Venetian Snares is the main performing alias of Canadian electronic musician Aaron Funk (born January 11, 1975).
From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Funk is known for making electronic music often in odd numbered time signatures (mostly 7/4). He is an unusually prolific artist, having released records on the History of the Future, Isolate/DySLeXiC ResPonSe, Addict, Zod, Distort, Sublight, Low-Res, Planet Mu and Hymen record labels.
Funk debuted on a record label in 1999 with the 12" vinyl EP, Greg Hates Car Culture. Prior to this, he self-released material on cassette tape as early as 1992.
(Wikipedia Venetian Snares)

Biography (Wikipedia Venetian Snares)
His style has been critically acclaimed, notably by the late British radio disc jockey John Peel.
Venetian Snares is said to have reinvented breakcore and set the stage for many other artists such as UndaCova, Xanopticon, Enduser and Datach'i.
Venetian Snares composes much of his music with trackers. Before he began to release his music commercially, he worked primarily with OctaMED on an Amiga 500.

OctaMED

At some point prior to 2000, he began using a PC and the Windows port of OctaMED, MED Soundstudio.
During 2003 and 2005 he also used Cubase in addition to MED. Venetian Snares currently uses Renoise and has uploaded a video of his track 'Vache' playing in Renoise on Youtube.

In a February 2003 interview, Funk was asked a question regarding the diverse mix of genres he draws upon in his music, a property which the interviewer labelled "eclecticism". Funk replied: "I prefer to call it Surrealism."

In April 2009, Funk was scheduled to perform with John Frusciante, guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, at the Bang Face Weekender. Under the name Speed Dealer Moms, they were to perform a "live 303 & 808 analogue" acid set.
Unfortunately due to equipment failure, this performance was cancelled. The duo have now been announced to perform at the Bang Face event, Bang Fest, in August.

Flying+Lotus+FLO_convert_20090626072424.jpg

Flying Lotus, (born Steven Ellison) is an experimental hip hop music producer, disc jockey, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006.
He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for the music in many of the segues of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, and he has also contributed remixes to fellow Plug Research artists, including Mia Doi Todd. His great-aunt is the late Alice Coltrane. He is affectionately referred to as FlyLo by fans and critics.

He signed with Warp Records in 2007, and, following his Warp debut―the six track Reset EP―released his second album, titled Los Angeles on June 10th, 2008.(Wikipedia Flying Lotus)

Warp here
Due to unavoidable production delays, the final and most intriguing installment of the L.A. EP series will now be released on 18th/19th August, but now with an extra, bonus digital track.

We unreservedly apologise for the extra wait, but to thank you all for patience, FlyLo has now added another track to the digital bundle that there wasn't space to squeeze onto the vinyl.

On L.A. EP 3 X 3, FlyLo and a few friends explore the psychedelic ambience and dream-like elegance that brought such a vital depth to the album’s soul.

Two new Flying Lotus compositions, Endless White and Spin Cycles display his deft touch and unrivalled eye for beauty. Breakage’s Testament turns Gonjasufi’s quiet desperation into a tribal battle cry. But it is perhaps the collaboration with harpist Rebecca Raff that is most striking, revisioning Auntie’s Harp into a swirling symphony of rolling arpeggios and piercing electronics.

L.A. EP 3 X 3 is released on limited 12" and download. Previous EPs have sold out pretty much immediately, so don't sleep.

02 - Comet - MatthewDavid
03 - Endless White
04 - Parisian Goldfish (Take Remix)
05 - Spin Cycles
06 - Testament (Breakage’s Bill’s Suit Mix)
07 - Auntie’s Harp (Rebekah Raff Remix)

Digital Bonus Track - Riot (Take Rmx)

Technique
Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic, and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposely slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere. Because of this, he is often likened to producers such as Madlib, Jneiro Jarel, and J Dilla despite the fact that all the mentioned musicians have distinctly unique styles.

THE GENTLEMAN LOSERS - The Gentleman Losers
Boomkat here
Released: May 2006
gggggggl.jpg

When we first heard Finland's Gentleman Losers it was as if their music had always been familiar to us, bringing to mind the instrumental wonder of Vincent Gallo's massively overlooked 'When' album, coaxing dusty guitars, brushed drums and archive documentary music into an epiphany of childhood nostalgia and blissful daydreaming. To be sure, this has been the sort of album that has charmed and beguiled anyone and everyone who's just happened to walk into the office when it's been on - straddling that fine line between twilight beauty and dusky threat. Opening with the creased prologue of 'An Empire of Coins', The Gentleman Losers sound much as you wish Boards of Canada did - taking a water-bled guitar part then incrementally coating it in a queasy blend of crackling aural lint. Recorded at night in a reputedly haunted house that comprises part of Finland's medieval district, The Gentleman Losers describe their music as "one part 60s movie soundtracks, one part wooden electronica, all recorded through a 50s Telefunken mixer we found abandoned in a basement". 'The Gentleman Losers' encapsulate a universe of quiet musical aspirations in a breezy, effortless way that's all-too rare, managing to distil their sound into a pithy diktat : "we wanted to make music from a past that hasn't happened yet...". Album of the year.

The Gentleman Losers - Dustland The Silent Ballet here
mmmmmmmmmMakeThumbnai.jpg
New album out June 20th

Helsinki’s The Gentleman Losers describe their sound as “music from a past that hasn’t happened yet.” Leaving aside the obvious time-travel conundrums (“Lost” or “Terminator,” anyone?), this is a fairly apt description, as the band has a love for distorting instrumentation via creaky cassette, warped vinyl or overused needles, layering new sounds atop the foundation with tender grace. The Losers are not as abstract as Phillip Jeck, but they play in the same sandbox: everything here is nearly accessible, but not quite; the album as a whole has the feel of a strange artifact, something that was recorded in the modern era but discovered later: thus, the aforementioned phrase.

It’s been three years since the Losers graced us with their self-titled debut, an album which was showered with accolades (“Album of the Year,” according to Boomkat) but to these ears was overrated. Sure, it was a fine debut, but beset by one nagging problem: too many tracks featured a programmed drum pattern that overwhelmed the intricacies of the compositions. The often-crunchy drumbeats marked the recording in time, when the intention had been to be timeless. Listening to the album now, one might easily remark, “this sounds like it came out a few years ago.” In other words, the “past that hadn’t happened yet” on the first album came around rather quickly, and now it is the past.

Fortunately, the Losers have addressed this problem on their latest release. This is mighty impressive considering nobody pointed it out the first time around; the easy path would have been to coast on earlier accolades and record another album similar to the first. Only one of the twelve tracks here (“Bonetown Boys”) suffers from this percussive handicap, which may be a tip of the hat to fans of the former recording; unsurprisingly, it is the album’s weakest piece. “Farandole” also contains programming, but in this case the sound is used sparingly, allowing the “Tubular Bells” motif to take center stage.

What makes the rest of the album work is a stubborn refusal to connect the strands of melody to anything resembling a hook. One can imagine two wind-worn gentlemen picking out notes on acoustic guitars while rocking on handmade chairs on a dusty porch; or a backwoods drifter wandering inside to tap out notes on a rusty keyboard, attempting to match the timbre of the wind; or a child in his sickbed playing an unmarked tape on a thrift store cassette player. The sounds seem to have been improvised, recorded and re-structured, eventually landing in whatever space was available. Certain tracks contain echoes of their brethren, which sonically unifies the project.

Dustland turns out to be the perfect title for the album, which evokes the deserted American heartland much more than it does the forests of Finland. There’s a sense of reverence here directed toward abandonment, as if to say that what is gone may indeed be forgotten, but that the detritus and dust possess their own immutable beauty. The surprisingly major keys of closing track “Pebble Beach” sprinkle the dirt like water landing in a parched throat. Perhaps this past has not yet occurred, but The Gentlemen Losers teach us that we need not fear it when it eventually arrives.

Boys (Released May 29, 2009)

Cortney Tidwell returns with her second album after the fantastic Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up. Tidwell comes from Nashville, Tennessee, so her music is based in a country tradition, but modernized with electronics and influences from loads of other genres. Listening to her makes me think of what country could be if the genre innovated and experimented like artists in other genres have. Because of the risk-taking and overall music knowledge of Cortney (and her brother/producer Todd), it's unfair to categorize Tidwell as just altcountry. Her sound easily floats from altcountry (as on "Being Crosby") to indie pop (on "So We Sing") to whatever genre you think Bjorks belongs in (as on "Son And Moon"). She gets around sonically. The amazing thing is that the quality of the music doesn't suffer from so much genre hopping. Every sound she tackles she aces. Cortney is simply one of the most audacious female singer-songwriters out there, and her country infusion into almost every sound out there (or possibly the other way around) is incredibly engaging and interesting.

Wapedia Wiki Mark Stewart 1. Career

Stewart started out in Bristol in 1978 in music with The Pop Group, a band whose songtitles (such as "For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder?"), political conviction, disrespect for copyright and willingness to collaborate laid the foundations for his later work.

The Pop Group split in 1981, with Stewart and two other members heading off to London to hook up with the emerging On-U Sound "conspiracy of outsiders" as part of the New Age Steppers. On-U became a focal point of a diverse set of networks - punks, reggae players from both the UK and Jamaica and free-jazzers. His first post-Pop Group release was as 'Mouth 2', the 1982 single "Who's Hot". Two releases followed with On-U associates under the name 'Mark Stewart & The Maffia' - the Jerusalem EP in 1983, and the 1983 album Learning to Cope with Cowardice.

Stewart has since made several albums under his own name as well as collaborating with artists such as Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame, Tricky, Massive Attack, Chicks on Speed, ADULT. and Primal Scream. In 2005, he released a collection of his best work on Soul Jazz Records entitled Kiss the Future. His latest album Edit will be released on the Crippled Dick Hot Wax! record label in spring/summer 2008.

He is currently living in Berlin, Vienna and Weymouth.

Stewart is well known in several European countries and Japan. He is currently having a documentary On/Off - Mark Stewart - from The Pop Group to the Maffia filmed by Tøni Schifer, including interviews with the likes of Nick Cave, Daniel Miller, Pop Group Members, Adrian Sherwood, Skip McDonald, Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc, Fritz Hart (23 Skidoo) and others. The premiere of 'On/Off' took place at the East End Film Festival in April 2009

Mark Stewart has been releasing straightforward 4/4 warehouse techno 12"s for the past two years, the most recent of which appeared a few months back. For those non-vinyl aficionados among you, allow me to heartily recommend this CD compilation; it's the best work that Stewart has ever done, which is really saying something. He manages to hit that very elusive target of being just "techno" enough to be danceable and awesome, yet "IDM" enough to have depth and beauty. Highly recommended!

Album: The Whitest Boy Alive, Rules (Bubbles)
Reviewed by Andy Gill

On 2007's Dreams, the stripped-down lines and studied diffidence of the music seemed the perfect match for the mix of intellectual coolness and eagle-eyed observation in Erlend Oye's lyrics.
But where that album was sculpted in the studio with no thought of live performance, the songs on Rules were recorded live in one take, with no overdubs or effects: the resulting thinness of the sound leaves the material stranded and etiolated, like sea creatures dying on the tideline. Oye, best known for his solo work and as half of Kings of Convenience, is an accomplished cartographer of the human heart, but the skeletal settings of The Whitest Boy Alive aren't the best support for his songs. "It's a rollercoaster ride, a paralysing leap," he sings in "Rollercoaster Ride"; "It's better that we live in our own worlds, than on a bridge between the two that could never hold our weight." But the performance signally fails to convey that vertiginous risk: the song all but stalls, an impression that comes to define the album. The drumming is brisk and tidy, the guitars and keyboards neat, but ultimately they've trimmed away most of the elements that might make one want to hear this stuff again.

Octahedron is the stunning new album from The Mars Volta. An album heady with the emotion and high-drama that has always been the band's trademark, their newfound simplicity and focus has delivered some of the most immediate and powerful songs in their discography. The album opens with the tender ache of "Since We've Been Wrong", Cedric's keening vocal establishing a mood that's deeply blue, powerfully melancholic, a suckerpunch that hits every bit as hard as Octahedron's unashamed rockers (the gleaming futuristic funk of "Teflon", the tense chase-music of "Cotopaxi"). Pulling back from the full-tilt experimentation of previous releases, the album invests its energies in Omar's gift for songcraft, for swooning guitar runs of high tension and emotive power ("Luciforms"' epic riffage), and for the nagging hooks and melodies that wreath the churning rhythms of "Desperate Graves".

Chris Clark is an English electronic musician currently signed to Warp Records. With the 2006 release of Throttle Furniture, he shortened his artist name to Clark.

Throttle Furniture and Body Riddle were both three years in the making, during which time Clark refined his sound considerably. His meticulous production style makes much use of manipulated live drum samples, which are used to construct complex beats. He performed with a live drummer (often Rob Lee aka Wax Stag) during his tour at the end of 2006 and throughout 2007.

Body Riddle was released with a free EP, ThrottleClarence when purchased from particular sources. This contains some of his earlier and previously unreleased tracks. Clark is also in the process of recording extended versions of his rave tracks, to be released on 20-minute mini CDs.

His album Clarence Park was named after Clarence Park, a public park in his home town of St Albans.

Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and M Ward launch Monsters Of Folk
Conor Oberst has launched a new band with Bright Eyes cohort Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket's Jim James and M Ward.

The new band are called Monsters Of Folk, and they release their self-titled debut album on September 22.

The collaboration grew out of a series of shows the quartet played in 2004, and they recorded their debut album in Malibu and Omaha earlier this year.

All four band members swap instruments and share vocals on the album which features the following tracklisting:
'Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)'
'Say Please'
'Whole Lotta Losin'
'Temazcal'
'The Right Place'
'Baby Boomer'
'Man Named Truth'
'Goodway'
'Ahead Of The Curve'
'Slow Down Jo'
'Losin Yo Head'
'Magic Marker'
'Map Of The World'
'The Sandman, The Brakeman And Me'
'His Master's Voice'

Yes, the rumours are TRUE. M.Ward, Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Jim James have all clubbed together to make an album. Their band: Monsters Of Folk, their album: Monsters Of Folk. Like Monsters of Rock y'see, but replacing one genre for another.

The awesome foursome had played together, toured together and, heck, maybe even slept together back in 2004. They then went their own separate ways, but eventually got round to recording this.

The record was recorded in Malibu, CA and Omaha, NE (both America) and, naturally was produced by Mr Mogis.

What with all these creative guys in one place, riffin', sharing ideas and such, one wonders how they've not come up with a better name. Well, never mind, let us folkies celebrate the news anyway.

(Wikipedia John Martyn)
John Martyn, OBE (11 September 1948 – 29 January 2009), born Iain David McGeachy, was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist. Over a forty-year career he released twenty studio albums and worked with artists such as Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, and Phil Collins. He has been described as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues"

Death
Martyn's death was announced on his website on 29 January 2009, John Hillarby wrote, "With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning." Martyn died in hospital in Ireland as a result of double pneumonia.

English rock band Keane included a dedication to John Martyn at their Glasgow concert. On 31 January 2009, Liverpool-based folk-singer/guitarist John Smith, who had previously supported Martyn on tour, performed "Spencer The Rover", from Martyn's Sunday's Child album, at The Bluecoat in Liverpool, announcing the song simply "For John".

Paying tribute to Martyn, BBC Radio 2's folk presenter Mike Harding said: "John Martyn was a true original, one of the giants of the folk scene. He could write and sing classics like 'May You Never' and 'Fairy Tale Lullaby' like nobody else, and he could sing traditional songs like Spencer The Rover in a way that made them seem new minted."
Harding introduced an hour-long tribute to Martyn in his Radio 2 programme on 25 February 2009.

Pitchfork Sunday, June 7 here
Singer-songwriter Jeff Hanson was found dead in his home in St. Paul, Minnesota on Friday, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune reports. He "likely died from a fall or other accident," according to the paper. He was 31 years old.

Hanson released three albums for Kill Rock Stars, 2003's Son, 2005's Jeff Hanson, and 2008's Madam Owl. He was known for his high, otherworldly voice.

Kill Rock Stars sent out the following statement on Saturday evening:

"We are deeply shocked and saddened to report that Kill Rock Stars artist Jeff Hanson passed away on June 5, 2009 in his home, a victim of a terrible accident. Jeff has been a part of the KRS family since 2003 when he became the first artist signed to the label from an unsolicited demo.

Jeff Hanson was an amazing artist, a riotously funny person, and a good friend. Everyone at Kill Rock Stars feels that we were privileged to put out his records. We will miss him tremendously. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time."

"Monster"

His little whispers.
Love Me. Love Me.
That's all I ask for.
Love Me. Love Me.
He battered his tiny fists to feel something.
Wondered what it's like to touch and feel something.
Monster.
How should I feel?
Creatures lie here.
Looking through the window...
That night he caged her.
Bruised and broke her.
He struggled closer.
Then he stole her.
Violet wrists and then her ankles.
Silent Pain.
Then he slowly saw their nightmares were his dreams.
Monster.
How should I feel?
Creatures lie here.
Looking through the windows.
I will.
Hear their voices.
I'm a glass child.
I am Hannah's regrets.
Monster.
How should I feel?
Turn the sheets down.
Murder ears with pillow lace.
There's bath tubs.
Full of glow flies.
Bathe in kerosene.
Their words tattoed in his veins, yeah.
