flowers
Animal Collective released a new, drug-addled video for In The Flowers this week. The visual interpretation has been met with mixed reviews, but there is no doubting the excellence of the track itself.
Animal Collective will digitally release their Fall Be Kind EP on November 23rd. Will a physical CD and 12" release on December 15th via Domino.

In The Flowers

A dancer who was high in a field from a moment
Caught my breath on my way home
Couldn't stop that spinning force
I fell into you
Everything drowns you to giggle
You are up with the flower and I care

So the dancer who gets wild to the deep reveling rhythm
But I am always away for weeks
That pass slow like mind gets lost
Feeling envy for the kid who danced inspite of anything
And we're out in the flowers and feel better

If I could just leave my body for the night

Then we could be dancing no more missing you while I am gone
Then we could be dancing and you'd smile and say I like this song
And then ours would meet them we will recognize nothing's wrong
And I wouldn't feel so selfish I won't be this way very long

To hold you in time
To hold you in time
To hold you in time
To hold you in time

And we're dancing, early hours drunken days finally ended
And the streets turn for pillowcase
And I fumble all good lie
Then the ecstasy turns writhing light through our windowpane
Now I am gone, I left flowers for you there

TEMPORARY RESIDENCE LIMITED
NEWS: NOVEMBER 2009

DEBUT ALBUM BY SYSTEMS OFFICER AVAILABLE NOW!!!
Five long years since the all-too-brief debut EP, Armistead Burwell Smith IV (he of Pinback and Three Mile Pilot infamy) finally unveils his long-awaited debut full-length of complex, gorgeous pop. And don't forget to catch Pinback on tour this month before they retreat to the studio to work on their long-awaited new album!

trr160.jpg
UNDERSLEPT

Systems Officer is the solo guise of Armistead Burwell Smith IV, the prolific multi-instrumentalist songwriter and founding member of Pinback and Three Mile Pilot. Written and recorded between breaks in the rigorous Pinback recording and touring schedule, Underslept is five years in the making, a concise collection of thoughtful, complex pop songs. Written, produced and performed by Smith in his home studio, Underslept features the same kind of intricate arrangements and layered vocal harmonies that have become a trademark of Pinback, with nods to the dramatic tone that marks the best Three Mile Pilot songs. Underslept gives Smith - already one of rock's most innovative and influential bass players - the opportunity to place his often understated gifts as a singer and songwriter front and center, drawing influence from The Police, Peter Gabriel-era Genesis and The Beach Boys to craft thoughtful, progressive pop with spiky hooks and impressively high replay value.

Armistead Burwell Smith IV
Armistead Burwell Smith IV (also known as Zach Smith) is an American singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He plays Alembic Stanley Clarke piccolo basses, which are tuned an octave higher than normal basses.(Wikipedia Armistead Burwell Smith IV)

Three Mile Pilot
Three Mile Pilot Official Site here
Born in San Diego, California, he first came to attention as the bass guitarist for rock band Three Mile Pilot. Smith's distinctive playing style and complex fretwork technique defines the overall sound of the band. This was clear as early as their first record Nà Vuccà Dò Lupù, on which Smith's bass was the only harmony instrument. Rumored attempts to change Three Mile Pilot's sound during the band's short tenure with major label Geffen Records persuaded Smith to separate from the band (and the label) and form Pinback with Rob Crow. Three Mile Pilot recently reformed and is working on a new effort to be released in 2009.

Pinback
Pinback Official Site here
Pinback is a music project formed and headed by Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow. Smith and Crow played music together as early as their days as roommates. Smith's break from Three Mile Pilot served as a good opportunity for the two to collaborate. The band's original recordings, that later became their first album This is a Pinback CD, were recorded on Smith's personal computer.

Systems Officer
Systems Officer Official Site here
Zach Smith also has a solo project called Systems Officer that allows him "to follow through completely his own ideas and concepts" and "to explore the workings of his inner mind and let his ingeniousness flourish". Smith's own sound shines in this project, something not entirely possible in his other bands. That said, listeners will find this sound fairly similar to his work with Pinback. On May 11, 2004 Zach released a self-titled EP from this project on Ace Fu Records and is working on a full length album to be released in 2009.

Signature Sound
"When called upon to define [his] style, Smith demurs before answering. "I don't know. Pretty with an edge? I don't necessarily know how to explain it. I like dark and brooding tones. I don't ever want my music to get too pretty. I like it to have an underlying rawness. Sugar coating on the top, evil underneath. How's that?" "

Singing and songwriting style
Shiina is an accomplished musician and songwriter who writes music spanning numerous genres. She is well known for her eccentricity, rolling her "r"s and creating promotional music videos with striking visuals.
She admired Eddi Reader’s voice, but she felt that she didn't have the clear voice like Eddi and sounded hoarse. She had an inferiority complex in her husky voice since childhood. Then, she actually referred to Janis Ian's singing and made also "Seventeen" influenced by Ian's "At Seventeen". She later covered "Love Is Blind".
She listens to many genres of music. At the time of her debut, there were about 10 pages of lists which her favorite musicians' names were closely written in. They were various with classical music, the Japan and U.S. standard number in the 50's-60's, contemporary rock, and the local band of Fukuoka.
She can play various musical instruments. She mainly plays rhythm guitar, but she plays other musical instruments. In live music, she sometimes plays the piano and plays the bass guitar rarely. In recording, she sometimes plays a piano and a drum, and rarely plays uncommon musical instruments, such as a melodica and a samisen.
Shiina's lyrics often contain complex and archaic language. Printed lyrics in her liner notes regularly feature kanji that are not in common use.
Musically, Shiina's songwriting style steadily became more complex over the course of her solo career, incorporating more varied instruments and more elaborate production with each album. Although Shiina's influence in songwriting is still dominant in Tokyo Jihen, arrangements have been stripped down to a more standard rock and roll style, highlighting the roles of the individual players in the band.(Wikipedia Ringo Shiina)

Camille++12.jpg

Camille Dalmais, better known as Camille (born in 1978 in Paris, France), is a French singer, songwriter and occasional actress.

Camille Dalmais, a one time political science student, whose first album, Le Sac Des Filles, was released in 2002.
Then, she was part of Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague project, which consists of old new-wave songs transformed into bossa nova.
In 2005, Camille released Le fil.
This is a concept album, built on one note (a “B”) that starts at the beginning of the album and stops at its end.
All the songs of the album are constructed on the voice of Camille with only one instrument (double-bass, and sometimes a keyboard).
With her sweet voice and her personal vision of music and writing, Camille enjoyed real success in France, where she won two awards at the 2006 Victoires de la Musique for Le fil, one for best album and one for best tour.
Camille’s third studio album Music Hole, released in March 2008, shows a key turn in her career: it is mostly sung in English.
“In Music Hole, I tried to mix the story-telling, “chansons” feel from musicals with something more tribal: body percussions, minimalist trance, sub bass and throat singing” says Camille.
Music Hole is co-produced by Camille and MaJiKer.
It features collaborations with the body percussion masters from the Brazilian band Barbatuques, Jamie Cullum on piano percussions and beatbox by Sly Johnson.
Camille won the award for Best Female Vocalist at the 2009 Victoires de la Musique.(last.fm Camille Biography)

Kevin Brereton (born February 20, 1972) better known by his stage name k-os, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer. His given name may also be cited as Kheaven, a spelling he later adopted.
The alias "k-os" (spelled with a lower case "k"), is pronounced "chaos" and is an acronym for "Knowledge of Self," although in a later interview he also said that it used to stand for "Kheaven's Original Sound." His music incorporates a wide variety of music genres including rap, funk, rock, and reggae. The lyrics frequently focus on promoting a "positive message" while at times expressing criticism of mainstream hip hop culture's obsession with money, fame and glorification of violence.A musician as well as a producer, k-os has written and produced nearly every part of all four of his albums. k-os usually performs with a live band, something that is uncommon in the hip hop genre. He sometimes plays guitar and keyboard both during live performances and in the studio.
k-os received his first musical exposure with the single "Musical Essence", released in 1994. After the release of his second single "Rise Like The Sun" in 1996 he withdrew from the industry because he was dissatisfied with his musical style. He reappeared briefly in 1999 and released his debut album Exit in 2002. The album received positive reviews but sold relatively few copies. He released his second album Joyful Rebellion in 2004, which received platinum status in Canada. Joyful Rebellion received positive reviews, and Atlantis: Hymns for Disco, was released in 2006. His most recent album, Yes!, was released in 2009.(Wikipedia K-OS)

Album Review: k-os – Yes! (2009) here
Yes!, indeed. This Canadian emcee-singer-producer cannot release a new record without generating some sort of buzz in whatever circle you want to label his fanbase. k-os shatters boundaries both with his music and those who bump his feel-good anthems. Since debuting in 2002 with Exit, he has steadily crossed and infused genres with success. From acoustic folk to soul to, of course, hip-hop, k-os doesn’t let expectations hold him back. And he continues with the hits and experimentation on Yes!, his fourth album that is every bit as cohesive as it is varied.

Perhaps this album’s most interesting element is it is such a turn from his last effort, the fun and emotional Atlantis: Hymns for Disco. And that concept is heard instantly during “Zambony” as a movie sample plays. You hear a woman shouting, “Nobody knows what you’re doing!” as a man responds, “That’s exactly the way I like it.” Unlike what you heard on Atlantis with instantly gratifying hits “Sunday Morning” and “Born to Run”, Yes! is more of a grower. Sure, “4 3 2 1” is a startlingly catchy pop number that will have you tapping and singing right along with k-os. But outside of that, and maybe “Uptown Girl”, the tracks take time to build. Once they get inside your head, though, there is little to no turning back. Yet, at the same time, it’s such a solid album that you could just play it in the background, bounce to a few joints, and go along with your day. Or you can sit and focus as time flies by. Either way, you are left feeling satisfied with some room left for another spin.

It’s difficult and seemingly blasphemous to k-os’s work to just point out three or four of this album’s best cuts. The primary reason for that is each track seems to take on its own life while also fitting in with one another. It might seem pretentious, but it’s actually more of a testament to his songwriting ability. From start to finish, there is nary a weak link in the k-os chain. You have the humble opener “Zambony”, on which he jumps from one topic to the next over 808s, a choral loop, guitar and strings. Then there is the hypnotizing “Uptown Girl” and its swirling guitar lick. And how about the aptly-titled, two-tracks-in-one “FUN!”? Driven by a heavy guitar riff, synthesizers, and a slick in-stereo beat, k-os first injects hints of bitterness into the otherwise upbeat joint before he embraces how hip-hop brings us together. It then transforms into a futuristic R&B track in the blink of an eye.

As stated earlier, don’t be surprised if you spin this record several times in a row after your first listen. But doesn’t that seem to be the case with every k-os album? Yes!, it does. And with this, he has now solidified himself as one of music’s most consistent artists.

The Brunettes are an indie pop or twee pop group from New Zealand formed in 1998. The band consists of core members Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield with additional contributions from part-time band members including James Milne (of The Reduction Agents), Ryan McPhun (of Ryan McPhun and the Ruby Suns and The Reduction Agents), Harry Cundy, and most recently, Andrew Thompson.
In 2008, The Brunettes covered The Cure's "Lovesong" for American Laundromat Records tribute compilation "Just Like Heaven - a tribute to The Cure". The Wedding Present, Joy Zipper, The Submarines, and The Rosebuds also contributed tracks to the project.(Wikipedia The Brunettes)

Paper Dolls EP (Oct.2009)

The Brunettes have always been meticulous about their craft in the studio. Writing pop songs, that most fickle of forms, requires a precision that comes naturally, making their records ring perfection in every note. See: the 60’s-meets-80’s psych-pop bliss of early favorite “The Moon in June Stuff”; the hyper-aware boy/girl vocals of “Loopy Loopy Love”; the next-level grandiose celebration that is “B-A-B-Y (Brunettes Against Bubblegum Youth)”. Each is a testament to just how much joy can be squeezed within the confines of a pop song.

Sense of fun firmly intact with new record Paper Dolls, The Brunettes have managed to build on previous work without sacrificing the aesthetic that has gained such wide-spread acclaim, instead injecting their new batch of songs with a sense of modernity. Opener “In Colours” and closer “Thank You” are entrance and exit into this world, as both sit comfortably with previous efforts; in between, however, principle songwriter Jonathan Bree has augmented his pop leanings with drum machines and an intimidatingly wide array of synths to fantastic effect.

Lyrically, the album combines clever call-and-response levity, an undercurrent of smoldering romance, and a penchant for idiosyncratic storytelling. All are on display in lead single “Red Rollerskates”, which finds Jonathan and (Brunettes co-lead vocalist/instrumentalist) Heather Mansfield solving their relatively ordinary problem (Jonathan walks too fast for his asthmatic girlfriend) with a quirky but playful solution (buying her a pair of red rollerskates and pulling her around with a rope). On “The Crime Machine”, Heather longs to live as a 1920’s Queen-pin, “Bedroom Disco” (fast becoming a live favorite) lives up to it’s title as a stay-at-home party song, and the title track combines surreal lyrics about a stationary fetish with (good) Bond-movie string arrangements and guitar tremolo.
A short and concise 35 minutes, Paper Dolls reaffirms the glory of a simple melody. “Thank you for the time,” Heather sings to close out the record. So polite, those New Zealanders.

Pitchfork:Interviews here
Creating a film adaptation of a beloved work of literature is difficult enough with a novel, even a novella or short story. But how about a 10-line children's book? Spike Jonze took on that challenge in his long battle to bring Maurice Sendak's classic Where the Wild Things Are to the screen. With Sendak's encouragement, Jonze began work on the film in the early part of this decade, with the project then attached to Universal. Many years later, the film-- eventually scripted by Jonze and author/publisher Dave Eggers-- is finally being released in the U.S. via Warner Bros. on October 16.

Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are is not a children's film, which is to say it's not pandering, or cute, or repetitive, or simplistic. This is instead an art film about childhood, about the feelings and fears and needs of being young. In Jonze's hands, the film's young protagonist, Max, is the product of a broken home, with an overstretched mother, an older sister who has her own life, and a social structure that doesn't include him. These evocative early passages hint at the restlessness, the playfulness, the fright, and the untethered anger of being a child-- the needs for safety, belonging, and community, and the consequences of not getting them.

CAMERA OBSCURA - Unveil video to their new single, 'The Sweetest Thing'
12 October 09

CAFollowing the previous news that Camera Obscura will release 'The Sweetest Thing' on November 2, Pitchfork this morning premiered the video to the forthcoming single here. Taken from the Glaswegians' My Maudlin Career (available here), the single will also feature a version of Bruce Springsteen's Tougher Than The Rest on the reverse of the 7".
The band sent out the following message to their mailing list regarding the video and their upcoming dates:
"Hello,
This is your unmissable Camera Obscura news update for the month of October 2009.
We are most pleased to present to you first the new video for our next single, 'The Sweetest Thing' (out on 7" on November 2nd with the b-side being our interpretation of 'Tougher Than The Rest' by The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen). It was shot by our friend Blair Young and we had a lot of fun making it at the end of a long summer of festivals and mini tours. By squinting your eyes just a little, you can watch us transform into uncannily authentic clones of some of our 70s heroes. Fifty Ways To Leave Your Dignity...! You can view here.
Also don't forget that we're on tour at the moment. Thank you to everyone who has made the time to come and see us play so far. It's been a lot of fun. Tonight is our last show in Germany during our charge through continental Europe. Please see all our latest shows listed below...Those in Mainland Europe, UK, USA and beyond (in that order) - we are headed your way.
Thanks for your support, as ever.
The Band."
