Jona Bechtolt(Wikipedia Jona Bechtolt)
Jonathan Warren Bechtolt (born December 2, 1980), aka Jona Bechtolt, is an electronic musician and multimedia artist based in Portland, Oregon, United States. He is a former member of The Blow, and has released solo records under the name YACHT since 2003. Nearly all of his recordings have been distributed by both Marriage Records and States Rights Records.

YACHT
In January 2006, YACHT was commissioned for two performances for the New York based art and technology platform Rhizome, as part of their "Crap-tops vs Laptops" show. In February 2006, he performed at the Museum of Modern Art's P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center and produced an hour-long internet radio program with Clear Cut Press; a Northwest-based publisher of new literary work.
In 2007, YACHT released I Believe in You, Your Magic Is Real on Marriage Records. For the release party, Bechtolt performed a concert on an actual yacht on the Willamette River in Portland.
His live performances include dancing to the music that he has created as well as elaborate PowerPoint presentations. He documents his professional and sometimes personal life via video, text, and images on his blog.
In 2008, YACHT expanded to a duo with the induction of Claire L. Evans as a full member, contributing vocals to many of the songs on the 2009 album See Mystery Lights.

See Mystery Lights

Pitchfork:album review here
See Mystery Lights
The songs on See Mystery Lights-- from the bouncy, burbling you-can't-take-it-with-you screed "The Afterlife" (which plays like a less spastic companion piece to the Mae Shi's "Run to Your Grave") to the roller rink-ready vocoder vocals of "I'm In Love With a Ripper"-- represent YACHT at their most poppy. It's a collection of stone jams that finds the band finally as hellbent on experimenting and expanding the boundaries of its sonic scope as it is on having fun. Built on electronic foundations-- laser effects, skittering computerized beats, and spacey synth lines (or guitar riffs that have been tuned or distorted to sound like synths)-- these new songs are giddy with creative freedom while remaining tethered in service of their melodies. The vocal melodies are bright and buoyant, but delivered (by either band member, or in unison) in a chanted, oftentimes detached monotone that plays up the repetitive lyrics' mantra-like feel and adds a welcome undercurrent of slacker cool to their otherwise sugary optimism.

See Mystery Lights also marks the first time that YACHT are recording for DFA. Normally a label-change wouldn't be notable, as it is usually less an indicator of artistic choices than it is of financial or business ones, but moving to a label with such a distinctive aesthetic may be enough for many to reconsider their work. YACHT themselves created the track "Summer Song" as an homage to LCD Soundsystem, and LCD/DFA leader James Murphy liked it enough to release it on his label. It's no wonder that Murphy was smitten; the track, which also appears on the full-length, echoes the deadpan vocal delivery and burbling 80s krautrock synths of his own band, as well as cowbell-and-handclap percussion ripped from the Rapture's "House of Jealous Lovers", one of DFA's biggest singles. Even other tracks on the collection-- ones that weren't written specifically in homage to Murphy-- can't help but sound influenced by him. Case in point: "We Have All We've Ever Wanted", with its minimalist dance beat, heavy bass, and Bechtolt's dry, talky delivery, recalls "Losing My Edge", albeit with a lighthearted, anthemic chorus.

Still, while YACHT clearly share influences with Murphy's gang (Eno, Ferry, Neu!, ESG, etc.), their positive, futuristic jams actually sound most closely related to Tom Tom Club. Perhaps that's because, like Tom Tom Club's first self-titled album, which was recorded in Barbados, See Mystery Lights was recorded in a sunny, faraway locale-- in this case, far from the band's native rainy Portland, Oregon, in Marfa, Texas. The vibe of the album is relaxed and sun-soaked-- especially "Psychic City (Voodoo City)", which features an elastic groove built on a dubby, reggae-ish keyboard melody inspired by the bassline of Althea and Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking".

Regardless of influence or intent, however, See Mystery Lights is a triumph. It's a feel-good album for an era that could use a little happiness, a sweaty collection of heady, hedonistic tunes just in time for the hottest days of the year. And the best part is that one spin of this wily, sunny disc will be able to transport you back to summer vacation any day of the year.

Olivia's debut album 'Synchronicity' was released on December 6th 2000. The album features all 6 singles and a total of 14 tracks. Although many of the songs have a rock edge, the album proves that Olivia is more than just a rock singer; she says she does not like the idea of being fit into a particular category, such as pop, rock, etc., and says her music is what she feels at the time.

When asked about what direction her music is taking, Olivia responded, 'I don't decide on any directions beforehand, my music comes from my moods. If I'm really excited, I'll probably make a fast song etc.'. So, what can we expect from Olivia in the future? Olivia says, 'I have many many goals. It's all a surprise!!!'

Pitchfork new best albums here
Girls have been the subject of a steadily building buzz based on some excellent singles, and they deliver on that promise here in a big way. Musically, Album is mostly sunny Beach Boys pastiche, but it's not the kajillionth indie attempt at orchestral Pet Sounds majesty. Rather, it's simple and forthright early Beach Boys stuff: compact guitar-jangles, sha-la-la harmonies, muffled heartbeat drums. The canniness of Album's production choices and the scuzzy depression of the lyrics and the gut-level songwriting instincts, along with everything else about the record, add up to something elusive and fascinating-- maybe even heartbreaking.

prefixmag.com here
Abstract
Album is the debut full-length from Christopher Owens and Chet "JR" White, the Californian duo that makes up Girls. Featuring the tracks "Hellhole Ratrace" and "Morning Light," both of which made the rounds on the blogosphere leading up to the album's release, Album has been described as "the perfect San Francisco summer record."

Review
Album was allegedly created when San Francisco’s Girls were on drugs, but it sounds like the only substances altering these dudes’ consciousnesses were sunshine and rock ‘n’ roll. It’s also a bit hard to put much weight in the drug angle, since these dudes are from San Francisco, a place with weather so nice people in heaven are jealous. It’s not like Girls cut an album on meth in North Dakota because there wasn’t shit else to do.

Girls were formed by Christopher Owens, who happens to be a guy with a hell of a backstory. He was once a member of the Children of God cult (the one that allegedly encouraged sexual relationships between the adults and children in the cult) before running away at 16 to live on the streets. After a few years bustling around, he started Girls with producer Chet White.

Pegging Girls as a drug-fueled, California band with a singer with a bloggable life story is probably missing the point, though. Girls are, at their most basic, a solid band of rock ‘n’ roll reappropriators. They pull from Buddy Holly-esque country rock (“Darling”), British new-wave (at least in spirit, “Headache”), AM pop (“Laura”), bristling lo-fi noise punk (“Big Bad Mean Motherfucker” and “Morning Light”), effervescent pop-rock (“Lust for Life”) and girl-group ballads (“Ghostmouth,” perhaps the only song to directly speak on Owens’ cult background, but probably not). The only things that carry the album throughout the changes are the overwhelming optimistic, yet heartbroken vibe and Girls’ omnivorous attitude toward rock history.

Yet throughout most of the album, Girls do little to differentiate themselves from a bevy of similar bands whose only weakness is a lyricist that is less entertaining than Owens (which, I suppose, gets down to the difference between bar bands and famous bands). It’s on “Hellhole Ratrace” that Girls make their pitch for semi-stardom; it is by leagues their best track, and one that hardly feels at place smack dab in the middle of Album. The track starts slow, but is brought to a simmer by ever-escalating guitar, and Owens’ increasingly fragile worries about not wanting to die to soon, before everything explodes in walls of blissed-out feedback. It’s a pristine highlight, towering over everything around it.

If nothing else, Album could be a precursor to about five different albums. On album two will Girls do all punk, all lo-fi, all sunny AM affectations or all seven-minute long feedback meditations? Listening to Album, you’ll never know.

Micachu.jpg

Mica Levi, known by her stage name Micachu (Born 1987 in Surrey, United Kingdom), is an English singer, songwriter, composer, and producer. She is classically trained and is best known for experimental music in a variety of genres.(Wikipedia Micachu)

Micachu and the Shapes
Levi formed a band called The Shapes, which includes Raisa Khan on keyboards and Marc Pell on drums. They signed to Accidental Records who released their debut single "Lone Ranger" in May 2008, followed by "Golden Phone" in August 2008.

Their debut album, Jewellery, produced by influential electronic musician Matthew Herbert, was recorded around Mica's composition studies at Guildhall School. Advance copies of the record reached the press in early 2009, and generated positive feedback. Björk was even spotted dancing at an early gig, and approached Mica after the show.
In the wake of this growing buzz, Micachu and the Shapes were signed to Rough Trade, who released Jewellery on March 9 2009. Drowned In Sound consequently hailed the record as "thrillingly improbable pop made by a grade-A maverick."
The album was strongly-tipped to be nominated for 2009's Mercury Prize
Its omission from the shortlist sparked widespread criticism, perhaps best summed up by the Guardian: "but what about...Micachu and the Shapes, and all the others we were convinced would make the grade?"
Micachu and the Shapes toured widely throughout the UK in 2008, including performances at Bestival and V Festival. The band played abroad in South Africa and in the US at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City and SXSW in Austin, Texas. They also performed on the Main Stage of the Siren Music Festival at Coney Island in Brooklyn in July 2009. Touring is set to continue throughout Europe and North America in the summer and fall of 2009.

Micachu & The Shapes video premiered...
Here is a first for bjork.com: A video premiere by another artist! Micachu & the Shapes have a new song Turn Me Well which is released 15th of September on RoughTradeRecords

For us MWC of bjork.com, who have actually a bit of an attention span, remember Björk talking about Micachu on NPR not so long ago when she said:
"I saw her in London, in June, a year ago and I was really excited about her. I thought it was that sort of 'do it yourself' approach, with all these little guitars and her attitude was really fresh… think it's really, really fun. (She)is a bit of a prankster really, isn't she?"
So when asked if this would be a possibility for Micachu it as a straight yes from Björk.

And now Micachu is playing the Icelandairwaves festival in Reykjavík in October, and the video being premiered on bjork.com? is there a connection? We like to think so!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you: Turn Me Well by Micachu and The Shapes.

Angela Desveaux & The Mighty Ship
From its opening cascade of chords to its last flickering notes, Angela Desveaux’s new record is an arresting, emotive affair. The Montreal native has followed the critical success of 2006’s Wandering Eyes with a bold display of timeless, country-tinged rock ’n’ roll. Clearly revelling in the chance to make an album with a full band, Desveaux doesn’t let the inevitable sonic uproar submerge her presence as a singer and coyly direct lyricist. Instead, she and her band suss out the hooks in wonderful pop fare like “Hide from You” and “The Way You Stay,” whose sunny demeanour blinds listeners from the whole album’s underlying angst. Relationships can be the stuff of tawdry art but Desveaux is a skilled expressionist, crafting heavy tunes with poise.

Angela Desveaux & The Mighty Ship (2008)

Pitchfork:Album Review here
Title tracks are often emblematic of the albums they adorn, but Angela Desveaux's "Mighty Ship" feels like a red herring on the album that shares its name. Montreal-based Desveaux is being sold as a singer steeped in traditional country music influences, yet "Mighty Ship" is the only song on the record that deeply reflects an antiquarian sensibility, either musically or lyrically, evoking church hymns and agrarian hardships in its portrayal of a young woman who has lost her husband at sea.

Initially, this title track's singularity seems like a disappointment. So much of what claims a kinship with country in indie spheres only utilizes the genre for cosmetic purposes, ornamenting things with a little pedal steel rather than really digging into something timeless and substantial, as "Mighty Ship" manages with its mournful horns and sad Christian reverence. The remainder of The Mighty Ship may lack such distinctive roots, but in its place Desveaux offers something more satisfying, if less regional. Namely, much of the rest of her album is marked by punchy pop-rock and plenty of sharp hooks, retaining just enough twang for Desveaux to emerge as a worthy inheritor to Lucinda Williams and Rosanne Cash, two women savvy enough to explore ruralist attitudes without neglecting the distinct physical pleasures of well-crafted modern pop. Patently conjuring revered, bygone c&w can quite honestly be a crutch, and there's nothing artificially propping up the tight, sprightly sprint of "Sure Enough", the spacious riffing of "Hide From You" or the moody, 1980s AOR thrum of "Shape You". The sadder, slower likes of "Other Side" and "Joining Another" may register more closely to country by the sheer fact of their solemnity, but there's no dirt underneath their nails and that's fine, since neither song is exactly boasting a sharecropper's lineage anyway.

While "Mighty Ship" is an aberration musically, the title track nonetheless carries lyrical concerns that resonate throughout the record. Desveaux spends the bulk of these songs examining the sobering realities of romance and the strain relationships exert on the feminine psyche. It's not an album rife with specifics, and sometimes the vagueness can be slightly maddening, like Desveaux's confession in "Other Side" that "It's taking all my energy when you ask me to do something wrong," or the pseudo-portentous repetition of "There's a full moon on the rise" in "Worried Mind." For the most part, however, her words cut to the quick, and not just the hot-button invocations of diets and shame on "For Design", but also the stark-simple sentiments driving "The Way You Stay", where Desveaux pleads "What do you want me to do for you/ What do you need me for," or the whole of "Joining Another", which finds her mourning the partial loss of self that's an inevitable component of any love affair.

Perceived loss of self is a risk Desveaux herself takes in making music so largely bereft of easy cultural or regional signifiers, yet the keenness of her songcraft makes these hard-won, universal sentiments far more rewarding than most lazy splashes of local color.

We work, we worship the Earth, we make sand paintings that blow away, we hallucinate and vision. We formed in numerous tents sprinkled in the forest, not out of spite. Motion to Rejoin

Pitchfork:Album review here
It's tempting to consider the title of Brightblack Morning Light's third album, Motion to Rejoin, a plea to return to a society they've left behind. The notoriously itinerant duo called Alabama and California home, but since their eponymous sophomore album for Matador put them on the map in 2006, they've moved off the grid to a New Mexico hut powered by a few solar panels. One listen to the ritually narcotic Motion to Rejoin, however, signals that all manner of shaman/hippie/Bohemian trappings are still very much the order of the day.

Though it's easy to think of Brightblack as texturally homogeneous purveyors of mood music, revisiting Brightblack Morning Light reminds that Naybob Shineywater and Rachael Hughes have a defter sonic touch than they're often given credit for: songs experience movements, buoyed by the odd piano or horn section, and contain actual riffs. On Motion to Rejoin, Brightblack's compositional subtlety manifests itself in overt nods to American musics: shades of gospel, soul, and even funk are all marinated in Brightblack's low, flat tones. Hughes' thumbing Rhodes lines and Shineywater's cattail guitar remain the dominant elements of every song, but Motion to Rejoin is more tremulous than its predecessor, the same way a high-zoom photo might be blurred with a slight shake of the camera.

mapsadaisical here
One day in 2003, I was driving around one of the less welcoming parts of south east London (I don’t know what I was doing in south east London, I have no business in south east London), radio tuned to the mighty Resonance FM (of course), when I heard a record so incredible that I damn nearly crashed the car. It was just too perfect, with its nagging two-note guitar riff, krautrock pulse, Japanese yelping, and hyperactive percussion. I pulled over into a supermarket car park to sit out the remainder. People drifted past with laden trollies, in fact entire weather systems (a grey one, a rainy one, another grey one) drifted over so long was the track; all the while I sat there, nodding gleefully. I had no idea it was possible to have so much fun in south east London.

That piece of music was “Sizuku Ring Neng” from OOIOO’s sublime Kila Kila Kila album, which remains a huge favourite of mine, as does 2006 release Taiga. Hence a new release from them is much anticipated round these parts. Given that OOIOO are the other band of Boredoms drummer Yoshimi P-We, and given the heroic levels of recording inactivity associated with that band in recent years, I’m astounded that three years still elapse between OOIOO albums, but here it is: Armonico Hewa, which translates roughly as “air in a harmonious state”. I’m guessing it doesn’t refer to the noxious delights of the A102(M) through south east London. It begins with whine, clatter and a scream, like countryfolk Nissenenmondai being pushed down the stairs. Oh what a terrible image. Don’t attempt to recreate that one at home. Poor, lovely Nissenenmondai. From the swirling synths of “Konjo” and “Ulda”, to the typically nonsensical and self-referential chants (”O O I A H” this time round) and the genius percussive nursery rhyme that is album closer “Honki Ponki”, thse thirteen tracks of dayglo space-rock are dangerously moreish. The eight minutes of “Polacca” take in everything they do best: squelchy fuzz guitar riffs, catchy call and response chants, and those tribal drum patterns.

Armonico Hewa is probably the most consistent and – relatively – commercial album of their career, and is released by Thrill Jockey in October. I’ve been thinking about this for ages, but after this and the Nissenenmondai album, the time seems right: who fancies joining me in a Japanese all-female band?

Fever Ray is the solo project of Karin Dreijer Andersson, who is one half of the Swedish electro act The Knife (the other half is her brother Olof Dreijer). Andersson was also the lead singer and guitarist for the defunct indie pop group Honey is Cool. The first, self-titled Fever Ray record was released digitally on January 13, 2009 and its first single “If I Had A Heart” was released on December 15, 2008.

What would you do if one decade into your career you suddenly saw one of your songs turned into a worldwide hit, won six Grammis in your native Sweden and your latest release was declared album of the year by one of the world’s most influential music websites? If you’re Karin Dreijer Andersson, formerly singer with ‘90s pop hopes Honey is Cool and now one half of The Knife, the answer is to take a couple of years off and return as a solo artist under a new name: Fever Ray.

In Karin’s own words, “I had so many songs to record that I just had to make an album. I thought I was going to have a longer break but I guess it will never happen. I can’t stop working. My aim was to finish the album and now that it’s done I’m a bit restless (good that The Knife has an opera to write then.) During the last years I discovered that I like to sing too, so I hope that my newly found live band will make it to the stages next year. We are rehearsing and building something beautiful and brilliant.”

800beloved is a Michigan-based group formed from the writing & production of singer/songwriter, Sean Lynch.
The group's moniker, taken from a 1-800 telephone number, hints at the merger between two opposing themes - "800" representing the interest in popular culture's flimsiness while "beloved" alludes to the lyrical use of sacred, often dismal and ironically naive subject matter.

Host to numerous contributors since the project's begining in September 2005, the current incarnation of the group, Anastasiya Metesheva & Sean Lynch, performs selectively throughout the Midwest. After three years of production, their debut LP, entitled BOUQUET, was launched in compact disc format on Valentine's Day 2009 - the 44th release under the Moodgadget recording label. From it's opening line, "Let's kill everyone we know and hit the open road..." the eleven song album maintains a barrage of decadent one-liners amidst a whirlwind of glittery guitars and synthesizers. A sound that has claimed the affections of both teenage audiences and Post-punk/Shoegaze devotees, 800 has also earned praise for the provocative formats in which they have leaked songs from their debut - formats that have included, pill-shaped USB drives concealed within bags of candy and Cassingles.
800beloved currently rehearses in Milford, Michigan where Lynch also works as a cosmetologist & assistant for a funeral home. (Virb.com 800belobed here)

The xx are a London quartet, featuring the dual lead vocals of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim (who also play lead guitar and bass guitar respectively), Baria Qureshi (keyboards and guitar) and Jamie Smith (beats, MPC sampler).
Bonding over a shared love of dark, emotive 80s guitar sounds and the high-end sheen of American R&B, The xx’s unique sound befits a band whose wide range of influences combine via beautiful, hushed vocal duets and a brilliantly inventive use of samples and low-end frequencies to produce stark, sweet melancholic pop.
Their self-titled debut has been critically well-received.(last.fm The xx Biography)

Pitchfork:Album review The xx(2009) here
The xx are four 20-year-olds from South London who make predominantly slow, furtive pop music, mostly about sex. They are also one of the stranger recipients of UK hype in recent memory. They have no calling-card song; members of the Pitchfork staff have ID'd no fewer than four songs ("Basic Space", "Crystalised", "Islands", "Infinity") as "the one." They are not fashion plates, nor likely to be. Their list of influences is potent but imperfect: Young Marble Giants (too shaggy and heavy-lidded); Japan (too robust and theatric); Glass Candy (too quick and glammy). Without one gimmick song they'll never be able to reproduce, without an alternate agenda, without a set-in-stone hip influence, the xx start to sound like a real actual band, even if, after dozens of listens, it's nearly incomprehensible to think that a group so fresh-faced produced xx
xx.jpg

Strongly influenced by modern R&B-- the group made hay with an early cover of Womack & Womack's "Teardrops", while UK copies of xx come packed with their version of Aaliyah's "Hot Like Fire"-- the xx use a drum machine to complement their copiously tidy compositions. Unlike contemporary R&B fetishists Hot Chip or Discovery, who have clearly spent long hours internalizing Timbaland, the Neptunes, and other radio cognoscenti, the xx incorporate more abstract elements of the genre: a liberal use of bass tones and an unwavering focus on sex and interpersonal relationships.

Singer-guitarist Romy Madley Croft in particular seems all but incapable of uttering a line that isn't a come-on, a post-coital musing, or a longing apology for a lack of one of the former. During "Islands" or "Basic Space", her voice takes on a pleasant soft-pop vibe, like Stevie Nicks'. When Madley Croft sings, during "Shelter", "Maybe I had said/ Something that was wrong/ Can I make it better/ With the lights turned on," it's unclear whether lights-turned-on activity is sex or... something besides sex. She's not some purring kitten, though, merely reflective about a subject we don't often associate with teenagers and self-awareness.

Raised in Detroit and now living in San Francisco, Sarah June (Sarah Weathers) is an acclaimed singer-songwriter whose new album is a lovely, intimate, poetic meditation. Her new album “This Is My Letter To The World” was released on Hand/Eye records in August 2008.

albumsarahjune.jpg
Sarah June's debut album "This Is My Letter To The World"

Sarah June is a singer-songwriter from Detroit, Michigan.
She has been singing and playing piano and guitar since childhood.
In high school she began writing songs inspired by the haunting imagery of the industrial wasteland she was surrounded by.
When she was 18 she began to perform in Chicago and Detroit, and put together an EP called "three-quarter view" in 2001. Currently she lives in San Francisco. Still inspired by bleak urban landscapes, and the loneliness that lurks within us all, she spent this past year writing songs that she compiled into her debut album: "This Is My Letter To The World".
She recorded and edited all of the songs alone in her apartment, being careful to preserve the sincere and delicate sound-quality of the original recordings.
Many of the songs' lyrics pay subtle homage to some of Sarah's most beloved literary figures such as Emily Dickinson, Sylvia Plath, Ray Bradbury, and Gwendolyn Brooks. "This Is My Letter To The World" is a visual experience as much as it is aural, with imagery-rich lyrics woven into atmospheric and fragile melodies.

Though singer-songwriter seems too common a term to apply to Sarah June, however accurate it may be. Singer-songwriter she is, but the songs she writes and sings are both more beautiful and more haunting than the average fare. There is an uncommon ghostly air to her album. Like the smell of flowers in a empty and abandoned house where sunlight comes shining through dusty window panes. Perfectly sparse and lonesome, these songs come from the edges of dreamland. 10 original compositions accompanied by 2 well-chosen covers (Prince’s “When Doves Cry” and a stunning version of Elvis’ “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You .”)

Rainwatcher (DEBUT ALBUM 2008)

Blogarhythms here
Downtempo/Soul outfit Trinah, quite perfectly titled Rainwatcher ? is a song called “Sugary Pleasure,” where vocalist Kathrina März coos in a sexily cracked whisper about how sweet her significant others’ love is, likening it to confectionery delights over a gooey electroacoustic track comprised of Ummah-esque drum-programming, luscious keys, glistening chimes, guitar plucks & strums both jazzy and folky and fat synthesized bass that melts into bleeps and blorps like a hunk of chocolate warming in the sun. Getting romantic with sugary sweets in the park? That sounds like a picnic to me!

Eisley is an indie-pop rock band from Tyler, Texas. Eisley consists of four siblings: Sherri DuPree, Stacy DuPree, Chauntelle DuPree and Weston DuPree ? and their cousin, Garron DuPree.

The band began as an after-church endeavor when the DuPrees were young. The band was named Moss Eisley, after the Star Wars city Mos Eisley, but for legal reasons the “Mos” was dropped officially when they announced their tour opening for Coldplay. Now they’re all grown up and have both headlined and opened for bands such as (but not limited to): Taking Back Sunday, Coldplay, Switchfoot, Snow Patrol, Brand New, Vedera, Mute Math, The Myriad, Hot Hot Heat and New Found Glory. Featuring ethereal, soaring harmonies and dreamy imagery, Eisley has a sound all their own. They are, however, not without comparison or influence. Their sound echoes to dream pop and artists such as Cocteau Twins or Mazzy Star and to contemporary acts such as Denali or Radiohead.(last.fm Eisley Biography)

Imogen+Heap+imogen.jpg

Imogen Heap (born 9 December 1977 in the London Borough of Havering) is a Grammy nominated English singer and songwriter from Romford, Havering. She is known for her work as part of Frou Frou and for her 2006 solo record Speak for Yourself, which she wrote, produced and mixed. In 2006, Heap was nominated for two Grammy Awards. She has produced three solo albums, the latest of which is 2009's Ellipse which was an immediate North American chart success.(Wikipedia Imogen Heap)

Speak for Yourself (2005) (Megaphonic Records/RCA Victor/White Rabbit)

Musical and songwriting style
For her solo work (as well as her work with Frou Frou and Acacia), Heap specialises in heavily produced and arranged singer-songwriter pop incorporating elements of rock, dance and electronica. As a guest player and collaborator she has proved flexible, working within rock (Jeff Beck), hip-hop (Urban Species) and theatre/film music.
Heap is notable for her use of manipulated electronic sounds (and is in demand as a remixer). In a 2005 interview, she commented “I just love crafting and shaping sounds. Actually, many of the sounds that I work with start off as organic instruments - guitar, piano, clarinet, etc. But I do love the rigidity of electronic drums... I would record live drums, and then I would spend a day editing them to take the life out of them. I like to breathe my own life into these sounds, and I do try to keep the ‘air’ in the music. Some people think electronic music is cold, but I think that has more to do with the people listening than the actual music itself."Heap also mixes ambient sound into her music where appropriate: “One night I decided to record my boyfriend and me eating dinner. I wanted to get the sound of the room. So, on "Hide and Seek", for example, you can actually hear the sound of a frying pan. People might think it sounds like rain, but it’s a frying pan. Certain sounds give the music a width and a space, and that’s important."

Heap states that her song lyrics come from personal experience, but are encoded rather than being straightforwardly confessional. She has commented "Most of the time, the lyrics are kind of like my secret messages to my friends or my boyfriend or my mom or my dad. I would never tell them that these songs are about them or which specific lyric is about somebody. Often, when I sit down to write a lyric, it is in the heat of the moment, and something has just happened."

froufrou.jpg

Frou Frou (pronounced /ˈfruːfruː/) was a British electronic music duo composed of Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth. They released their only album, Details, in 2002. Both of them write, produce and play instruments on the tracks, while Heap also provides the vocals. Frou Frou disbanded (amicably) in 2003 to go their separate ways musically and have denied the possibility of another Frou Frou album.(Wikipedia frou frou)

MySpace About Frou Frou What's the deal with Frou Frou in 2006?
Since the end of their promotional duties for debut album 'Details' in 2003, both members of Frou Frou (Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth) have been working on individual projects. At the moment Imogen and Guy do not have any plans to make another Frou Frou album, however neither has ruled this out and they are both very active with their current projects, read on to find out more...

Like so many others you may have discovered Frou Frou through the movie Garden State? Or maybe you found Frou Frou early-on when debut album 'Details' was released and they toured the U.S. in 2002/3? Either way, you discovered the band and loved the album? Well, here's how the story goes.....

Both members of Frou Frou (Imogen Heap and Guy Sigsworth) have been working on individual projects since 2004. Meanwhile their previous collaboration Frou Frou gained more and more acclaim. This new found success was largely due to the song 'Let Go' being included on the Grammy Award winning 'Garden State' soundtrack. Ironically, over a year after the promotional period for the band's debut album 'Details' ended, and band members began to work on individual projects, Frou Frou became more popular than ever! It was almost as if everyone got in on the secret just a little too late. The good news is that both Imogen and Guy are both working on new projects.

Imogen Heap released her brand new solo album 'Speak For Yourself' in the USA on Novermber 1st 2005 via RCA Victor. The album, (which is also out in her native UK) includes the digital hit single 'Hide & Seek' which you may have already heard on TV show 'The OC'! To find out more about 'Speak For Yourself' and Immi's upcoming tour dates, please visit www.imogenheap.com.

Guy Sigsworth, the male-axis of Frou Frou continues to write and produce songs for some of todays biggest names in music, as well as working with upcoming musicians. Check out WikiPedia for more info on Guy's work - his official website will be launched in the coming months!

Meg++Dia++Utah3.jpg

Meg & Dia is an American band formed in 2004. It was founded by sisters Meg and Dia Frampton, and is now a five-piece act with additional members Nicholas Price, Jonathan Snyder and Carlo Gimenez.
Meg & Dia (also then known as The Meg & Dia Band) released its first album, Our Home Is Gone, in 2005. At the time, the band consisted of just the two Frampton sisters, and the album's tracks were mostly acoustic songs. Meg played guitar and provided back-up vocals while Dia sang. A year later, they released their second album, Something Real, their first album released under Doghouse Records.
The band signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2007 and released here, here and here in 2009 via Sire Records.(Wikipedia Meg & Dia)

In contrast to the band's previous release Something Real, here, here and here minimally references literature.
The sole exception is the track "Hug me" (née "Hug me till you drug me"), which was inspired by "Brave New World".
The eponymous closing track references a Mozart quote and narrative in which the composer points to his heart, mind and ears (here, here and here) in order to explain how he wrote his music.(Wikipedia here, here and here)

"Rebecca"
Meg Frampton (born April 3, 1985) plays guitar and does back-up vocals for the band. She attended and was a cheerleader at Dixie High School in St. George, Utah and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. She enjoys reading 18th century British literature. She lists East of Eden, Atlas Shrugged, Forever Amber, Frannie and Zooey, The Great Gatsby, Indiana, Lolita, Nine Stories, Pride and Prejudice and works by Ernest Hemingway as some of her favorites, and gets lots of inspiration from the books she reads. She also writes most of the songs on the albums, and finds comfort in her novels.
On stage, she alternates between a Vintage White Fender American Telecaster and a Gibson ES-335 Dot in sunburst, and a white Gibson Les Paul Custom, though she has also played a black Gibson Les Paul Studio in the past. For acoustic songs, she plays a Taylor 814ce acoustic. Meg often performs wearing cap sleeve dresses. Meg provides the lead vocals and plays keyboard for the song "Rebecca". Recently Meg has provided intro solos for some of the band's songs during live performances such as Roses and Monster.(Wikipedia Meg & Dia)

Many of their songs are based on books: "Monster" was based on the Cathy Ames character in East of Eden by John Steinbeck; "Indiana" was based on Indiana by George Sand; and "Rebecca" was based on Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. "Tell Mary" was based on Mary by Vladimir Nabokov. "Hug Me" is based on Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
"Courage Robert" was influenced by and written about Robert Schumann, a famous pianist and composer.
The song "Here, here and here" references Mozart.

LA ROUX (2009)

allmusic Biography here
Meaning "red-haired one" in French, La Roux is the synth pop project of flame-haired singer/songwriter Elly Jackson and keyboardist/producer Ben Langmaid. Before they collaborated, Jackson, the daughter of actress Trudie Goodwin, grew up listening to folk artists and singer/songwriters like Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, and drew inspiration from their sounds for her early music. However, her style changed as Jackson got into the rave scene, taking her music in a more electronic direction. Meanwhile, Langmaid went to school with Faithless' Rollo Armstrong, and the pair recorded as house duo Huff & Puff in the mid-'90s; Langmaid also recorded as Atomic and as one half of Huff & Herb for Armstrong's label, and was a songwriter for the group Kubb. Jackson and Langmaid began working together in 2006, when they were introduced by a mutual acquaintance. Initially, they called their project "Automan" and wrote largely acoustic music before scrapping that name and sound for the sleek Prince, David Bowie, and the Knife-inspired style they pursued as La Roux, a moniker Jackson found in a book of baby names. Their debut single, "Quicksand," was released by Kitsune in fall 2008, and earned the band acclaim from the BBC and the Guardian. La Roux supported Lily Allen on her 2009 U.K. tour around the time their second single, "In for the Kill," was released that spring and debuted at 11 on the U.K. charts, reaching a peak position of two; that summer, the single "Bulletproof" debuted at number one a week before La Roux's self-titled album was released.

John Darnielle is one of the most imaginative lyricists of his generation. Since he sat cross-legged in the early nineties with an acoustic guitar in front of a boom box, and pressed record for the first time, skewed characters, vibrant images and perfectly-framed narratives have flowed in their hundreds. In that time, he has conjured - from laconic, blazing phrases - insights into a multitude of vivid alternative realities. He has inhabited the minds of murderers and suicides, prophets and emperors. He has documented a disintegrating, alcoholic marriage (in the 'Alpha' series), the inner lives of teenage metal fans ('The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton') and the final moments of prehistoric sacrificial victims ('Tollund Man'). He has even brought to life a world so improbably perfect that the Chicago Cubs could win a World Series ('Cubs In Five').

The Big Pink Profile 4AD Page
The+Big+Pink+161ynnb.jpg
Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell are The Big Pink, and although both of music stock, their excellent debut, A Brief History of Love, is the first album that either can really call their own.

Both from London, Milo is behind the celebrated Merok label, which has helped to launch both Klaxons and Crystal Castles as well as unleashing mutant triumphs from such underground experimentalists as Salem and Teengirl Fantasy, while Furze made a name for himself in such industrial behemoths as Panic DHH and Alec Empire. Though the pair are the central musical orchestrators, an ever-evolving line-up – currently consisting of Akiko Matsuura (Comanechi, Pre), Daniel O’Sullivan (previously of Sunn O))) and Guapo), backing singer Valentine Fillol Cordier and bassist Leopold Ross - has helped them to engineer a sound that marries an anthemic pop sensibility with fiery digital experimentalism.

Atlas Sound Profile 4AD Page
Atlas+Sound+bradford.jpg
For the uninitiated, Atlas Sound is the solo moniker of Deerhunter frontman / provocateur Bradford Cox, so named since 1994, when a sixth-grade Bradford made recordings on a karaoke cassette machine bearing the words Atlas Sound.

Though it was Cox’s earliest musical incarnation, it wasn’t until 2008 that the first Atlas Sound album emerged. Let The Blind Lead Those Who See But Cannot Feel is a complex, expansive bedroom recording originally released in North America on Kranky. 4AD subsequently released it in Europe, a version distinguished by an additional disc of bonus material.

The genesis of the record can be traced back to those sixth-grade musical experiments; a time when he discovered through reading a Beck interview that his family’s disused karaoke machine could be used as a rudimentary multi-tracking device. Furthermore, the darker childhood experience of spending an entire summer on a children’s hospital ward undergoing operations also (understandably) plays a pivotal part in colouring his music.

Tyondai Braxton is an American composer and performer, largely known as the guitarist/singer of American post-rock super-group Battles, and as a prominently featured artist on record label Warp Records. He has been actively producing and performing music under his name as a solo artist, as well as collaboratively under various group titles and collectives, since the mid 90’s.
Raised in Connecticut, Braxton is the son of multi-instrumentalist and avant-garde composer Anthony Braxton. He later studied composition at Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut with Robert Carl and Ingram Marshall. His “orchestrated loops” involve real-time overlaying of guitar, voice and found objects, designed to simulate an ensemble.
Most recently, the release of Braxton’s newest work, titled “Central Market,” has been announced by Warp Records as slated for mid-September release in the US; the album is anticipated as a new direction in Braxton’s orchestral style, while maintaining qualities of the angular compositional style he is known for.
A sequel to “Mirrored,” the first full-length album released under the band name Battles (which pairs Braxton with musicians John Stanier, Ian Williams, and Dave Konopka) , is rumored to be scheduled for 2010. Collaboratively, Braxton has also worked with Prefuse73 and Glenn Branca, and has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet and Bang on a Can, amongst others.
