Cate Le Bon is a singer-songwriter from Cardiff, Wales, who sings in both English and Welsh.
She first gained public attention when she supported Gruff Rhys (of the Super Furry Animals) on his 2007 solo UK tour. She has since played Glastonbury, Latitude and the Green Man Festival. She appeared as a guest vocalist on Neon Neon’s 2008 single "I Lust U" (from their album Stainless Style).(Wikipedia Cate Le Bon)

Career
Her first official release was a Welsh-language EP, Edrych yn Llygaid Ceffyl Benthyg, on Peski Records in 2008. She also released the double A-side debut single "No One Can Drag Me Down / Disappear" (described by Gruff Rhys as “Bobbie Gentry and Nico fight over a Casio keyboard; melody wins!”) on her website. Le Bon worked alongside Gorky's Zygotic Mynci’s Megan Childs, who contributed violin, and Super Furry Animals and Thrills collaborator John Thomas, who added pedal steel.
In 2009 she announced that her debut album (previously known by the working title Pet Deaths) will be titled Me Oh My, and released the title track on her Myspace page. The album will not feature the previous single "No One Can Drag Me Down / Disappear".

Style
Le Bon is most singled out by critics for her dark lyrical content, and her "haunting voice." Le Bon claims that "Early experiences with a string of pet deaths had a profound lasting effect on me," and inform her self-admitted "abnormal fixation with death."

EINSTEIN MUSIC JOURNAL here
Ever since St. Vincent checked in with her brilliant debut album Marry Me in 2007 I’ve been on the look out for a female songwriter burning the same desirable flame. Finally I’ve found her; she is Welsh musician Cate Le Bon and her debut album Me Oh My is the first album from a female solo artist to really excite me since St. Vincent grabbed my attention three years ago.

Known already for her role with Neon Neon (she guest appeared on vocals in the song ‘I Lust U’), Cate Le Bon has used her relationship with Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon) to turn herself into a modern day pop star. Rhys runs a record label (Irony Bored) somewhat dedicated to her brilliance and he has already been rewarded, with Le Bon receiving extensive praise across the world.

An instant attraction to Le Bon’s music comes via her sultry voice, which is dainty and perfectly in sync with her byronic narration. Comparable to the likes of Lissy Trullie and Annie Clark, she sings with a wavy love bird-like mystic and has the unique ability to adjust between high and low frequencies with relative ease. However the real beauty that makes Le Bon’s music stand out is her chiseled instrumental arrangements which contain an unusual aggression, often sounding coarse and abrasive but never becoming overly offensive. They often reach breaking point but never snap, producing the type of tension normally associated with synth based noise music.

Cate Le Bon’s debut album Me Oh My is out now through Irony Bored Records. It can be purchased from Rough Trade’s online shop.

Wikipedia Hebden Kieran
Kieran Hebden (born 1977 in Putney, London, England, United Kingdom) is a post-rock and electronic musician. Hebden first came to prominence as a member of the band Fridge before establishing himself as a solo artist under the moniker of Four Tet.
Hebden's music typically eschews the traditional pop song format in favor of a more abstract approach―his sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation.
Alongside recording his own material, Hebden has also performed remixes for a number of artists including Aphex Twin, Anti-Pop Consortium, Bonobo, Beth Orton, Explosions in the Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Matthew Dear, Sia, Nathan Fake, Bloc Party, Andrew Bird, Kings of Convenience, Battles, Madvillain, and Black Sabbath. Hebden's recent output includes a number of improvisational works with veteran jazz drummer Steve Reid, and a collaboration with Burial.

NEW FOUR TET - "LOVE CRY"
For "Love Cry," Kieran Hebden gives us a percussive nine minute forward-thrusting dance track piloted by ghostly crate-digger female vocals and enough bass to earn its title (a title that's repeated endlessly throughout and sometimes sounds like "buff bride"). The song cycles through a rainbow of moody electronic sounds, too, hence the muted color wheel art. You'll find "Love Cry" on a limited-edition 12" backed by "Our Bells" out 11/2 via Domino, but can listen now at MySpace.

Florence and the Machine is an alternative rock band. It is the recording name of Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her voice. Musically Florence and the Machine's sound is generally referred to as soul-inspired indie. Florence and The Machine's music has received praise across the British music media, especially from the BBC who played a large part in Florence and The Machine's rise to prominence by promoting her as part of BBC Introducing. This led to her playing a number of music festivals in 2008, including Glastonbury as well as Reading and Leeds and T in the Park. The band's debut album, Lungs was released on 6 July 2009, and was at the number 2 position for its first five weeks in the charts, behind Michael Jackson.(Wikipedia Florence&The Machine)

Florence-+-the-Machine-Lungs.jpg
Lungs 2009 (Universal Republic)

Lungs (2009)
Much of the material on the album was written as reaction to what turned out to be a temporary break-up with Welch's current boyfriend. Welch says "He prefers me not to talk about it. It's funny then singing about it."
The debut single was "Kiss with a Fist". The song was used in the soundtrack of the film Jennifer's Body. The follow-up single "Dog Days are Over" was recorded with no instruments in a studio the "size of a loo". The next singles were "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)" and then "Drumming Song". Recently Florence and the Machine filmed a video for her cover of Candi Staton's "You Got The Love". In a recent interview with Dermot O'Leary, Welch said that hopefully "Cosmic Love" will be another single.

NEW FLORENCE & THE MACHINE VIDEO - "YOU'VE GOT THE LOVE (THE XX REMIX)" stereogum here
As dime-a-dozen blog bait, remixes don't usually merit official videos. But most remixes aren't this officially excellent, so let's all try to calm down and enjoy this clip! Florence & The Machine covered Source And Candi Station's "You've Got The Love" on her Lungs LP, and has frequently shared bills with London's CMJ-ubiquitous the xx; when they were wrapping up their last tour together, they released this souvenir, which has Romy and Jamie providing de novo vocalizations over snippets of Florence's harp and melisma set to warped dubstep, keyboard, and computer bits. It is very good and will make for a surprisingly perfect soundtrack to your next Studio 54 theme party. You know that is true because it is a surprisingly perfect soundtrack to this video, which is basically a Studio 54 theme party. Designer drugs for all.

Js Music Low Motion Disco here

rax_on.gif
Musically speaking, the content of the group's debut album is being compared to Lindstrom & Prins Thomas' work on Eskimo. But where the Norwegian space disco kings are boringly self-indulgent at times, Low Motion Disco keep everything placidly immediate. 'Intro,' for instance, is an obvious homage to The KLF’s seminal Chill Out, sheep noises and all, while 'Things Are Gonna Get Easier' is so lightheartedly MOR it wouldn’t sound out of place on Barbara Streisand & Barry Gibb's 1980 collaboration, Guilty. (That’s a good thing, by the way.) There are even hints of Cocteau Twins-like aerial guitar play on 'Love Knows Low,' which shows the duo’s varied influences and overall dedication to all things shoegaze. Only on 'People Come in Slowly' do LMD dare to increase―albeit very discreetly, mind you―the cadence, and this rare threat is the album’s stellar moment.

Considering the absence of one actual bona fide anthem and tracks that verge on the side of irritatingly lethargic ('The Low Murderer Is Out at Night'), Keep It Slow can’t really be considered the sub-sub-genre’s definitive album. In the meantime, Low Motion Disco’s pastoral noises, pulsating humming, dub-ish ambiences, and breezy samples should appeal to everyone that’d like their Hercules & Love Affair less flaming and their Pop Ambient more visceral.

"Things Are Gonna Get Easier"
10069516024_s.jpg

The Five Stairsteps' "O-o-h Child" is an old song about future days. Low Motion Disco's red-cheeked edit, "Things Are Gonna Get Easier", is instead a perfect soundtrack for our idealized present, at a time when hope actually seems totally natural. Revisit your pre-election, bailout-weighted October headspace, however, and remind yourself how absolutely necessary this song was in 2008. It's such an easy high that you wonder if the sort of margarine-spread treatment that LMD employ couldn't be used on every classic soul song. Go ahead: spend winter 2009 dreaming on a 17-minute ambient version of "I Call It Pretty Music But the Old People Call It the Blues". --Andrew Gaerig

Marlone is the second album release from the oddly monikered duo To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie. They are a pop band of sorts, in that their songs can worm their way into your head and not leave, but they are certainly not a group to be lumped in with the top 40 prattle that dominates the airwaves nor the mediocrity that smothers the interwebs.

Quite different from their other releases, Marlone is a more organic and open work, allowing breathing space for the songs to unfold and evolve; witness the slow, sinister burn of both "Villain" and "Turritopsis." And in quite a change of pace for the group, they even deliver a straight ahead pop song with the brisk romp of "In People's Homes."

What they assuredly are is a group that continually explores the union of the light and the dark, the sweetness of the female voice set against the salty backing tracks, always searching for the fine balance between the calming and the equilibrium challenging.

To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie consists of Jehna Wilhelm and Mark McGee, with various collaborators in both the studio and live settings. Marlone was born from a collection of songs written on tour and during live performances, with additional material taking form in the recording sessions and later in mixing. The album was recorded at the Sound Gallery in Minneapolis, MN.

Loretta Lynn

Loretta+Lynn.jpg

Loretta Lynn (born Loretta Webb on April 14, 1935) is an American country music singer-songwriter; she was one of the leading country vocalists and songwriters during the 1960s and is revered as a country music cultural icon.
Lynn ruled the charts during the '60s and '70s, racking up over 70 hits as a solo artist and a duet partner.
With an impoverished upbringing, a troubled yet devoted marriage, chronic illness and exhaustion due to her hectic pace, and several tragedies through the years, Lynn's own life often provided the grist for her popular tunes. Her best-selling 1976 autobiography, Coal Miner's Daughter, was made into a hit Academy Award-winning film starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones in 1980.
Although she was out of the loop for a few years while taking care of her husband, who died in 1996, Lynn returned to touring in 1998. In 2000, she released her first album since 1988 to contain original solo material.Including solo and duet work, Loretta Lynn has acquired sixteen number one country hits over the course of her career.(Wikipedia Loretta Lynn)

1990 – present: Later music career
In 2004, Lynn made a comeback with the highly successful album Van Lear Rose, the second album on which Lynn either wrote or co-wrote every song. The album was produced by her "friend forever" Jack White of The White Stripes, and featured guitar work and backup vocals by White. Her collaboration with White allowed Lynn to reach new audiences and generations, even garnering high praise in magazines that specialize in mainstream and alternative rock music, such as Spin and Blender.
Rolling Stone voted the album the second best of the year for 2004. (White has long been an admirer of Lynn and claims she is his favorite singer. He has covered several songs of hers, including the controversial "Rated X.")
Loretta Lynn is working on the follow-up to 2004's Van Lear Rose, plus a new CD of re-recorded versions of her greatest hits over the past 40 years. Both CDs are set for release in 2009.

Van Lear Rose(2004)
Van Lear Rose is a Grammy Award-winning album by Loretta Lynn, released in 2004 and produced by Jack White of the rock band The White Stripes. The album was initially intended as a musical experiment, blending the styles of country singer-songwriter Lynn and producer White, who wrote one track, sings a duet with Lynn, and performs on the whole album as a musician. At the time of the album's release, Lynn was 69 and White was 28.
The title refers to Lynn's origins as the daughter of a miner working the Van Lear coal mines. The album peaked at number two on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and at number 24 on the Billboard 200, the most successful crossover music album of Lynn's 45-year career.
At the Grammy Awards of 2005, Lynn was nominated for 5 awards and won 2: Best Country Album and Best Country Collaboration with Vocals for her duet with White, "Portland, Oregon". Two of her other nominations were for Best Country Song: "Portland, Oregon" and "Miss Being Mrs." "Miss Being Mrs." was also nominated for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
The song Portland, Oregon was listed as the 305th best song of the 2000's by pitchfork media.

album review here
On her new album, Van Lear Rose, producer and admirer Jack White (who dedicated White Blood Cells to Lynn in 2001) immediately erases that friction with a rawer, in-one-take live sound that adds texture to her songs without overpowering her voice. White's intention isn't to update or revise Lynn's music or her persona, but simply to recast her voice in a new setting, to make her sound like she's right back in Butcher Hollow.

To this end, White has corralled a backing band that consists not of Nashville veterans, but of young 'uns from the decidedly non-rural locales of Detroit and Cincinnati. Dubbed the Do Whaters by Lynn ("I named them that because they got in there and did whatever we needed them to!" she explains in the liner notes), the group consists of The Greenhornes' rhythm section Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler, with Blanche's Dave Feeny adding elegant pedal steel and slide guitar flourishes. Together, they prove a dynamic backing band, able to set a warm country atmosphere but not afraid to make some rock noise.

And they do just that on the first single, "Portland, Oregon". Lynn and White exchange verses about sloe gin fizzes and drunk lovin', recalling her adultery duets with Conway Twitty but with more of a boisterous sound, courtesy of White's Zep blues riffs. On "Mrs. Leroy Brown", the band bang out a bar-stormer to match Lynn's adventures riding around town in a pink limousine. Even bigger than that limo, though, is the unmistakable smile on her face as she disses her man and his floozy: "I just drawed all your money out of the bank today/ Honey, you don't have no mo'."

Pitchfork:Charlotte Gainsbourg "IRM" here

I have yet to travel through an MRI-- aka imagerie par résonance magnétique-- but there's apparently more to the tube trip than simply (?) aligning the nuclear magnetization of your body's hydrogen atoms. It's kinda noisy in there, too. For most, the attendant clicks and whirls are an annoyance. But for Charlotte Gainsbourg-- who underwent several MRIs after suffering a brain hemorrhage due to a water-skiing accident a couple years back-- the nagging machinery sounded like "great music." So on the title track from her forthcoming LP, we get a ramshackle beat that's part medical musique concrète and part psychedelic mind meld. It could be the least sexy thing this second-generation provocateur has ever done, but that's OK-- unlike much of her Air-assisted 2006 album, 5:55, this is a Charlotte song more than a Gainsbourg song.

It's also a something of a Beck song-- the revitalized jack-of-all wrote the music, co-wrote the lyrics, and produced Charlotte's new album. And, musically, "IRM" is an extension of the echoing, dark nostalgia that permeated his 2008 Danger Mouse collaboration Modern Guilt. But whereas Beck might be inclined to skeptically view an MRI as another symbol of man's vain attempt to overcome nature, Gainsbourg is enamored by the magic magnétique. "This [song] has nothing to do with melancholy," she explained in a behind-the-scenes video, and her nearly-rapped verses behold the glistening white tube with awed wonder; "can you see a memory?" and "register all my fear" and "tell me where the trauma lies," she requests, as if peering into an all-powerful oracle. Then the track unspools into a strobing vacuum where hemorrhages fix themselves somewhere between the details.

This is all just so Sufjan Stevens. Tired of talking up his plan to write a concept album for each of America's 50 states, our man with the banjo put a small orchestra together to accompany some Super-8 footage of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

And, in its own strange orchestral way, the music stands on its own (though it's also available with an accompanying DVD). Essentially, it sounds like Illinois, but without the singing. Which is no bad thing. Is Stevens the alt.Gershwin? The evidence in favour is mounting.

The Keeper Of The Library [Lacies, 2009]

The Music Lobby here
At first, I was a bit surprised at the intricate production behind the album, but once I realized who was behind it, I had that sigh of relief that comes with familiarity of the sound. The Archivist is Craig Tattersall, who has releases as The Boats, The Sea, Famous Boyfriend and The Remote Viewer. As the alias and the title hints, the recordings on the album are compiled from an extensive archive of Tattersall's unreleased material. Some pieces have been scraped from crackling hard drives and hissing cassette tapes, accumulating to over 45 minutes in length. The first lucky 150 collectors were able to secure an additional 3" CDr that came within the handmade package. And the music... well, it speaks for itself. Tattersall uses lo-fi processed scratches and airy filtered percussion which he turns into beats with sparse melodies. Simplicity and elegance are at the core of this recording bringing lightweight electronica back to the home listening experience. Relying on repetition, the tracks roll over in beat with my morning train, glitching on chords, micro programmed rhythms and gentle strums of guitars. Using a coarse brush, the sounds are blotted around the audio canvas with plenty of space in between, leaving just enough room for the mind to rest, and fill in the gaps. This destitute pattern creates music full of fragile memories, elaborate design, and delicate beauty.

Bride of No No was a theatrical noise rock quartet formed in spring 1999 by Chicagoan Azita Youssefi. After her influential Scissor Girls project fizzled out, Youssefi formed Bride of No No with J Graff, MV Carbon, and J Kienzier. Their names may have been fabricated; it was all part of the show, as BONN also performed in floor-length, burka-inspired shrouds that left only their eyes visible. Since the Scissor Girls had made Youssefi a bit of a star in the underground music community, the mystery surrounding her new project was in part designed to present the quartet as equals, unmarred by preconceived notions of reputation or gender. Atavistic issued the debut Bride of No No release in early 2001. B.O.N.N. Apetit!'s discordant anti-melodies and claustrophobic vibe were a critical success, and the band performed at the Los Angeles installment of the artist-curated All Tomorrow's Parties music festival ( where Sonic Youth was host). However, by 2002, strife within the group was rampant, and by June of that year, Bride of No No was no more. The quartet had managed to record another album before its dissolution, however; the self-titled release appeared on Atavistic in June 2003. Youssefi went on to a solo career, and Drag City issued her debut, Enantidromia, in early 2003. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide (Atavistic World Wide here)

Azita currently performs solo under her own name.

Pitchfork album review here
As a Steely Dan fan, I found the past two Drag City albums by Chicago singer-songwriter Azita intriguing. Startling, too-- at least considering her background in the Fall-meets-Melt-Banana noise-punk group Scissor Girls and the no-wavey Bride of No No, who were about as far from the pristine smoothness of Aja as you could get. Unlikely as the source may have been, 2003's ballad-wracked Enantiodromia and the following year's marginally poppier Life on the Fly (which actually went so far as to mimic the cover-art aesthetic of Countdown to Ecstasy) were likeably skewed mutations of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's sardonic, piano-driven jazz-rock, right down to Azita's outsized caricature of the latter's hiccupy vocal tendencies.

But Azita Youseffi seems to have gotten most of the "Doctor Wu" out of her system for How Will You?, a more traditional (if subtly unnerving) take on cabaret-pop. It's harder to pinpoint a singular aesthetic here-- she's expanded the range of her voice, settling into a more comfortable and subtle series of melodies that still retains some of her unique character, and she's branched out into a broader array of musical styles that give her more room to stretch out her compositional artfulness. Ideally, this expanded palette would sound like a breakthrough for an artist once constrained by a more specific frame of reference, yet still retain fans who enjoy piano lounge music transformed into brooding strangeness.

The problem is that, musically, it's a bit too polite: the jazz-rock influence is still evident on "Things Gone Wrong", but it sounds a little mannered, more in the vein of Ben Folds Five's arch faux-cheeriness than the moody melancholy of her last two albums. "Scylla and Charybdis" boasts the most startling vocal performance on the record-- an aching, keening wail that evokes Debbie Harry undergoing a complete nervous breakdown-- but that vocal has to carry the entire song, since it's backed by a listlessly strummed acoustic guitar that might as well be an afterthought. And even with only nine songs on the album, she goes to the well more than once on one idea: The early 1970s post-Beatles mode of "I'm Happy"-- think Badfinger in their more downtempo moments-- is a compelling-enough opener, but then it's practically reprised, with only a couple of chord changes and some additional atmospherics, two tracks later on "Away".

The compelling moments are there if you're patient. "Come William" is a wintry, slow-build piece that pits a brisk, intense piano against an otherwise-elegaic arrangement, and the gradual shift in "Laughter Again" from lonely-sounding early Joni Mitchell balladry to vigorous alt-country-tinged guitar rock should make Neko Case fans happy. But most of the appeal to this album will be in Azita's voice and lyrics, which are accessibly versatile and somewhat impenetrable, respectively. It's saying a lot that she can make some of this stuff work; lines like "Hey you with the lightning eyes and the starry fate" ("Things Gone Wrong") and "Bonafide when the summer calls the tune/ In pale alabaster" ("Laughter Again") read a bit like bogus poetry without her alluringly sharp/sweet voice to back it up, and it's easy to drift away from listening to what she's singing in favor of the way she sings it. If this album evokes anything, lyrically or otherwise, it's the feelings that arise when love and ambivalence cross paths, maybe best personified in the last line of "Come William": "I don't want to mean or believe or seem anything/ Only want to carry along." Maybe that's why so much of How Will You? sounds only halfway captivating.

Atlas Sound (born in 1982 in Athens, Georgia) is the name of a musical solo project of Bradford James Cox, the lead singer of Atlanta four-piece Deerhunter.

Cox has released an album entitled Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel on indie-label Kranky to favorable reviews. In explaining his reasoning for a solo project, Cox has stated, "It's just that I have ideas that I can't make work with a five piece rock band...there's kind of this palette of sounds that I use that I don't necessarily get to use with Deerhunter". Cox has noted his heroes to be Ricky Wilson from The B-52's and Laura Carter from Athens punk band the Bar-B-Q Killers.

Beirut is an American band. It began as the solo musical project of 23-year-old Santa Fe, New Mexico native Zachary Francis Condon, and later evolved into a band led by Condon. Their first performances were in May 2006, to support the release of their debut album, Gulag Orkestar.
The music combines elements of Eastern European folk with Western pop music.(Wikipedia Beirut)

Beirut - 2.4.2009 at Music Hall of Williamsburg here

Bio
One of 2006's most unexpected indie success stories, Beirut combines a wide variety of styles, from pre-rock pop music and Eastern European Gypsy styles to the alternately plaintive and whimsical indie folk of the Decemberists to the lo-fi, homemade psychedelic experimentation of Neutral Milk Hotel. At the heart of this sonic hybrid was a teenager from Albuquerque, NM, a fact that made Beirut's debut album, Gulag Orkestar, all the more surprising. Something of a musical prodigy, multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon began making one-man D.I.Y. bedroom recordings in his early teens; while conducting interviews several years later, he claimed to have recorded an entire album of 1950s-style doo wop material and a collection of electronic pop songs inspired by the Magnetic Fields. (Indeed, Condon's dolorous vocal delivery and low, somewhat shaky pitch sound directly inspired by the Fields' Stephin Merritt.)

After dropping out of high school, Condon claims to have traveled through Europe at the age of 16, in the process becoming exposed to the Balkan folk and Gypsy music that's at the heart of Gulag Orkestar. Back home in Albuquerque, Condon crossed paths with fellow New Mexican Jeremy Barnes, formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel, whose own albums as A Hawk and a Hacksaw share similarly ethnographic interests with Condon's new material. With the help of Barnes and his A Hawk and a Hacksaw partner, Heather Trost, Condon recorded the songs that would make up Gulag Orkestar largely on his own, playing accordion, keyboards, saxophone, clarinet, mandolin, ukulele, horns, glockenspiel, and percussion along with Barnes' drums and Trost's cello and violin.

After Barnes gave an early version of the album to Ba Da Bing! Records label head Ben Goldberg, the newly christened band Beirut was signed to the New Jersey-based label and Condon moved from Albuquerque to Brooklyn, where he put together a floating collective of part-time bandmembers along the lines of Broken Social Scene for live performances. Following the release of Gulag Orkestar in May 2006, critical approbation quickly moved from the smallest blogs to mainstream media outlets that pegged Condon as a one-man cross between Jeff Mangum, Conor Oberst, and Sufjan Stevens. The EP Lon Gisland followed in 2007, leading up to the full-length The Flying Club Cup later that year. In 2009 Condon released the double EP March of the Zapotec/Holland. The latter featured six electronic tracks recorded at home under the pseudonym Realpeople, while the former included six tracks recorded in Oaxaca, Mexico with the Jimenez Band, a 19-piece group from Teotitln del Valle. - allmusic.com

Bombay Bicycle Club are a 4 piece british indie band formed in 2006 who hail from North London. They took their name from a local curry house in Wandsworth, but recently admitted that they dislike the moniker and feel unfortunate to be stuck with it.

Consisting of Jack Steadman (vocals, guitar, bass), Jamie MacColl (bass, guitar, vocals), Suren De Saram (drums) and Ed Nash (bass and keyboard) and otherwise known as the BBC, the band opened V Festival 2006 after winning the annual ‘Road to V’ competition and have also played Reading/Leeds Festival for the past 3 years running.(last.fm Bombay Bicyle Club biography)

The Independent Music Bombay Bicycle Club, Heaven, London here
A couple of years ago, Bombay Bicycle Club were at the forefront of the underage band scene, alongside their school peers Cajun Dance Party. Still just 19 years old – the band only finished their A-Levels last year – it's apparent tonight that while their devoted young fans who have grown up alongside them are still present, their audience has expanded to include all ages.

It's no surprise. The north London band boast a maturity in their performance and their sound which blends the lo-fi post-punk of Pavement and Sonic Youth and the catchy guitar riffs of The Strokes. Since they won a Channel 4 battle-of-the-bands competition in 2006, and played the V Festival that year, they have been steadily building their fanbase, and this summer they released their acclaimed debut album I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose.

It's live that their energy comes to the fore, due in part to their singer Jack Steadman's unfaltering passion. While his three bandmates thrash it out frenetically on guitars and drums, intensity and emotion bubble up through Steadman into constant smiles, flailing arms, and a quivering voice recalling Conor Oberst, with refreshingly youthful excitement rather than angsty despair. It must be a challenge not to smile, faced with a room packed full of fans loudly singing back your lyrics.

Although the band wear their indie rock and post-punk influences on their sleeves, it's their exuberant delivery, catchy hooks, danceable rhythms and constantly evolving time signatures that compel. The skittering drum-and-guitar opening of "Evening/Morning" bursts into a bass-driven clattering beat that places vocals on the sideline. "Always Like This" builds up to such a satisfactory anthemic melody, with Ed Nash's skipping bass line recalling Vampire Weekend, that the crowd burst into applause. The shimmering guitar interplay between Steadman and Jamie MacColl stands out; their hooks sear through "Magnet" and "Dust on the Ground". Fed through effects pedals, they take on even more of a euphoric ambient feel live than on record.

Interesting that the band have musical heritage in their blood – guitarist MacColl is the son of folk musician Neill, and Kirsty MacColl was his aunt. That Bombay Bicycle Club are preparing to turn to Appalachian folk points to an exciting future of limitless possibilities ahead.

I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose(2009)
I Had the Blues But I Shook Them Loose is the debut album by London alternative rock band, Bombay Bicycle Club.
BBCLP_000.jpg

The title comes from a line in the song "After Hours" by A Tribe Called Quest, from their 1990 album People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm.

Cool Delta here
It’s a beautifully literate and ambitious debut. From the dizzying MBV/M83 swoops and morning-after ruefulness of the LP’s opening song to the open-tuned, Appalachian folk feel of the record’s closing track, the album thrums with subtle invention and quiet emotional intensity. Fans of Bloc Party, Broken Social Scene and Bon Iver – or any mildly sensitive soul with a fondness for ricocheting guitar chords – will be utterly beguiled. Indie rock rarely gets to enjoy its innocence these days, but Bombay Bicycle Club know that’s exactly what makes it precious.

Human Touch is the ninth studio album by Bruce Springsteen released in 1992 (see 1992 in music). It was one of many of Springsteen's #1 albums in the UK. This album was co-released on the same day as Lucky Town. It was the more popular of the two, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 and single release "Human Touch" (paired with Lucky Town's "Better Days") peaked at #1 on the Album Rock Tracks chart and #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.(Wikipedia Human Touch)

57channels_alb-ht.jpg

Lebanese Tribute to Bruce Springsteen
here
Springsteen used the image of the cable channels to imply that material goods and luxury items do not buy happiness. It came out at a time when cable companies were offering a seemingly endless choice of channels. The song ends with the narrator, "in the blessed name of Elvis", shooting the TV set with a .44 Magnum. This was a reference to legends about Presley shooting up his own TVs when he wasn't happy with what was on.

In in late Apr 1992 in Los Angeles – where Bruce was living as well as rehearsing with the new band – a jury finds four L.A. police officers not guilty in the beating of black motorist Rodney King. The verdict was behind a year of racial tension in the city that erupted in violence; rioting in South Central Los Angeles results in 38 dead, more than 1,250 injuries, and $200 million of damage. The act was shown frequently on the news. Bruce tells James Henke, "It really felt like the wall was coming down... We were down in Hollywood rehearsing, and people were scared. People were really scared. And then you are just, like, sad or angry." The "No justice, no peace!" that was chanted by rioters will later be used in live and remixed versions of 57 CHANNELS (AND NOTHIN' ON), giving the song an even sharper political edge.

In the summer of '92, Human Touch and Lucky Town were falling down the charts even before the tour begins. The 57 Channels (And Nothin' On) single came out in Jun 1992 hoping that it would restore some commercial luster to the twin albums. Peaking at #68 only on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the single only did a little to stop the descent.

The song was released on several singles that year, most notably 57 Channels (And Nothin' On): The Remixes that included three strange remixes by former E Street Band member Steve Van Zandt: Little Steven Mix Version 1, Little Steven Mix Version 2, and There's A Riot Goin' On. Van Zandt incorporated into his remixes the "No justice, no peace!" repeated chant that was used in the L.A. demonstrations. These remixes gave on additional weight to the already topical song.

57 CHANNELS (AND NOTHIN' ON)
I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills
With a truckload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

Well we might'a made some friends with some billionaires
We might'a got all nice and friendly if we'd made it upstairs
All I got was a note that said "Bye-bye John
Our love's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
(Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on)

So I bought a .44 magnum, it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
'Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they busted me for disturbin' the almighty peace
Judge said "What you got in your defense son?"
"Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on"
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

I can see by your eyes friend you're just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

A respectable example for how destiny takes it’s toll - whilst most do not receive enough, this 19-year old does not know where to with all the gifts. She is gorgeous, talented, and has a name, which makes even Welsh duchesses turn green with envy. What Dominique Dillon de Byington ? who unpretentiously calls herself Dillon - has self-sufficiently shaken out of her laptop, is truly impressive. Lawless constructs between Ghettotech, Old School HipHop beats and a Piano. Lyrically oscillating between charming and explicit. Edkeane Associatres here
Price has dedicated her life to her love. She is a 2007 graduate of the New England Conservatory in Massachusetts. In fact, Massachusetts has played an ever-increasing role for the young singer. Cambridge-born, multi-Grammy nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon invited the young singer to sing for the audience at a clinic at the Montreux Jazz Festival where her manager, Ed Keane, heard Price. From that moment, the college-bound singer has traveled the world experiencing notable ‘firsts’ with her trio of four years: Erik Privert on bass, Warren Wolf on piano, and Dave Brophy on drums.

So why is this 22-year-old from Nashville, Tennessee singing jazz? It’s a good question, but one that Rachael Price finds easy to answer. “I appreciate all kinds of music, but jazz hit an inner chord with me at the age of five. I heard Ella Fitzgerald’s rendition of The Lady is a Tramp. I didn’t understand the lyrics, but I liked the feeling it gave me.”

Rachael’s quick grasp of the subtleties of jazz has led to the recording of an independent debut CD entitled: Dedicated To You, a compendium of jazz standards the then-16 year old chose herself. Pop the disc into tray and you’re transported to a bygone era when “girl jazz singers” such as Doris Day or Anita O’Day dominated the airwaves. Two years later she recorded The Nashville Sessions, a set of songs associated with the jazz genre yet backed by some of the hottest country musicians. And recently she recorded The Good Hours with her touring band, adding arranger to her growing list of credits. Just listen to “That Old Black Magic” or the Judy Garland staple “The Trolley Song” and you’ll hear that Price has more to offer than most young singers anywhere. She makes each song her own.

Her voice is rich and accomplished and it goes without saying, Rachael has more to give. And, this is not surprising because all of the Prices (they moved to the U.S. from Sydney, Australia when Rachael was three) are talented. Elizabeth Price, Rachael’s mom, works for the Grand Ole Opry; sisters Juliette and Emily are singer/actresses in musical theater and older brother, Joel, studied music engineering. Bad Habits, the opening song from Dedicated To You, was composed by dad, Tom Price.

“Jazz is sincere. It is real. You can convey―tell a story with your voice.” And, Rachael Price is already telling her story.

“The Destruction of the Art Deco House” begins the record with subtle synth that sounds like an orchestra tuning up to feedback. Acoustic bass and light drums swing in, evoking a strange lounge vibe, like a folksy, feminine Tom Waits. With an alternately challenging (and yeah, beautiful) voice, Deinel’s vocal style is slinky, going where it pleases, warbling often, not breaching the perimeters of Joanna Newsom, but close to the vowel-laden sound of Björk with the variable amplitude of Billie Holiday. In addition, “Napoleon at Waterloo” hears her taking a stab at the French chanteuse form. If there is a problem with her voice, it’s that the vowel-heavy sound too often obscures the lyrics, which is a shame. There is some solid poetry on this work.

The upbeat island bass and electric key clamoring of “Dreaming of Plum Trees” is subverted by reportage on the outcome of a passionate affair with the refrain, “Oh but I saw their girl Ruthie / She was running through the street in her bare feet / Someone ought to be ashamed of her.” “Lindberghs + Metal Birds” is a threatening testament of the scourge of warfare: “You’re no better than those altruists and eagle scouts / You belong with the convalescents who couldn’t make it out on the front line.”

Lyrics rife with enjambment and internal rhymes (or no rhymes at all) pose a challenge for delivery. Yet Dienel handily sends them on their way without resulting in the sort of awkward moments that such convention-be-damned poetry can result in. If you know when to pause, and Dienel does―leaving plenty of breathing room―inherent rhythms expose themselves.

Patient lyrical delivery makes for nine well-developed songs that mostly clock in near―or above―the five-minute mark. But the arrangements are such that just as musical fatigue looms, new elements are introduced. “Napoleon at Waterloo” is driven by accordion, piano, and punchy fingered bass; this works for a while, but as it loses steam midway through the song, a samba-like march steps in to pull the song the rest of the way. Acoustic guitar closer “Vessels” is similarly buoyed by a muted trumpet.

Other sonic high points are the quick brush work and organ sounds on “Lindberghs + Metal Birds”, and the Willy Wonka ambience and creepy carnival waltz of “A Beast Washed Ashore.” Great tonal developments and chord work appears on “Hung on a Thin Thread”, which benefits from brass accentuations; and “The Destruction of the Art Deco House.” In contrast to its keen chord progressions, as that “Art Deco House” is destroyed, accordion, synths, and violins all help to tear it down as the cornerstone rhythms of bass and drums are razed, the piano also destroys itself, briefly caving into dissonance and becoming a strictly percussive instrument.

As it is Dienel’s native instrument, the piano―as well as Rhodes and synths―is well employed here rhythmically and even destructively, as noted, as well as playfully in the imperfect afternoon noodling on “Hometown Hooray.” A further note on the piano: Dienel had the assistance of Portland folk-pop producer Adam Selzer of Type Foundry Studios and bands Norfolk & Western and M. Ward; those facilities were also used for Weinland’s La Lamentor, which I recently reported contains some great upright piano sounds. Now, I may be mistaken, but it seems―audibly and logically―as though that’s the very same 1892 Decker Bros. upright on this record. That’s a real treat for listeners who enjoy keys with a little de-tuned ragtime tampering.

Kurt Vile is a guitarist and singer from Philadelphia . He presently is the lead guitarist in the band The War on Drugs and also has a burgeoning solo career. He was signed on Matador Records in May 2009 as a solo artist.
His music has been likened to Bruce Springsteen, Bob Seger, and Tom Petty. His first album for Matador Records, titled Childish Prodigy was leaked onto the internet on September 11, 2009. He plays both solo shows as well as shows with a backing band called The Violators.(Wikipedia Kurt Vile)

Matador Records here
This absorbing, addictive and richly detailed album covers an immense amount of ground compared to its predecessor, from the pounding stomp of “Hunchback” and the hypnotic beat of “Freak Train” to the unexpected, soaring trumpet in “Amplifier.”

We tend to start new signings entries to the Matablog with lines like “Matador Records is pleased to announce….”, but could we possibly be more redundant? Of COURSE we’re pleased to announce blah fucking blah, are we gonna say ”Matador Records reluctantly admits….” or “we’re obliged to tell you…”?

So with that in mind, we’re REALLY pleased to announce ― perhaps more than ever before in label history ― an addition to the label roster we currently consider to be one of the more important figures in American music circa 2009. Philadelphia guitarist/vocalist Kurt Vile first came to our attention (and possibly yours as well) with the release of the 2008 CD ‘Constant Hitmaker’ on the Gulcher imprint ( a label whose paw prints extend to dusty genius recordings by the Gizmos and MX80-Sound and contemporary stuff from Home Blitz and Magik Markers). What the homemade ‘Hitmaker’ (recently reissued on vinyl by Woodsist) lacked in fidelity it more than made for in scope ―– to dub the album “psych pop” barely scratches the surface of a work that’s as impossibly catchy as it is wildly experimental.

Einstein Music Journal here
Kurt Vile has an apt name, his rich tapestry of work punctuated by spitting angst spoken word poetry amidst rolling waves of thunderous drums and great grungy/shoegazey guitar strums has a menacing, almost uncouth tone. But his hazy seasonal drones feed feeling and good intent into his work, and it’s quietly captivating. His second record Childish Prodigy finds him branching out on expansive, experimental notes, weaving both dulcet and antagonising tones into his rough and ragged lo-fi folk rock. Encompassing occasional elements of Dylan’s delivery and subtlety and Reatard’s excitability and expressionism with the psyched reverie of an underground bedroom-producer, Vile’s stylistic scope is definitely interesting. The swimming reverb emulates the voices of a psychotic cult choir as they hack their catchphrases into trees; the bark splintering away like the eerie accompaniment that is Vile’s otherworldly noise. At once soothing and discomforting, familiar and inhuman, classic and ahead of its time, Childish Prodigy is undeniably inventive but can drag if you concentrate on it; it’s definitely more of a background burner.

Biography official website here
For close to a decade, Swedish duo Rickard Berglöf and Robert Elster (better known to the world as Vibrasphere) have been pumping out tracks from their Cloud 99 Studios. With over a 100 released productions to their name and gigs in all parts of the globe, they are without a doubt one of the most sought-after and respected trance acts in the world today. Early releases “Echo” (2001) on Spiral Trax and “Lime Structure” (2003) on Digital Structures established them as truly leading figures of the progressive trance scene, earning them a place in the history of this progressive sound. Their 3rd Album, “Archipelago” (also on Digital Structures) was regarded as one of the seminal releases of 2006 and after their short break in 2005, firmly signally Vibrasphere were back on the scene. In late 2006, the single “Floating Free” was picked up by Superstar DJs Markus Shulz and Armin Van Buuren for their radio shows, resulting in a string of licenses including Gatecrasher Live on Ministry of Sound and Armada Trance Vol. 1. With strong support from DJs Paul Van Dyk, Hernan Cattaneo, Paul Oakenfold, Christopher Lawrence, Remy, Menno de Jong, Kenneth Thomas and John 00 Fleming has helped with making a successful transition to a wider audience and a whole new generation of Vibrasphere fans. Riding on the back of their successful 2006 release Archipelago (and its subsequent remix cd), Vibrasphere released their 4th full length album, “Exploring the Tributaries” this time on Tribal Vision Records in June 2007. In the spring of 2008 Vibrasphere released a track called Autumn lights on John “00” Fleming´s label Joof. For the end of 2008 Rickard and Robert are planning an special album release due to the fact that the Vibrasphere project turn 10 years.

Luke Temple(Wikipedia Luke Temple)
Luke Temple is an American pop-folk singer-songwriter, born in Salem, Massachusetts. He is an alumnus of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. While living in New York, making a living by painting murals in wealthy New Yorkers' apartments, he released a four song self-titled EP, recorded entirely on a four-track recorder. With this, he was signed to Mill Pond Records in Seattle, Washington.
His first CD, Hold A Match to a Gasoline World, released late in 2005, took "Make Right With You" and "In the End" from his EP, and expanded it to an 11 song album.
His song "Make Right With You" was featured in an episode of Grey's Anatomy, season 3's "Where the Boys Are".
His second album, Snowbeast, was released on August 21.
Temple gained attention from various media outlets when he released a self-titled album under the name Here We Go Magic on Western Vinyl in February 2009.
As of Sept. 29, Temple and Here We Go Magic have signed to Secretly Canadian and are planning a sophomore album in spring 2010.

Here We Go Magic released their self-titled debut this past February through Western Vinyl Records. This band project, the latest from Luke Temple, is currently on tour supporting Grizzly Bear, arguably the hottest indie band around these days. So, levels of exposure continue to rise for Temple and his cohorts. On his own, Luke Temple garnered praise but remained in a world of low priority-given folk music. He had respect but lacked heat, you might say. This new full band sound - pulsing, looping, reverb-laden, hypnotic avant-pop/psychedelia - has brought him to the forefront of the indie music/blog world rather quickly. The songs are timely and seem to easily fit in with contemporaries like No Age and Deerhunter, but there is a greater softness - more beauty and more emotion.

HWGM was one of the hotter acts at this year's SXSW and have received solid critical praise from most major indie music-focused media outlets. When they stopped by The Pop Machine studio to record with Laundromatinee.com, they shared two cuts from the new album as well as an unreleased son
